i picked them in 1971 cuz all my iowa friends like the vikings, i liked the colors, i liked the name, i like the names vic and gene washington and cedrick hardman. i also had a school boy crush on sally mcmillan in the tv show mcmillan and wife where she always wore a gene washington jersey to bed.
Everything...good and bad!
Part of what makes the NFL so addicting is that there are so few games and it's over so quickly. Football really only has games for five months of the year. That's seven months of enduring the offseason every year. And with only sixteen-game seasons, you're constantly salivating for more.

Contrast that to, say, any of the other major sports. Hockey and basketball have 82-game seasons; baseball has 162-game seasons. Plus, they all have playoff series, whereas football is obviously one-and-done.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is that with football, I'm constantly wanting more and longing for the offseason to end. I follow basketball and baseball pretty closely, but the sheer number of games makes it unrealistic to follow every game. It seems the older I get, the less free time I have to follow my teams.

With football, the limited number of games makes the stakes so much higher, and games generally feel more dramatic, meaningful and consequential.

My grandparents lived in San Bruno . First time I can remember being down their my grandfather drove me by the stadium , I was six (in 77) Once they drafted Joe Montana that was it I was hooked. My name is Joe and I am from Montana , Niners for life. Sad part is I always told my kids to pick a team and stick with them .Well my son loves the Titans he is 9 . He started liking them because of Marc Mariani who played for the GRIZ (University of Montana ). yet with their s**tty season he still wanted to go watch the Titans play a few weeks ago , My middle daughter like (shall I say it the Cowgirls ) I know I know where did my parenting go wrong . She only likes them to despise me she is stubborn that and her mother moved he to Texas when she was 10 . Now my oldest daughter is 23 and my baby girl and a Niner fan. Best part she married a cowgirl fan and she wears the pants in the family lol. So going on 37 years some good ,some bad , some great . Go Niners
#1 I grew up in cowboy country, and I hate the cowboys.
#2.Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Rodger Craig, and the list goes on.....
#3.The success of the 80's and 90's makes it impossible for me to root for any other team.

Call me a blind fan if you want but for me its quite simple - 9ers for life!!!
Steve Young. So much fun to watch.
There are a bunch of posts from people who became fans during the 9er Glory Years. I am curious to hear how the younger generation became fans. You know, the one's that became fans AFTER Steve Young.

Agree. I think it would be interesting. I became a fan back in 81 so I'm one of the glory year guys.
Stockholm Syndrome
Lived in the Bay Area my whole life and raised in a Niner family.
Because as a Cal native, my parents watched the Niners religiously and I am talking early 70s. It was what we did as a family and even though we didn't have a ton of money, we went to at least one game a year.

As a teen, we watched the 81 NFCCG in our den, the excitement and language were strong, but after Clark made "the catch", my dad and I jumped for joy and my mom was crying. She used to tell me that Joe Montana would make the difference on this team, she was a big ND fan. So our family bonded with football for the years that many kids put distance between their parents. We truly enjoyed it together and it made life fun. They are gone, but I will always be a Niner fan
