With the play of the backup QB's, I'm surprised they didn't give Bruce Ellington a shot at QB to throw a good wrinkle in there. They gave him a little work at the beginning of camp as an emergency QB.
Heck, he played QB his senior season of high school and lead his team to a state championship. He could play some wildcat or throw a pass and race down field and catch it for a 20 something yard gain! LOL

Anything is better than what I saw out of the backups today. At least give Ellington some good passes from Kap and see what he can do. Bad throws from the backups aren't doing him any favors.

I agree Ellington will be a stud all over the field. He can put up some numbers given the chance!

Just my .02.

I'd really, really like to see Ellington on the field, catching passes from Kap !!! Having him out there with Gabbert is a waste of time and as we saw earlier today, could get him killed .
Things I noticed:

1. Seymour was a WALL at RG, albeit going against 2s and 3s, he was AWESOME.

2. Jonathan Martin and Looney were 100 miles ahead of last week's performance.

3. Carrier is better at run blocking then I thought.

4. Ellington is a ma'f'in badass! I loved what I saw from him, although Gabbert tried to kill him with high passes over the middle.

5. Holy progressions Batman! Kap showed two HUGE improvements today, one being going through his progressions, the other being that he threw to his check downs.

6. Borland is TERRIBLE in play action and reading proper coverage assignments in pass coverage...but IMO lightyears ahead of Wilhoite in making plays. Wilhoite reminds me of Derek Smith in that he makes tackles but they ALWAYS seem to be 3-5 yards past the LOS.

7. Our backup QBs are stunting the growth of the rest of the offensive players with their inaccuracies and poor decision making. I have no idea what options are out there in terms of backups, but neither Gabbert nor Johnson looks as if they want the backup job with their facing terrible performances. I know that Gabbert is making 2 mil, but if Kap goes down, this season is facked.

Very nice breakdown. Agree 100%.

The only 2 things i liked about todays outing was:

1.The play of Bruce Ellington this kid is a gem, he is impressive in every aspect of the game. This kid has a very bright future ahead of him.

2.Besides the Bethea injury our boys came out this game in one piece.

There definitely wasn't much to like, but Kap going through his reads before checking down to Miller was a good sign. Also liked Acker's play late in the game.

Sounds like Bill Romanowski. Always chasing the play instead of stuffing it at the LOS.

Gabbert isn't worth a pack of gum let alone a sixth round pick. Hopefully he's released.

McCray played better than Dahl. Hope he makes the roster over Dahl
Players who stood out to me:

1. Bruce Ellington, WR
2. Kenneth Acker, CB
3. Quinton Dial, DL (again)
4. Ryan Seymour, OL (did quite well, I think he's very close to winning a roster spot, if he hasn't already)
5. Vance McDonald, TE (interested in seeing what he'll do in the regular season)
6. Daryl Morris, CB

On the Wilhoite vs. Borland battle, it seems like the only thing Borland lacks is the mental aspect right now. Once he gets that, he will quite easily be the better player at the ILB spot. As much as I like Wilhoite's experience and athleticism, he simply isn't as strong of a pass rusher, is average in run support, and overall just not powerful a hitter.

I just don't think that Wilhoite sees the game. Borland is instinctual...almost to a fault. Wilhoite is slow to react and no amount of athleticism is going to make up for lack of anticipation in short area tackles, or in other words, exactly what an ILB is supposed to do.

I like Borland because he seems to be a smart player, but he is biting on the ILB version of a WR double move, in that he jumps on the first thing he sees instead of dissecting the plays. That will come with time and long term, he seems to be the answer as a backup for Willis and Bowman.

The 49er "1st string" defense was calling some complex coverages and it showed with a few blown assignments against Manning. These busted coverages were pointed out in the telecast. Two notable ones are the DThomas catch and run on a short crossing route and the JThomas TD catch. Fangio and Donatell have some good material (video) to help teach with.

Daniel Jeremiah @MoveTheSticks

In college, Chris Borland was an excellent blitzer but he struggled in coverage. That's going to be his biggest challenge.
Kenneth Acker was awesome
