Was this the game that went the entirety of OT in Candlestick? I have memories of staying up pretty damn late on the east coast for a Philly MNFer.

I would have posted about it on the Zone that morning but my AOL wasn't working.

BTW, freaking Bavaro brought back some old Giants' wounds in that blowout loss too.

Yeah it was a late OT game, I remember it being my last day of Christmas break of my freshman year of high school. Needless to say that was a real s**tty Tuesday morning the next day.

Haha, we are the same age then.

BTW, it was noteworthy that I mentioned late OT, because I believe we were beaten by a FG as time expired. I really thought we were gonna get a tie that game. That stuck with me all of these years.

Also I believe there was a pick 6 or fumble 6 against us to start the game.

I had to recheck the box score, I think your right how it ended. It looks like we pulled guys because steve was 15-19 for 160ish and Bono had over 200 yards passing. Bubby Brister lit is up for them tho, 380 and 3 scores.

Still unable to explain why the '94 team got destroyed by Philly. Perhaps that game was parallel to our woes this season were a team had been on the cusp for 2 straight seasons, and needed motivation for that season...I dunno.

Oddly enough the Philly game was the last game in 1994 a wore non throws jerseys. In total we where 15-1 in the throwbacks, 11-0 in the reds and 4-1 in the whites. The PF-PA in the throws was 567-287.

That was the game Steve Young went nuts on Seifert on the sidelines for benching him. Was said to have brought the players closer together that year.

I remember steve just yelling towards seifert and at qb coach kubiak. I couldn't imagine how this forum would have been after that game if it existed.

I was in shock after the 40-8 blowout by the Eagles. They Eagles just had a dominant defense at the time and matched up well with us on offense. The next week, the Niners went up to Detroit and fell behind 14-0 early....but then a switch flipped, Young and the offense came to life and blew out the Lions, and they didn't really look back after that. They would only lose a meaningless game to Minnesota at the end of the regular season after that.

The one loss came against the Vikings in the season finale bc the Niners had home field locked up and rested their starters. I think Young only played for a quarter that game.

It was a dominating offense led by Young, Rice Taylor Jones, Floyd Watters.

And our defense was just as lethal.

I would argue the 1994 Niners were better than our 1989 and 1984 squads.

1989 was the best 49er team ever

It is nitpicking, but I agree. 1984 was probably the best all around team, 1989 had more star power with Rice and Taylor.

1994 is interesting. It's a team that was probably the most REGULAR SEASON dominant.....I remember thinking the only way our offense could be stopped in the passing game would be for receivers to drop the ball. When we got very efficient late in the year, it was ridiculously scary.

However, what takes '94 down slightly are two things:

1) I like Montana > Young for postseason
2) Trenches wise, I'm not sure if '94 was as good as '80s teams

Not just regular season dominant. We beat down the Bears in the Divisional 44 to something, and then crapped all over the 2 time defending SB Champ Cowboys. The Chargers aren't even worth mentioning.

All in all we cruised through the postseason, and the regular season was a joke after losing to the Eagles (we also lost to Montana's Chiefs with a patchwork oline).

I still give the edge to the 94 team over the others not just bc of offense (that's debatable) but rather that Deion would shut down half the field as corner. I don't think any one player on the 80s squad could do that.

I don't like having to give any credit to that man. While he was an important part for us getting #5, knowing what we know now about him and his distaste for our team, I cannot endorse the '94 team as #1 for that reason alone.
Another nuance for '89 over '94:

A more dominant John Taylor. Both as a receiver and punt returner (although he wasn't returning punts that year, but was in '95).

As JTsBiggestFan, I cannot overlook this important point.
I'm from Texas and it's cowboy country here, I remembering watching that game with a bunch of cowboy fans and they hate me oh they really hated me lol! That team is third all time though, 84 was dominant all around, probably the best defense 49ers ever had, but 89 is the most talented, we lost two meaningless games by a total of 5 points. But if u look at that roster and the results it's a scary team they put together they basically had the same team in the 1990 but the running game was not there all year, I think that played a big factor against the giants that year. For some sad reason I go back and think of all the missed opportunities (the Vikings 87', Craig's fumble, cowboys 92', 93', greebay 97', Kyle Williams, third and goal in the Super Bowl, and kap's 4th quarter choke.) we should have at least, AT LEAST! 5 more Super Bowls. But I guess I should be great full I could have been a browns fan.

I tend to do the same.. thinking about the near misses. I'd also include 1983 with the bogus calls vs Washington in the NFCCG, and I'd even include 1998 as a "what could have been" season.
