Tomsula: 49ers will utilize Kaepernick's 'total package'

Coach Jim Tomsula said it is too early to speculate exactly how much Colin Kaepernick's running ability will be incorporated into the 49ers' offense next season. But he certainly envisions him as a lot more than just a running quarterback.

"Colin Kaepernick, I don't think it's any secret that his legs work really well," Tomsula said Thursday at the NFL Scouting Combine. "But so does his arm. OK? And so does his brain. And so do his eyes."

Kaepernick actually accounted for career-highs in passing and rushing yards last season. He threw for 3,369 yards passing and gained 641 yards on the ground. But Kaepernick's passer rating dropped to 86.4 – the first time it dipped below 90 in his career. The 49ers stumbled to a 8-8 record.

"He's got to be able to make plays with his arm," Tomsula said. "And our quarterback can. Colin can make plays with his arm. I'm terrible excited about Colin Kaepernick – extremely excited."

CEO Jed York alluded recently to Kaepernick's unique running ability, which he showcased with a 90-yard touchdown run late in the regular season against the San Diego Chargers. Tomsula said his coaching staff is studying the players to design a system that capitalizes on the players' strengths.

"We want to utilize the total package," Tomsula said. "Does that mean Colin Kaepernick is going to be the leading rusher every week? No. No plans on that. Let's use everything we have -- like we have done. Let's not act like that hasn't happened, either."

"Five words to re-kindle Jim Tomsula's NFL head-coaching image: "Well, let's try this again."

That's what Tomsula said when he started his podium session at the NFL combine today–and it was a good, light-hearted, and knowing public re-set for a man who surely has suffered too much for his awful first-day performance as the 49ers coach back in mid-January."

Give it 24-hours. Next he'll write that Bobby from PR is another example of Jed/Baalke using JT as a puppet. If you want any credibility around here, TK is probably the last person you should back up and quote given the utter destruction he's caused our franchise image over the years.

I'm not here to score points.

I think you're giving TK way too much credit if you think he's capable of causing any real damage the 49ers image. He's just one more talking head. People have the ability make their own minds up about things.
I'm at work, so I can't watch the presser yet, but I'm so pleased to read that JT has come out and addressed his performance in his opening presser head on. By all accounts he did a good job. Congrats JT!

Jim Tomsula says 49ers will 'transition' like anyone must do in life

Jim Tomsula spoke more at ease discussing the 49ers' coaching-staff transition Thursday at the scouting combine, his first press conference since last month's introductory session as head coach.

Although the 49ers defensive front will remain in the same scheme — three down linemen, four linebackers — Tomsula acknowledged that adjustments will be made under a coaching staff that no longer includes coordinator Vic Fangio and secondary coach Ed Donatell, among others.

"There's always transition," Tomsula said during his podium session, which was streamed on NFL Now. "Those guys are tremendous football coaches and we've had a lot of success. There's a transition. That's life. But we've got a group of guys that are ready to handle that. The guys in that room that are an even keel group when it comes to that stuff.

"There is transition, but we'll be fine."

Tomsula was not asked about former coach Jim Harbaugh's comments last Friday regarding Tomsula's potential role in becoming coach.

Unlike his rambling session Jan. 15, Tomsula was more to the point Thursday in discussing the 49ers' on-field systems, something he delayed doing until he fully assembled his staff of 19 assistants.

"The schematics on defense, the 34, our personnel is set for that and we'll continue in that way," Tomsula said. "Offensively, we're going to use the players we have. we've got some dynamic players. but obviously we want to run the football."

Tomsula endorsed the potential returns of Frank Gore, Justin Smith, Michael Crabtree and Vernon Davis. But the first-time coach also noted: "I don't have the checkbook."

Tomsula said he didn't bring his whole staff to the combine because he wanted some to study film of the team's current players. Regarding his staff, Tomsula said: "I take full responsibility for the results of the coaching staff and the team and the game-day results."

Tomsula owned up to his widely panned showing in his introductory media sessions, noting he didn't sleep well the previous night after being officially named coach. In his defense, he understandably looked uncomfortable wedged at a table between Trent Baalke and Jed York for the hour session, not to mention it was inside the same room that had been cast a pall following Harbaugh's exit and the ensuing post-mortem by Baalke and York.

"When I'm up here, I have to watch my manners and my language, and make sure I'm nice and polite," said Tomsula, the 49ers' defensive line coach the previous eight years. "That's what i have to get better at."

Another area he realized he needs improvement at is social media. He was briefed Thursday morning on quarterback Colin Kaepernick's retort on Twitter to criticism from a fan.

"I heard about it this morning. I hadn't seen it," Tomsula said. "To be brutally honest, I'm not a Twitter guy. I don't Tweet or look at Tweets. I'm not real good with all that stuff. I've been advised on the walk over here I need to get better at it. So I need to look into that."

Spoke to Jim Tomsula before his presser. I joked with him about his first presser. He said "yeah that was bad, you live you learn"#49ers

So glad he's not afraid to address his performance with a sense of humor. +1 Tomsula.

I think that is all well and good, but TK still ended the article you referenced with the dark cloud of suspicion that JT was responsible for undermining JH's tenure. I still think TK has an agenda to create discord.

All that's going on here is that Kawakami, a few other Bay Area sports writers and some hacks at ESPN and PFT have figured out that they get more clicks and create more interest for their sites by trolling Niner fans.

Just giving you a helpful tip...most in here don't even bother clicking on his links to give him "hits."

But to each his own!

Agreed. That . . . and for TK and Bay Area Sports Guy specifically I believe they enjoy inviting attacks from members of every Bay Area fan base so they can play the part of the poor sports journalist martyr supposedly "speaking truth to power".
I really enjoyed this presser compared to his first one. The guy might actually grow on me more and more. JimmyT baby!

Fair enough.

I like to read all angles. I don't care if a writer is negative - that's his/her prerogative.
