Week 9 - 2014: Thoughts after rewatching the game...

I'm pretty down right now, been a rough morning. They always just leave me with the "what if". It's happened already three times this year where a play or two changes the fortune of our season.

I don't mind the first down call, yes it's extremely aggravating that Kap and Crab are the least clutch duo...but Crabs was open, Kap threw a poor pass, and yet I still believe it was a TD.

I do hate the 2nd down call, we've seen that play so many times, it's not fooling anyone. If you are going to pass on 2nd down, let Stevie, Boldin or Crabtree go one on one.

Lastly on 3rd down, I'm fine with the QB sneak and think it was the right call. In no scenario did I think he would fumble, that's on Kap even if Martin got pushed back, he still managed to get into the endzone. It's just too bad he lost the ball or else the play call once again worked.

I think a lot of blame should go on Roman, if they are playing cover zero and sending pressure, why don't we have any quick hitting 3-step drop back plays. I can think of one but Kap rifled a 5 yard pass to Crabtree...also can't remember Kap ever leading us to a game winning drive, I can definitely remember him failing though in huge situations.

What a s**tty feeling

You line the biggest fatty or Miller up in the backfield and run it behind him and Iupati/Martin/Boone for that 1 yard. If you can't get it done, THEN you try a naked bootleg run-pass option with CK.

:42 1st and goal from the 2 1/2 yard line? I'm OK taking a shot at the EZ here with a pass to, surprise surprise, Crabtree (eh?!). But have CK and Crabtree EVER executed this play? Ever? Maybe try someone like JOHNSON!? But the pass call on 2nd down and 1 was horrendous IMHO. The design was even worse. They run Miller as the lead blocker with Gore behind him and run both off right T for an all-or-nothing PASS to Gore? They both ran so slowly out of the backfield, I almost thought it was a run call (hand off to Gore or CK-keeper?). In fact, Gore was even "blocking" in the EZ not even looking for the pass (was it a QB-keeper call?). Horrendous! Now we're back to 3rd and goal and everyone in the stadium now knowing we're going to run...QB sneak call after seeing some expected new-Center-QB exchange fails (CK shaky all game long here) earlier in the game? Genius! Fail. Everything is ass-backwards IMHO when it comes to RZ play calling and designs and personnel.

These are all the points I was screaming about last night. I mentioned it in another thread. I mean we just completely botched up an easy scoring opportunity to win a game. How do you do that? With a timeout in your pocket? It's playcalling plain and simple. That first down roll out for Gore and Miller was just horrendous. From the call down to the execution. We stink so bad in the RZ. I don't get why Harbaugh fails to address this.
It's funny how we all expected the defense to be the weakness of the team without Aldon, Bowman, and all new secondary and the offense was going to be the unit that carried the team now with all these new weapons and the growth of McDonald and Patton, etc. LOL nope.
It seems like Kap allows himself to get sacked a lot to put us outside of FG range. It happened twice yesterday. Dude MUST know the situation and understand he should not sit in that pocket and be ready to scramble quicker than other areas on the field or let that ball go for a strategical incompletion.

I seriously think we have a dumb QB.

Personally I was yelling for the QB sneak on 2nd down and 3rd down. But I had an eery feeling something would go wrong because truthfully the Niners didn't deserve to win the game. Fumbled QB sneak from the 1 with 2 seconds to play. May not be until the season's over that we realize how epic that really was. You don't see many games end like that. That's the type of year were having. In our own way CONSTANTLY

In regards to Crabs, you're blaming him for f**king up that easy TD? That was on Kap. He had to comeback on that pass.

He was also wide open on the third down on the second to last drive. Should have been another big play. Crabs has had a rough season, but yesterday I can't fault him for too much.

As I said...its just like they in different booked let alone the same page.

As for the TD...all he had to do was pull the ball over the line. He voluntarily rolled out of bounds.

So the throw was supposed to force Crabtree to dive for the ball and then roll back into the endzone?

Am I somehow unclear?

I'm not saying it was a great throw. NOBODY is arguing that.

I'm saying Crab had the opportunity to score with it as it was.

Well at least we dont have to wait till the playoffs for kap to choke away a game he did it in the middle of the year.

Great point. I feel way better now.

Yeah, another theme. That's coaching as well. "Kaep, we're in FG range. If the play is there, take it but if not, don't eff around back there and take a sack...get rid of the ball!" Not hard, yet we see these same stupid mental errors at the worst possible moments so often by a veteran team that it's hard to conceive. Like having two false starts backing yourself up against your own goal line. Who does that at home? We do! Bad teams find good ways to lose. It's that simple. The sad thing, talent-wise, we're a top 5 team if not higher.

You had that feeling b/c CK had already botched 2 on his own (HE was shaky) and another b/c of Martin, etc. In normal circusmstances, with a 10-foot QB, you just call two sneaks there but given the exchange issues, I'd go with Gore/Hyde behind a Miller lead block right up the gut of off either G.
I put almost all the blame on the O-line. I thought it was telling near the end of the game when Tomsula of all people went over to the O-line and yelled at them. It wasn't just Miller, A. Davis was terrible, Staley was terrible, Iupati was bad, Boone sucked.

You can't expect CK to play well with that kind of pressure. But you can expect him to hold onto the football on that last play. If he scored, we win. If he didn't score, we kick a FG and still might win. He did the only thing that could lose the game. He is stupid.
1 - The Kaepernick to Crabtree slant route should be banned forever from the 49ers playbook - overused with little positive result.

2- I read awhile back that the reason we don't call screen passes is because our offensive line isn't built for that. Serious question: How many other teams do this?!

3- Next week in N.O. is gut check time. We lose, I think our season is done, not only in the sense that we don't make the playoffs but also, even if we squeak in, we'll get run over by whoever we play. If we win, this team makes the playoffs via the wild card and we become the team no one wants to play. I'm leaning towards us beating little Breeze and co. and getting back on track.

4 - This defense is all-world - in the top 10 against the pass and the run. It's criminal that they're saddled with such an inconsistent offense.

5 - When Aldon gets back, I think JJ Watt and J. Clowney will have competition for the scariest pass rush duo in the NFL. Lynch is a Beast.

6 - I felt as bad after this loss as I did with the S.B. and when Kyle Williams fumbled that catch.
Heres the real reason for our downward spiral ...
remember when kap came in and what we did that year , well it was because we were a run first power take yr head off team . That made things easier for kap , teams feared the run . Now with kap being our leader and shiny new toy were trying to become the broncos and make kap into peyton . We need to go back to making peoples noses bleed from the run game and our beloved niners will b fine . When kap came in he ran with authority and took off when he wanted too , now were trying to make him sit in a pocket and throw .. let kap be himself and he will regain his form . Give gore the ball roman you idiot .

Season is done. Seriously, how many points do you think NO will score? 13 or greater? If yes, then, that's it. Because I don't see the 49ers throwing up more than 9... Which is a success by Roman standards.

I don't agree. It is a good thing that the coaches are trying to get Kap pocket-ready for the playoffs. I think the biggest factor this season is assuming we will be in the playoffs. ARI, DAL, PHI, DET, GB are some of the surprise reasons as to why what we assumed may not happen.
