Everyone else, I worry will get burned or exposed as the weak link on our pass d and I just don't want to hold my breath everytime a qb throws a deep pass against us like we had to for so many years until recently.
I still don't forgive Brock for the td on 3rd and 14 in the nfcc
I still don't forgive cully for the td given up in the sb
I still don't forgive Rogers for the td given up on fourth down in the nfcc
We need a very good cb that can be consistent. I hope it's reaser or whoever. I don't care. Bc a big play could mean the difference between sb #6.
You won't find a corner who has never given up a TD pass.
I agree but my point is they are not consistent. Any during crucial times for that matter. Unlike a Sherman vontae Davis Revis or even a top 5-10 cb, we get burned at the worst times during the playoffs and don't want wright or d Johnson or whoever to burn us yet again.

Gonna need a fierce pass rush to cover this cast of misfits.

bet he unseats dahl, and then we are set for the future. if ward can come on as a safety, we are more than fine there

I disagree I think Tartt will be a surprise this season in Nickel and Dime situations, he hits hard with good range I can't wait to see him play.

True. We should give them a chance but it won't be fun watching our DBS get beat.
Hope a cb can emerge as a good to great one. The good news is Dahl will be gone soon and we can save a mil or so

Generally in anything, i would take quality over quantity...except this yr at CB/S/DB, which means i lean toward the hybridization of our DBs. Thinking back to last yr, there were any number of times i wish we would have had 4 good cover guys in back. Call them DBs, CBs, SS, S,. they were cover guys we needed, and a couple big ones at that. That is where i hope we are this yr, great cover guys, in the NFL ....the passing league. Somehow, even tho several of these guys i have not seen, i get the feeling Trent has set us up to have DBs, not CBs nor Ss,. Also LBs that can cover, and we have a couple, will help out. The biggest and best hope, however, is Mangini's blitzing defense, which is twice as often (by hx) than was Fangios....and man did i ever wish we blitzed about twice as much as fangio did last yr. Well 2x as many blitzes is just about mangini's blitz record.. So altho i know zilch for sure, i am very hopeful that this D backfield excels this yr, and made all the better by mangini's doubling the number of blitzes.

not sure yet if he's got Ed Reid's range, but when I saw him play against TCU, he reminded most of Sean!!
no way Tartt takes over any Safety position this year..unless our guys get hurt...maybe next year if Bethea leaves
With the NFL's emphasis on coverage over hitting I don't see Tartt taking over FS...unless, as you say, there are continued injuries. But the great thing about the DBs is flexibility. Many of the guys can play anywhere so the coaches can really disguise coverages better.
The"excessive" hitting penalties lessen Tart's impact. It will still matter But not like the old days when Ronnie would explode guys.
Depends how well Tartt can cover. IMO, he'll be tested against Jimmy Graham and we'll see what we have.
Not sure this is true of Tartt. I've watched some video on him and it looks like he hits hard within the rules, rather than being a head hunter. We'll see but I think he will avoid penalties much better than Goldson and Whitner did...while having a similar impact. Kind of reminds me of the pure tackling style of Willis.

Agree! Really don't get caught up in positions rather than talents or traits. If they have to put four safeties in? Fine! If they need five CBs? Fine. And I also love the versatility of these guys.

Agree.
Bethea was an excellent pick up last season.
How did his replacement play last season??

Ward, Brock, Reid and Bethea...maybe Johnson. We're only replacing Culliver from a top 5 secondary and #1 in TOs. Brock is better than Cox. Nice troll though.

Tartt will replace Bowman or Wilhoite, not Bethea. But he'll be learning that position as well. Hybrid ILB/SS.

This is one competition where every play made in pre sesson can decide who will start. Gonna be interesting to see how the reps are broken up and who they consider the top cbs going into 1st pre season game.

I totally agree. I'll be watching this unit very closely as well as the OL. That said, it does sound like Mangini is big on personnel matchups so we could realistically see different 'starters' from game-to-game depending on who we face. We do have the experienced players, versatility, speed, range, size, physicality, etc. And like the DL, we'll probably use the players to their strengths vs. one player that excels in all areas.

I'd bet the CB situation isn't as bad as some people seem to think. There's lots of speed and size in this group. The shortest guy in contention is Brock, who has already proven himself to be a good corner. But then you've got tremendous closing speed with Reaser (6ft.), great size and good speed with Dontae Johnson (6-2), real good speed and size with Acker (6ft), and real good size with decent speed in Chris Cook. Plus, I'm hoping Wright is going to be another one of those guys like Rodgers who excels in this system with this coaching.
We'll see, but corner might be a nice pleasant surprise for Niner fans this year.
