Whoa, thanks for the heads up. I didn't know what year it was.
Wasn't sure with how much you want Holmgren, maybe you thought he was just now looking to get away from Green Bay.
I've always liked Holmgren a lot, and I get the age thing but only on a case-by-case basis. It sure sounded to me like he thought the Niners would be his dream job but they weren't interested. I just find that strange because of his record and his background.
Really, the only reason I've been somewhat partial to some of the older possible candidates is that I don't want them to lose Fangio. I think there are a few seasoned candidates like Holmgren and Shanahan who Fangio would be happy to keep his current position under. And the other thing I see with Holmgren and Shanahan is a history of working with strong-armed gun-slinger type QB's.

2) The Niners interviewed OCs Gase and McDaniels. Why not Pep?
3) The Niners will interview (or have interviewed) DCs Teryl Austin and Todd Bowles, and Dan Quinn. They don't don't have head coach experience. What does this say about Fangio? (just dotting i's and crosing t's?)
4) No official word yet on rest of current staff (only that Roman's contract expired and expected not be renewed).
5) Eric Mangini interviewed with the Raiders. (another smoke screen?). What's the deal with this guy?
Might be avoiding him because of his Stanford ties? I know he was not a Harbaugh hiring, but still. Who knows...
Did you see the playoff game? 44 passes and 25 rushes in that game. Hamilton was brought it to get the rush game going and has failed.

I kind of expected the 49ers to ignore Pep Hamilton. He's from Harbaugh's coaching tree. Guilt by association.
I don't think interviewing other DC's is a bad sign for Fangio. Just covering all our bases. You never know who will come into the interview and impress you. Apparently, it was Fangio that knocked his interview out of the park. Was really happy to hear that.

I believe this coaching search is very similar to teams setting up their draft when they're trying to put out as many smokescreens as possible to throw people off the trail. Don't ask me why they would do that but they probably still do. According to Jason La Canfora, CBS.com NFL insider (Who I don't believe most of the time), Baalork spent in excess of 6 hours interviewing Fangio and reportedly went very well, was very impressive FWIW.

The best part about all of this is this is the real question after we hire a coach isn't it? ---- Is Kap a SB winning QB?
Mike Shanahan will be the guy

Jim Fassel was interviewed on 95.7 this afternoon and was asked by Pop what he thought of the young coordinators getting interviews this year. He basically talked about how, when he interviewed with the Giants, the owner said that based on his work in Denver with Elway, he wouldn't have hired Fassel because it was tough to tell whether Denver's offensive success was primarily due to having a great QB. But then the owner commented that on every subsequent stop, Fassel improved the offense that he inherited and it was the incremental improvements shown on teams without a top tier QB that persuaded the Giants to hire Fassel.
Fassel went on to say that Gase and McDaniels need to move on from their current situations and coordinate for other teams to get out from under the shadows of their QBs. Without that type of seasoning, it is difficult (for Fassel at least) to gauge how good of coordinators these guys are, let alone whether they have HC qualities.
Say what you want about Jim Fassel, but from a guy that went through the process, moved around, and had success, it was a good bit of insight about how teams may be evaluating guys like Gase and McDaniels and even Hamilton.

Good points. Plus Holmgren is liked by the NFL FO and used to work on the competition committee. We might actually see some calls in OUR favor during critical moments of games.

McDaniels did "move on" from Brady and had the 15, 13 & 31st offenses. He ran back to NE because his career was falling apart. I wish Gase would of been an OC somewhere other then Denver, where it is impossible to judge how good he is. But chances are someone is going to hire him this off season.

I doubt Kubiak makes a lateral move.
