I have been in Borlands corner on his decision, BUT if he truly knew he was only going to play one season and failed to let the staff know as soon as his decision was made, I find that a bit low class. It likely means he only had plans to play one season prior to being Drafted. Prior to signing his rookie contract.

Also, this is my first post in this thread since his announcment, But Borland did not retire from football. He quit football. You don't get to Retire after one year in the NFL.

The worst part, is he likely quit before he entered the draft.

I just cant figure out how he did so well as a rookie who is afraid of the game, and already knows he is going to quit after the season.

Imagine what this kid could have been if he was 100% committed to the game. Its his choice, but its a damn shame. He is running away from what he was born to do.

Regardless, it does piss me off that he likely knew before hand and was just using the one year in the NFL as a financial spring board. Also makes me wonder how long he would have milked the contract if he wasn't forced into heavy playing time as a rookie. Would he have stuck around a couple more years milking the contract before he called it quits?

The more i think about it- f**k Chris Borland!

If there is a decent chance I couldn't walk without pain at 50 or might lose my mind at 60 due to my work I think I would find another line of work no matter how much the job paid but I say this as a person in their 40s, at 25 I would have probably felt differently because life at 50 and 60 weren't something I placed much value on. I respect the guy for making the effort to come to an informed decision even if it was a year after he decided to enter the draft.
The guy has a right to change his mind just like NFL teams have the right to kick guys to the curb whenever they choose and if the CBA entitles the 49ers to get a portion of the signing bonus back I wouldn't begrudge them for doing so.

Hey Chris, it's not all about you. A gm drafted you in the 3rd round foregoing drafting other guys or using that pick to trade up in other rounds. Coaches put a lot of collateral into you and Willis taught you how to play. That is a lot of effort wasted. Fans put a lot of faith in you.

Perhaps you should have had the courage to not declare for the draft and not be a selfish pos.

this. if this p***y didnt want to play football because it was dangerous, he should have stopped years ago. dude wasted the teams time, draft pick and money.

people quit jobs everyday

Not jobs where your starting pay is six figures and a job where you can retire after working 10 years. Personally I think he's a p***y, as a vet my job in the service was waaaaay more risky health wise than a concussion, could've died many times during deployment. Not to mention cops, firefighters etc.. that get paid beans compared to football players who plays a game for a living and a million dollar living at that. I don't know anybody who wouldn't love being in his shoes with that opportunity.

People quit 6 figure jobs all the time. Doctors who decide they don't want to be a doctor, lawyers who don't want to be in law, Wall Street guys who say f**k Wall Street ....

It happens.

P Willy just walked away from almost $10 million next year, guaranteed. Borland is walking away from 1/30th that.

Even Jordan quit the game once as well.

Not after one year. He'll realize that the potential of getting hurt or long term injury is just as risky by just driving to work everyday in a 9-5 job for paycheck to paycheck living money like most of us for 30-40 years to really retire. One year is not retirement. He don't deserve that label. He's a quitting p***y who quit on his teammates, fans and the 49ers when they needed him most

why is it so hard to understands that he rank his health, family >>>> $500k, fans, 49ers ?

he prefers to work 40+ years to retire and not risk his health vs lots of money and risking his health.

Over 50 % of NFL players overall have filed for bankruptcy or are in serious financial stress by the time they are 50 years old

And since when is there a 30% chance that we acquire dementia/alzheimers/depression from driving to work?

If he really was doing research then he would of kept playing. There are around 3000 in NFL players per year (including training camp). So 3000 times 50, so 150,000 football players, out of that 63 confirmed cases of brain damage. Ok so is that .042% chance worth 500k a year?

Doesn't that math assume that there are 3000 new players each season?

Ya, I'm glad solidg doesn't have Paraag Marathe's job. Perhaps you should do as much research as Borland did.

It's fine that he values his health/family more than work, so do I. It's the way he did it and the time he did it that is frustrating. That 50 percent bankruptcy crap is ALL on the players themselves and they have nobody to blame but themselves, most of them made more during their football careers then we will in our lifetime. I don't know what point you're trying to make there. As far as dimensia/alzheimers and depression, anybody can get that with age regardless of occupation. My point with the driving is there's risk with that too, especially if you do it for 40 years everyday as opposed to driving to work for a few months a year for 10 years if football is your job. Health concerns because of your occupation is something almost everyone with jobs deals with because most things in life have risks, so for me it's a weak ass excuse for quitting and again I'll say p***y

Regardless it doesn't matter because that number is a lot higher! How many people play college, high school, try out for NFL, etc
