Yes but even with a supposed "defensive minded" coach previously they didn't come close to that.

This. It wasn't just the d-line, they've always had a good one. Austin coached them up to be a much better tackling defense. All 11 guys involved in shutting down the run.

One problem with this, the offense is a WRECK . It needs a major overhaul, and bring in an OC isn't gonna cut it.

A "major overhaul" isn't necessary. If we just had common sense on offense we'd be in the playoffs right now.

Need more than common sense. As of now, a 31 yr old running back is still your best runner, that aint gonna cut it. The offensive line can't pass protect. The running game is also suspect, and you can't blame injuries, something is wrong. You have no WR's that any defense considers a threat. There are no screen plays. And most important of all, you have a QB with shaky confidence that's almost destroyed. Sounds like an overhaul to me.
4th in the league in rushing, please tell me how that is suspect?

Why can't you somewhat blame injuries for the line? They had 1 I believe full game where all the starters played together and basically installed a different offense compared to the last 2 seasons.

You don't need a overhaul you need to put a system in place that plays to the players strengths and then make adjustments through out the season. Jim and Greg did not do this at all..

Who ran the #4 defense in Buffalo. So clearly he is better off being a coordinator.

Jim Fassel was interviewed on 95.7 this afternoon and was asked by Pop what he thought of the young coordinators getting interviews this year. He basically talked about how, when he interviewed with the Giants, the owner said that based on his work in Denver with Elway, he wouldn't have hired Fassel because it was tough to tell whether Denver's offensive success was primarily due to having a great QB. But then the owner commented that on every subsequent stop, Fassel improved the offense that he inherited and it was the incremental improvements shown on teams without a top tier QB that persuaded the Giants to hire Fassel.

Fassel went on to say that Gase and McDaniels need to move on from their current situations and coordinate for other teams to get out from under the shadows of their QBs. Without that type of seasoning, it is difficult (for Fassel at least) to gauge how good of coordinators these guys are, let alone whether they have HC qualities.

Say what you want about Jim Fassel, but from a guy that went through the process, moved around, and had success, it was a good bit of insight about how teams may be evaluating guys like Gase and McDaniels and even Hamilton.

Great insight!

Yeah, they all have great QBs to mask any of their inefficiencies. I'd feel more comfortable with a proven coach to take over right now. Especially given the fact that our team is pretty stacked with talent.

My problem with McDaniels specifically is he actually has experience as am HC and coordinador away from Brady and the results weren't good. No one would have considered him for an HC after his OC stint with STL. He may have even had a problem getting another OC stint immediately if not for Belichick taking him back. Of course he goes back to Brady and looks good again. I just don't see why team are interested based on that experience.

Some strange things related to coaching search:

1) The Raiders interviewed Pep Hamilton (and so will Bills); the 49ers could have but didn't (yet).
2) The Niners interviewed OCs Gase and McDaniels. Why not Pep?
3) The Niners will interview (or have interviewed) DCs Teryl Austin and Todd Bowles, and Dan Quinn. They don't don't have head coach experience. What does this say about Fangio? (just dotting i's and crosing t's?)
4) No official word yet on rest of current staff (only that Roman's contract expired and expected not be renewed).
5) Eric Mangini interviewed with the Raiders. (another smoke screen?). What's the deal with this guy?

I kind of expected the 49ers to ignore Pep Hamilton. He's from Harbaugh's coaching tree. Guilt by association.

I don't think interviewing other DC's is a bad sign for Fangio. Just covering all our bases. You never know who will come into the interview and impress you. Apparently, it was Fangio that knocked his interview out of the park. Was really happy to hear that.

Yeah, it's funny how fast the "David Shaw next 49ers HC" talk just ceased...as long ago as 1-2 years and as recently as Sept-Oct this season there were those who had him pegged as the next HC whenever Harbaugh "parted ways" with the 49ers. But I guess with both teams having bad years with TERRIBLE offenses that kinda killed the whole Stanford connection thing, including Hamilton.

For me, I've watched a lot of Stanford football, and while I don't hate Shaw and think he's good there on The Farm, I didn't want him anywhere near the 49ers.

I would be very worried if he was the next coach but from what has come out doesn't seem like he is at the top of the list.

Agree. I also watch a lot of Stanford football and it's concerning how that offense has started to drop-off ever year, just like here with the 49ers. If college football is catching on, the NFL is likely catching on at an even faster rate. You're not always going to completely dominate physically. You need superior schemes.

Looks like it's coming down to Shanny, Vic or Gase. I'd be happy with either one.

Still a little while to go before we have finalists.

very true. I think the 49ers are interviewing some college guys now, in addition to Mora Jr

That makes two of us and I'm not even a Stanford fan.
