This is why I just don't get the hate that some have for kap. He is still developing and he has skills that no one else in the league has. He is still just very much raw and we are just scratching the surface of his game. Its gonna take time, but I still think he is gonna get there.
I don't even think its going to take THAT much time.
i think the setback to the offense can be linked to the inconsistent line play. last year when kap was inconsistent the line was ok and we leaned on the run game until he got it together.. this year we couldn't even do that because the line was just not up to par this year. out of all the young qb's he's the one outside of luck i see making strides in the pocket passing department to go on top of the skills he has that can't be coached.
it's coming rapidly we just didn't get to see it all due to inconsistent play from top to bottom.

You are too kind jonesadrian. This is the key frame where Kap should still be looking at Patton's route to develop and gets into a throwing posture, but instead moves away from Patton to look at Alfonso Smith on the backside wheel route...Alfonso Smith...on a backside wheel route.
The only thing I can think of why kap would come off the concept side and look primarily at the wheel is that perhaps he thought his scrambling would create a coverage bust on the wheel.
Not a poor decision (not optimal either) but the swing as the second read is a much high % play than Patton (in theory). But it s/h/b a moot point anyhow with an inelligble player down field (Looney), I believe.
Someone posted some quotes by Steve Young (I think 816) about how Walsh wanted him to exhaust the play before taking off to run. This is an example of not exhausting the play. Kap simply didn't give the concept a chance to succeed. It was a concept designed to bust cover3 and SEA was in cover3. He ended up getting +8 on 2nd and 9 so it's not a failed net gain, but it didn't succeed within the confines of the playcall.
Steve Young:
"When you ask me about when the light went on, he started me thinking about it. And the truth is, it really started when Bill (Walsh) got hold of me. Because when Bill got hold of me I remember him pulling me aside and saying 'Steve, nobody knows where you are.' And I'd go run for 10 yards, or I'd scramble around and throw the ball for a nice completion or something and he'd say, 'That's great. But nobody knows where you are. And the truth is, if you really want to make the most of it — get everything out of the play that I call. You left early. You didn't explore every avenue or option. And people need to know where you are.' And I remember thinking 'Oh, crap. I better be where everyone expects me to be. And do everything that everyone expects me to do with this play. I've got to exhaust it.'

Kap still needs to be reigned in. Part of that will be aided by having confidence in his Oline. The other parts are coaching and hard work.
Once the light goes on for a mobile qb, they are damn near unstoppable. We saw it with steve and too a lesser extent Garcia. It just takes time and as you said hard work to be willing to make the most out of plays.
if he was a running qb he would lead the league in carries, he'd have every excuse to play like vick did in atlanta behind this line.. look at the option.. not there then run.
he's forced himself to play the pocket which i think he's really good at right now as far as manuevering when there's a chance to BUT with that he's turned off the threat.
when he rolls out right he's not in threat position, it's a side step straddle and the defense side steps with him. but side stepping is how he keeps his eyes trained down the field. the next step is rolling out decisively as if you could go ahead and run and the defenders will pull on a dead on sprint to come and get him.. we all know this. so when he does that people will automatically open up because they just are not going to let him get 181 yards on them like he did on the packers.
that's the next step for him.

now i agree with this. he has to find the happy medium. he needs to move forward more decisive as if he's going to run so they can react.
that's one more step that will make it better. he does it at times but he doesn't do it consistently if he did it consistently they're in a no win situation.
even though we don't run him as much as we used to, teams still over play him and put spy's on him just because of the threat of him running. we need to do more moving pockets and move those spy's out of open area's and let the receivers slide right in behind them
Exactly...when you know you are gonna get spied, there are areas to exploit. It would be stealing in most cases.
Nobody is spied more than Kap. He doesn't even run the zone read much anymore doesn't get designed qb runs that often but they are making sure he doesn't run on them. We really could run a flat out misdirection offense and just kill teams every week. wherever he goes the entire defense is going and send the offensive options in the opposite direction.
I think Kap's arm allows this to be a legit strategy. Because he has a strong arm and can throw from odd body positions, run these type of plays and force the defense to defend the entire width of the field, even when Kap rolls to one side of the field. Any other QB, there isn't a need to defend a WR on the other side of the field. With Kap, the other side of the field is in play.
From week 13 (Thanksgiving)
Exactly
you can pull up the same play to boldin from that game. the gore td against philly the crab pass 50 yards down the field from the complete opposite side of the field
at every opportunity to run a roll out and throw back pass it has been WIDE open for this team. and will continue to be.
he has a spy every single game. he hasn't been a dedicated runner since 2012-2013 playoffs it hasn't been a serious part of our game plan since then but the threat is enough to draw all defenses in. he is the play action..
i think if we slightly moved the pocket instead of a complete roll out on some plays it would be enough to get the entire defense to flow away from where he wanted to go.
imagine the play from this gif with a clean pocket and ellington on the other side of the field wide open
