Agreed. The secondary will be average to good relaying the front 7 to make them look very good. But that doesn't mean we can downplay Brown's contributions to the team. He's a good cover corner. Don't mean to get into it with you NinerBuff, just saw some posters' responses that paraphrase as "his absence won't hurt".

If the 49ers' offense is as badass as I think it will be, opposing teams may be lining up in 4WR sets in the middle of the 3rd quarter playing catch up. This puts stress on the pass rushing depth (got that) and secondary depth. Not having Brown would definitely hurt the team. We don't know how good Nnamdi is. Will CRogers regress more? For the most part, a rookie FS will be behind the right CB. He is important to this year's secondary.

I expect he will sue his agent after this.

Let's not pretend like Brown is a nobody now. He's still the best, if not second best behind Cully, cover corner (jury is out on Nnamdi). If things went differently, he'd be a hero for his forced fumble on Rice. He is important to the success of this defense in 13-14. He's not someone you just say "oh F him then, we don't need him".

Somewhat true, but we still need at least above average DB's.
Seriously!! WTF!! C'mon man!! Can't let your kinfolk direct your finances. MC Hammer could have done a better job than this

Wonder if this leads to a reasonable contract extension with Brown trying to get some of that money back this season

You're not serious are you? He really didn't know? That can't be right.

This isn't good news. Brown is probably going nuts about losing that money. He is obviously not happy about it, and it's going to weigh on his mind during the season. You want your players happy. You don't want them to think that you got one over on them.

If it is indeed a fact that Brown unwittingly lost out on his $2 million, would it not have been in good faith for the team to have at least called him and reminded him that he had this escalater clause in his contract?

I think that it shows poor class on the team's part to have remained silent and have not at least put him on notice. That's just cheap; they're supposed to be a family . . . a team. You don't build good team chemistry acting like that.
