Will 49ers Retire Frank Gore's Number?

He put up big numbers here. Thats not what getting your number retired signifies. Its a sign of respect. The 49ers dont respect Owens. He showed his true colors at the end of his tenure, and he spit in the face of this franchise.

Were you following the team when he left? It was one of the most immature, ugly ways a player could leave a team. He threw a fit, flipped us off, and held us hostage until we traded him where HE wanted to go. The Ravens offered a much better package, but he turned it down. He demanded Philly, and we gave him up for almost free.

Hes was a big baby, and despite his great play in red and gold, he burned his bridges and never even apologized.

Theres is a reason a top 3 WR in NFL history that played the majority of his career here has never had his number retired, and has been given out to other WR's for over a decade. He doesnt deserve it.

ya I was following, I've watched every 49ers game since I moved to America at the age of 5, literally haven't missed one game. I'm aware of all the trouble and drama TO caused us. But I will always look past his attitude and imaturness, and keep my eye on his play, which will always be among the greatest to ever do it.

I'm not denying he was a head case, rude, selfish, etc... But you live and you learn. 2 yrs ago when TO was retired and trying to come to the NFL, no one would sign him, but I watched him on sportsnation when he was pleading his case that he's been working out and can still play, and guess what jacket he was wearing? Could have wore anything he wanted, but he chose a 49ers jacket. That told me a lot. Let me know that he wanted to come back and play for us. And of all teams he's played for he held us closest to his heart.

give him credit where credit is due, which other than his play, he stopped causing locker room issues after he left Philly, he didn't cause damage in Dallas or Cinci as far as I can recall, and donte whitner spoke on his behalf when they were teammates in buffallo claiming TO was a changed man and a great teammate. This was at the time when he was with us on the 9ers and putting in a good word for Owens at the time when he was trying to get signed. and damn I woulda loved to see him toss on #81 for the 49ers one last time.

I give him all the credit he earned as a player. He was an all time great.

But, retiring a number is an honor reserved for not only great players, but great men. You have to mean a lot to the organization. Owens put up big numbers, but he never earned the honor as a 49ers legend to have his number retired.

The 49ers very much agree, because they have handed out number 81 on a yearly basis since he left. BY's 97 has never been worn since he retired, because he earned that honor, and will get his number retired someday.

the niners already have like 13 retired numbers, plus 72 and 97 are unofficially retired i think. I feel like Gore definitely deserves the honor but we're going to run out of numbers soon. Especially because they might unofficially retire 52 now also

they will probably at least put it out of commission for a few years

My guess is that they will not retire either Gore or Willis' numbers.

Thats not the reason I think we should retire it, thats just a bonus. His play is the reason. Dude was one the greatest to ever play his position, I dont care if he retired young. So did Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, and Calvin Johnson.

Nah. Jed wasn't even willing to give Gore an average salary to finish out his career as a 9er.

All-time leading rushing leader. Carried the team during the Nolan-Singletary years. Putting all that aside, he was all heart. Hang the jersey from the rafters.

you do know Brown and sanders did a lot more in their short career then what Willis and Johnson did.

So, I don't wanna be that guy, but if Gore had taken that long 4th quarter Super Bowl run to the house and scored a go-ahead TD that our D could have defended to the buzzer, instead of getting gassed and caught from behind to leave the game in the hands of Haromankapcrab, and the hilarity that ensued, 21 gets enshrined in jerseydom.
But for that, he falls short of championship lore, that a retiered number requires....AS GREAT A 49ER AS HE WAS.
(Except for those couple of players they retired, pre-SB trophy days)
