The best running back will always be a tie between the one week we had Rodney Hampton signed before he Giants matched the offer sheet and the couple weeks in the preseason we had johnny johnson
I'll say the same thing about Perry as I've said about Jim Brown. The game they played isn't the game you see today. Defenses are far more advanced and can easily scheme to shut down ANY player in the league today, or at any time for that matter. Back then, guys could use their superior physical attributes to dominate the game. That isn't the case anymore.
I can appreciate seeing a superior athlete do his thing and run wild, but if you placed Perry or Brown in today's bigger, faster and smarter NFL, I don't think they'd be anything close to the RBs they were when they played.
For those reasons, I'd say Gore is the best 49er RB ever. His vision is unmatched and he did the majority of his damage against modern defenses that usually only focused on stopping HIM and only him due to a lack of a passing game. He was literally all we had for the longest time and he STILL got it done.
You can't really compare players from different eras. If Jim Brown played in this era he would be the same Jim Brown with more training from an earlier age and have the benefit of advanced medicine. He'd be fine.
Since I was two years old in his last season I can't comment on where Joe the Jet should rank, I will have to trust my elders on that call. If you just look at stats he is in that rare 5 yard a carry group that has few members. Even though Craig gets a high marks for being an innovator with the 1,000 - 1,000 season, I think Frank passes him due to longevity. I will just say Frank slightly over Craig and Perry could beat them both but with limited film and being too young (ha,ha) I cannot rank him.
Yeah we were pulling out all the stops to improve the run game after the 1995 season. Hampton would have been a big addition if the Giants wouldn't have matched the offer sheet. He had 4 straight 1000 yard seasons.
Unfortunately, johnny Johnson was shot and never played again. We finally got it right in 1997 acquiring Hearst and having mooch install more of an Iform running game.

Yes indeed. Also improved the o-line as well. Brought over big Kevin Gogan
I'm a big fan of Craig (Who should be in the HOF) and Gore. I can't speak to these greats because they are before my time but what about adding them ad a unit to the conversation? Glad to see the Perry talk on here. :-)
Frank had s**t as an offense for nearly a decade and still beasted on fools. Frank>everyone else. craig was good, hearst was my childhood favorite but gore is the man, and at over 30 still looks like hes the man.
Also, Craig is my fav. but that was my youth. I had to add this...
Put him in the Hall already!
1st player to reach 1000 yrds rushing and 1000 yrds receiving in a single season.
1st player to score 3 TD's in a Super Bowl.
