Ok let me post the bait coverage, should be up in 10 minutes. Then it will make the 80 yard TD throw make a lot of sense in terms of wtf the Rams were trying to do.

Rams show a cover2 look. They are known for playing tampa2 quite often. This is what they want Kap to think. With that in mind (tampa2) Kap will look to hit VD over the middle once the MLB vacates the middle of the field.

Immediately after the snap, the MLB (blue rectangle) bails to his deep zone responsibility. Kap sees this and confirms Tampa2. What he doesn't see are the two safeties (orange arrows) coming downhill. It's still Tampa2, but instead of the two safties and the MLB playing the three deep zones, it's going to be the two CBs and the MLB playing the three deep zones.

VD just caught the ball and with the safeties attacking downhill, Rams bait the throw to the middle of the field, only to have a safety on the spot to make the tackle that results in the 49ers coming up short on the 3rd down attempt.

To play off that post:

This is 35 seconds left in the 2nd Qtr. They give a textbook tampa 2 pre-snap look with the 2 high safeties, deep LB and press coverage on the single receiver side.

They're trying to bait a throw by CK.

generally, the QB's read on a tampa 2 will be the MLB. He's going to look to make sure the MLB is taking a deep middle drop - that changes the coverage between a "tampa" 2 created by Tony Dungy or a regulard cover 2 zone. So, at the snap the MLB takes a deep middle drop - shading towards the multiple receiver side - trying to show a "tampa" 2 look.

What I've done here is try and show how they are baiting the throws. The yellow is where they're playing. The Red is where a typical "tampa" 2 coverage will be. You can see how they are trying to show the tampa 2 and then play all the holes of the tampa 2. They're trying to bait a throw into the usual holes of the tampa 2 so they can either make a stop or an INT. That's something Greg Williams does from time to time. When he was with the Saints, he did something very similar to this against Peyton Manning in the super bowl. The problem is, CK doesn't bite it.

Because they're playing so aggressive on the underneath routes, the corner bites on Lloyd's double move.

After he bites, the corner is effed. The deepest guy to help him is a MLB..... no help.

Lloyd gets separation and the rest is history.

It's a big risk/reward defense - which they lost big time. This was the turning point in the game. But, you see how the Rams were trying to bait us.

Good description in that the deepest help is a MLB. That is just bad considering the game situation. Jenkins can be blamed for biting on the head fake by Lloyd, but the coveage call itself is an aggressive one. When a defender hears an aggressive coverage call, they will naturally think aggressively, because they understand what the DC is trying to accomplish. That a big reason why I think Jenkins bites on the head fake, he's thinking aggressively on this play, just like his DC is.

One other aspect to consider is that the 49ers lulled the Rams to sleep on this drive. Here are the list of plays leading up to this Lloyd TD. It shows no urgency to strike downfield, no urgency to get into FG range before the half ends:

1st Down: Hyde run for -1
2nd Down: Short pass to Boldin for +12
1st Down: Short pass to Boldin for +8
Timeout SF
False Start for -5
2nd Down: Short pass to Hyde for +1
Bomb to Lloyd...Touchdown

I think the Rams were thinking the 49ers were going to throw a meaningless dinky passes to run off the clock so they came with an aggressive call to rob the middle of the field. Suckers.
thanks for the hard work guys. I can't remember seeing many teams running a lot of the Tampa-2 switch on us, and I can't really figure why not. It's obviously a coverage that is primarily based upon deception, but it probably works better against us as a base coverage than most of what we face. We rarely take shots outside this year, and we often try to catch and run for first downs. The zone concept with the safeties gives them instant run support, should Kap scramble, and they shouldn't feel terribly threatened on the outside.

Great job fellas!!

I just love the way Lloyd caught that ball effortless..

now, if we can call more similar plays like that game in and game out.. heck, the way the refs are calling penalties on coverage, we can have those big plays because of our WRs abilities on jump balls!!
Lots of good this game. I actually thought Bethea started out very poor...Reid and Culliver and even Cox (poor angle) were about even and then everyone settled down and it was lights out from there. Double move TD by Lloyd, Crabtree's in-out-in TD route, etc. That's pretty much all I needed to see to be very happy. Rams wanted to stack the box...good job Roman by attacking them in the air and well done PP OL! Sure, we rammed our head right into that brick wall quite a few times but it kept the Rams honest. I'd like to see an instant audible/check system in place for when we genuinely think a team is going to run blitz with 10 men in the box. That should be a TD every single time and I don't care if we're on the 99 yard line! I don't care if we're already IN the jumbo package...we should still be able to pass out of it with only 1 WR (usually Boldin) esp. with our TE's, FB, RB and eligible receivers (i.e. Staley).

Can anyone post the play where Bethea sacked the QB..

I just remembered this because had he not gotten there, I think there was a wide open WR that Reid didn't even bother covering..
This is a bit of a weird play. I'm not sure if this was a designed RB swing pass or confusion by Miller/Gore. But, if it's a swing pass - I kinda like the design.

here, we're going to run a curl with Crabs, streak with VD and a middle hook with Boldin. The difference is, both Miller and Gore flare out to the flat up top.

Ck pump fakes towards Crabs. This is part of why I think it's a designed swing pass. You see how Miller and Gore flare out - but with a staggered depth. It's like Miller is going to be the lead blocker for Gore.

After the pump fake though, CK comes back and see's Boldin open for a short gain.

You see how Gore and Miller are out there, it looks like they had a little space to move, would've been tough though as the 3 defenders were gonna close quick. But, I like this design against man-coverage as you'd have Miller on one LB with the 2nd having to fight through Boldin and his defender to get to the flat. I think that's why CK took the pass to Boldin - the zone coverage blew up the play. At this point - St. Louis had played a bit of man-coverage on 2nd down(this was 2nd down).

Big plays are great - believe me I was loving that play - but they're very hard to set up. There's only a handful of 50 yard+ TD passes every year from any team and even fewer 70yard + plays. It takes a blown coverage to do that. You can call them up all game if you want, but unless someone majorly blows a coverage - you're not gonna get em.
That was actually the longest play allowed in the last 15 seconds of a 1st half since the 1970 merger.

Holy crap...I love this design! You can run ANYONE behind Miller out there and the fact that CK looks to his right just makes this design work even better. Imagine Ellington or Johnson trailing Miller here. One block by Miller and he's gone!
