A lot has been made about our defense either regressing or having lapses, especially against the run. As most of you should know by now, having a great run defense is great and all, because you know the other team is passing. However, even if you know the other team is passing, if you are playing a great passing team like new England saints green bay or nyg they still can pass against you and win by not even attempting to run.
Look at last year, nyg and saints didn't even bother to run much at all against us and did well. Point being.......it's better to be good against the pass than the run. We will be better suited to beat gh nyg or whatever team we play in the playoffs because of our very improved secondary play, even if our pass rush and turnovers are not there. We are still a better overall defense than last year bc we can stop the other teams from passing on us and ultimately winning because of this.
So, please relax with all this defense has regressed talk, or our run defense isn't the best now. Well I'd rather have a top 10 run d and a top 3 pass d and overall d than a first place run d and an above average pass d that causes us to lose in the playoffs to a good qb and offense. Trust me, this is better in the long run if we are going to have to beat the packers giants cowboys bears and ultimately new England or Houston in the playoffs.
What are your thoughts on this?

In a passing league, our Defense is more suited to win now

we aren't good against the pass. the only reason we are rated highly is because we've played some of the worst passing teams in the league.... the seahawks, the jets, etc.
our CB's have been routinely beaten. the bills left 2 or 3 easy passing TD's off the board because of s**tty QB play. it has been like this in a lot of games. our pass defense isn't good because our pass rush isn't good. the defense has looked like s**t compared to last years defense. that doesn't mean we are a horrible defense but we just aren't as good as last year and i dont care what our passing stats say. you only need to watch one game with our complete lack of pass rush and turnovers to know that

more like suited to get toasted. Rogers is getting scraped while our LB's are not goodon the coverage. Aldon is always toasted and our middle LB's are just not adjusted to that type of coverage. Our secondary is just about average and with Culliver a little banged up probably worst thant that.

Hello???? We went against Aaron Rodgers stafford Eli manning when he was good fitz was leading the league in tds before he faced us......all had bad games against us so you are dead wrong. Our pass d is a lot better this year.

Misleading.
We rarely get beat on deep balls. We do get beat on short-mid range passes. I think Fangio's strategy is not giving up deep throws.
I know some of you will say what about last week w/Amendola. HOW MANY people have beaten our secondary on deep balls. That's the stat you should look at.
That said, we still need to get better in our secondary.

The correlation between the defense and offense being successful is bigger than one would think. Our offense needs to sustain drives and keep the defense on the sideline. Greg Roman needs to script better opening drives. That's not to say our defense wasn't to blame vs the rams because they were well rested to start the game and gave up scores early. Once we put a good drive together our defense did pretty well but the Rams got us on some fake punts. We could not put any long drives together and our defense was on the field way too often. So if the offense is doing their job later in games the defense will benefit from it.

If we were forced to pass 55 times or more , I'm sure we would put up big numbers in the passing game too ....going into a game with a 80% pass / 20% run gameplan is a big risk , you might put up 400 + yards passing , but it makes you a desperate and one dimensional offense

The secondary played very well against GB and Detroit. They actually played well in our non-win games also, but the opposing QBs were deadly accurate. Plus Amendola is arguably the best WR in the league.
If Calvin Johnson would have torched us, you would have said 'Hes megatron, thats expected'. Well, Amendola > Megatron as of right now.
Last year our DB's had an unsustainable amount of turnovers. That is a huge difference also.

Our defense is definately different then last years, maybe a little worse. I think the NFL has adapted to us. They are double teaming J.Smith every play so that means there are some one-on-one match-ups we are simply NOT winning---no one else has stepped up. There is almost two years of film out there now. Fangio has a plan, on the macroscopic level. He isnt going to change his scheme in the middle of the season. He also doesn't over react on game day and sometimes this is frustrating becuase he won't dial up the blitz, or double anyone in particular. My only complaint is that department is that he needs to consider a change with Rogers in the slot corner. He doesn't match up well against the proto-typical slot WRs--case in point Danny Amendola and Victor Cruz. But hey, they are great players that everyone has issues with. I do think he could take away the obvious thing the offenses are doing to us WHEN ITS THE 3Rd QTR AND YOU ARE LOSING (who else do the RAMS got besides AMENDOLA? Nobody! I don't care if you have to triple him, TAKE HIM OUT OF THE GAME!) I noticed that we don't do well with the small shifty WRs and we do great against bigger stronger type WRS (generally). We also seem to handle small fast RBs pretty good like the Spillers, Sproles, Reggie Bushes but not so well against big strong powerful RBs like Peterson, Jackson, and Lynch. Its a give and a take.
Fangio has a scheme in place and it is built to stop the NE, GB, NO, DET type of offenses. Passing teams with great QBs. No defense matches up with all the other 31 teams offenses, but you have to play the statistics. You have to hang your hat on something. Once a defense "takes something away" they also "give something up" and that is just football. We can handle anyone in our division, not necessarily every player on every down.

Yes, and good examples. I have had many issues with our DBs over the past two years but they are playing better this year than last, and overall I think it's a strong unit. The Dallas game last year was so aggravating! Grrr!

I think the only thing we can do extra on defense is bring back the big play element that we had last season and play more disciplined football (read Dashon Goldson) This means turnovers and sacks. And not getting unsportsmanlike conduct penalties allowing opposing teams to sustain drives. Perhaps a little more blitzing and subbing guys on the defensive line more.
