lol at all this Holmgren talk, this aint 1997

Won a conference title in 2005, had a top 10 offense in 2007 (his second to last yr coaching.) league is not that different from 2008, we trade wildcat for read option and more teams run a tempo offense.

First off that s**t was almost 10 years ago and he had a top passer as a QB (keyword top passer) in Matt Hasselbeck. Holmgren would be working with a QB he's not used to working with in a scrambling weak pocket passer QB in Colin Kaepernick. Time to move on.

Incredible article. One of my favorite parts: "The team is 9-26. Walsh may still be the answer. Heck, Montana may be, too. But the 49ers need to run much more if they want to win. And when they pass, it wouldn't hurt if they actually threw it downfield."

Who knew? People were just as likely to jump to conclusions 34 years ago as they are today. And they're just as likely to pretend they know more about football than the head coach.

LOL...yes, and that writer is still active and publishing in prominent sports sites. Hopefully, he's admitted Walsh knew more than he did but somehow I doubt it. There always seems to be so much absolute certainty proved totally wrong...in the media and on this site. Good to keep an open mind!

Yeah holmgren never had any experience with a running qb (young '87-91) or a young strong armed unorthodox qb (Favre 92-98). Young & Favre were considered everything you just called colin when he came into the league.

Actually, his experience with Young and Favre are one of the main reasons I think he would be a viable option if he were available.

LOL! Poor guy would be totally lost trying to teach the QB position! Never had any success!

"Through three weeks, the 49ers are 5th in passing yards. Montana is leading the NFL in completion percentage. The problem: the team is 1-2, and Montana's pick six against Atlanta is one of the reasons why. When Jim Plunkett led the Raiders on a magical run a few months ago, he didn't do it by throwing short passes. Plunkett completed just 53% of his passes, but he averaged 17.1 yards per completion in those four playoff games. For his career, Montana has completed 64% of his passes but averaged a pitiful 10.5 yards per completion. Which approach do you think works better, the one that won the Super Bowl or the guy who has a career record of 3-8?"

I love the "pitiful 10.5 yards per completion" comment!

That's funny
Heck I remember Kenny King taking a short pass 80 yards in the Super Bowl for a TD, pretty sure that did a lot to make that 17.1 average and that was a credit to King not Plunket.

Yes, and he's old enough to have his ego in check so he could help a young OC learn how to be a great coach. When the team hired John McVay he'd been out of football for a couple of years but had great contacts and was able to help Walsh put together a very strong team. His title was director of football operations. I see no reason the 9ers couldn't hire Holmgren to be either HC with a young OC or HOF with Baalke as GM. It would be important to define their responsiblities very carefully but then would be up to Jed to manage them effectively.

Exactly...and I promise you this roster is a lot more talented then the ones he took over in Gb in '92 and sea in '99. In both places he made them relevant and at least got to a super bowl and was a constant divison threat.

LOL...yes, I'm a big fan of Plunkett but he had been beaten to smithereens in NE and dumped by the niners and now held up as the guy because he had finally found success on a well run team. Just proves again how important coaching is!

He was quarterback coach for both Montana and Young. He totally re-fashioned Favre's approach to the game and had a lot to do with his success in the 90's. He had something to do with making Matt Hasselback (!?) a Super Bowl quarterback. He was the OC in 89 for really one of the top five offenses in franchise history.

Other than the fact that he's 66 years old, I don't know why anyone would have any reservations about Holmgren.

Holmgren is on the short list of the greatest offensive minds this game has ever seen. The notion that the NFL is SO much more advanced than it was in the 2000's is laughable.

Pretty sure his comment was made sarcastically.

Like Dilfer said, Holmgren is definitely a guy that could help Kaepernick. Nothing that Kaepernick is going through is something new to Holmgren, that he hasn't previously dealt before, so that's a big plus in his column.

I don't know that I can think of anyone that I would trust more to "fix" Kaepernick than I would Holmgren. I think guys like Gase and Hamilton could call offense that plays to his strengths, but in terms of the nuts and bolts of it, Holmgren could probably rebuild him and make him better.

Man with all this Mike Holmgren talk. Lets make sure to interview Sam Wyche for the head coaching job! He is only 69, that's not old right! I mean you are all okay with Holmgren being 66. Wayche was Joe Montana's first QB coach with the 49ers! You cant get better then that! As we all know he took Cincinnati to the Superbowl... And almost won it! Boomer Esiason had 3 pro bowl seasons under him! His 64 wins with the Bengals is 2nd best in franchise history! He was a QB coach in 2005 so he hasn't been out of the game that long. The guy knows offense!
honestly i'd see what rich kotite is up to
