The second problem would be finding an OC who could be trained by Holmgren to take over when he retires.
A guy like Holmgren might be up for retooling a very good team and then stepping aside. Not sure about his health or what he would think of Kaepernick.
You certainly would have to worry about that relationship considering Holmgren's past. But, I've read that Holmgren has an itch to just coach and not bother with all of the other things. His health is fine. He's 66 and in good shape. He's five years younger than Parcells was when Baalke was wanting him to come to the team. And again, Fangio definitely respects Holmgren as an elder statesman of NFL coaches and I think it could be easier to retain Fangio with a guy like Holmgren coming in.
MH can continue to be on the competition committee and GET THE REFS AND THE NFL ON OUR SIDE FOR A CHANGE!

A lot of old school 49er fans here... awesome... he can bring back the true WCO...
Holmgren is proven...he has gone to 3 Superbowls with 2 different teams... Won one with the Packers... Had a bad break against the Steelers in another Superbowl with Seattle... and he can keep the Bill Walsh coaching tree alive!
I always wanted to have Holmgren take over for Bill Walsh in 1989, but the 49ers chose Seifert. Seifert and the Niners won the Superbowl that year, but that Superbowl was largely Walsh's team so I think Holmgren would have won it all as well. Seifert was way too conservative and wasn't really a keen strategist. The 49ers lost 3 NFC Championships in the next 4 years. I think Holmgren could have won multiple Superbowls with the Niners if he were coach instead of Seifert. Holmgren's Packers went on to beat Seifert's 49ers in 1995 & 1996 and won his own Superbowl in the 1996 season.
I also preferred Shanahan to Seifert and was really disappointed to see him go instead of Seifert after the Niners won in 1994. Shanahan went on to win a Superbowl for the 1997 and 1998 seasons with the Broncos. So that was a great stretch for coaches under the Bill Walsh tree. Seifert won in the 1994 season, Holmgren in 1996, and Shanahan in 1997 & 1998.
Finally instead of Mariucci, I always preferred Pete Carroll to take over for Seifert because he was one of the most effective and aggressive Niners DC's in 1995 & 1996 ... Carroll more than a decade later got his Superbowl.
With Holmgren we would really be able to continue on the 49er and Bill Walsh tradition...and that would be fantastic!![]()

We better invest in one of these then..
The Bill Walsh era is over. You cant dominate the NFL with his playbook anymore. Holmgren is old, and hes been out of coaching far too long to keep up with todays game.
People need to let the Walsh stuff go. Its not coming back. It was a period of time in the NFL where he caught the league off guard and dominated for nearly 2 decades. But, it has been figured out for the most part.

6 years as an actual NFL coach and only two as an OC isn't what i call lots of NFL expedience.
I hear you, but it's good enough for me. What I don't want are retreads like Holmgren or Shanny. Young, innovative, with lots to prove is what I want. The 49er veteran core (Gore, Justin, Boldin) is about to wave bye bye and I want a young-ish type coach to lead the team.
These four points made my ears perk up:
1. QB-friendly offense
2. Zone blocking
3. NFL experience as a HC and OC
4. Younger

Out of all of these I'd prolly take Gase or Hamilton. I dont like the idea of old farts that were good a decade ago.

FYI, might as well pull Gilbride out of retirement if you like that offense. He runs it better. Has a couple of SB rings to show for it.
But if you bring Buddy Ryan out of retirement to run the '46' defense and you bring Gilbride out of retirement to run the offense, there's a chance that Buddy might take a swing at Gilbride on live national television again and wouldnt that be entertaining.
This is pure Awesomeness. Hell, we should write a script and send it to the Farrelly Brothers. Ferrell and Reilly could play Giblride and Ryan. Freak'n GOLD.

what exactly has been figured out ?
the league is now an extremely pass-happy league
most good passing teams move the ball by throwing short passes, which replace conventional running the ball
the league is extremely pass-friendly league in terms of timing routes, because defenders cannot breath on a offensive player
did I mention that the league is extremely pass happy ? you have a guy on a team that likely wont be above .500 completing 70% of the passes.
teams are so afraid of big play they will give up positive yardage to bend but not break. this is why good passing offenses can methodically march down the field, and unlike our offense, dont have to settle for 'chunk yards/3 and out punt' drives.
todays league is heaven for west coast offense. the chiefs are prime example of it and chiefs WR suck and their qb is not a great qb at all. these chiefs wouldnt be in contention 20 years ago purely off talent.

Quote: "He's such a creative playcaller and play designer," Colts backup quarterback Matt Hasselbeck said. "He can change on the fly instantly. He likes to be able to call plays in all formations from all personnel groups at the line of scrimmage in a short amount of time."
"I would say this, on our hot streak, he's called great games," Hasselbeck said. "The first half against Houston was amazing. He had [Texans defensive coordinator] Romeo Crennel on his heels. That's hard to do because he's one of the best defensive coaches.
"I've been around a lot of different coaches and you can tell when a guy has a bright future. Pep is that guy. It'll be a short amount of time before he's a head coach somewhere, wherever he chooses. Pro or college will be his call on what he wants."
Matt Hasselbeck grew up in the WCO, do you need to be any more convinced?!

well yes technically he is under contract another year. But teams don't usually force assistants to stay on with a new staff if they don't want to.
Teams usually don't deny position coaches the opportunity to interview for coordinator jobs, but we did that to Donatell two years in a row...

I would take glowing reports from players and coaches with a grain of salt. I bet if you asked him right now Kap would have some pretty positive things to say about Roman. The one issue i have with Hamilton is he was brought to Indy to run Harbaughs offense. He was supposed to run a power run game so Luck didn't have to do everything. Right now Indy is #1 in passing with Luck leading the NFL with 544 pass attempts (he is on pace for 670 and which would put him tied for 4th all time and 43 more then his career best of 627 as a rookie) and they are 18th in rushing.

So you're pretty happy with the Power Run version of the WCO they are running now? Hey...it worked for Schembechler...oh wait...we can't live in the past!
Sorry, just think you are totally off with this post. Clue: Holmgren = alive and only 66, Walsh = dead
If anyone starts opening the crypt then you may be right.

Can't really blame Hamilton that their GM whiffed on Trent Richardson doe!
