OLB wasn't the deepest position because of the injuries Johnson and Fleming, and so they will be right on top of the waiver wire, same thing with OT methinks..

I think they are thinking Dobbs can play there in an emergency. He plays DL, OLB, FB, Special Teams. Dobbs flexibility allowed us to keep 3 OLB's (something I still think may be a mistake). You want about 4 I'd say.

considering we drafted 2.....I cant see us sticking with 3

do we even have any on the PS just in case something happens to our 3 OLBs?

PS isnt ready yet but I assume Cam is/will be on there
PS is established tomorrow I believe

Even if we go with 3 if something happens I am sure guys like Ilama Francis, Kenny Rowe, Bakhtiari, etc would still be available throughout the season.

I see us picking someone off waivers/trade and dropping Brock.
We will keep 5 CB's regardless if Brock stays or not.

Celek will go once Dobbs is healthy so thats 1 guy we can add. Then I expect one FS to go so we can add a better option at OT.

Dobbs played the DE in nickel situations when Aldon went down. Maybe Gooden could fill in as well in a pinch.

That is my concern as well. With the development of this league into a passing league (except for SF), you can't put too much pressure on the QB. From my perspective, I didn't see anyone of the 1st or 2nd teamers putting pressure on the QB during the PS. Hence, I am not surprised they didn't keep any others. I fully expect them to go shopping for a pass rusher among the cuts, if there are any to be had. Every team in the league is looking for a rusher so I am not terribly optimistic. Perhaps Johnson will get healthy and get the call.

Expect the 49ers to make a move up next year to draft one.

little worried about just three backers and two of them are nicked up but oh well.. ok gotta say i was wrong wrong wrong wrong about rock. i supposedly "knew" they signed him to take dixons place and i supposedly "knew" he would make it, dixon would get cut. I was dead wrong and i have no problem with it. Not the first time , will not be the last time. I was hoping dixon took the jacobs and rock signing as a kick in the ass. A few months ago i just thought he was the same old dixon but once pre season rolled around he earned it big time. His youth is a plus compared to rock, I hope and trust and think he will be a great special teams,, maybe he will even be named captain. so I just wanted to step up to posters like afrikan and others .I ran my mouth about rock, while lots of you correctly said dixon makes the team,, my hat is off to you and to dixon. .... mmmm i was ok with the erickson hire, i was ok giving him another year, i was ok with the nolan hire.... i have been wrong lots of times!

RE: Celek.

One of the things the 49ers have missed ever since Eric Johnson left was a TE that could read defenses and make quick adjustments to be available on blitzes, find soft spots in the zone and outrun a linebacker. VD, as dangerous as he is on deep routes, has not been able to develop into the Jason Whitten-type TE. While I didn't see Celek a lot, I did see him finding those zones and making good route adjustments. He has the size and the bulk to be a good blocker along with the rest of the package to be that "safety valve" TE that the offense has been missing. I don't believe Dobbs has that same pass catching ability although he is a good blocker. Celek brings something to the party no one else has...at least in my view.

I'd say 4th OLB, 5th CB... ILB if we lose Grant or Gooden in FA (although Wilhoite could make a case) Maybe 3rd TE or if we lose Walker in FA than we need someone..... NT I think we will be ok if we re-sign RJF or Sopoaga. Ian will be backup. DE... I really wonder what we have in Tukuafu and Dobbs... I think Justin and Ray will be fine for at least 3-4 more years if we can re-sign Justin (not sure I worry about Justin's replacement yet although you can always upgrade depth)

I'm also thinking WR could be the case but only if we lose Moss and Ginn. Otherwise we should be fine with 5-6 solid guys again. If both those guys are gone then we have Crabtree, Manningham, Jenkins, Williams and would need one more (maybe Owusu/Palmer/draft pick).

3rd Tackle is a must.... Definitely a FS if Goldson doesn't re-sign... maybe center if they don't think Kilgore is the future... then safety depth.

So even though we really don't need too much you can always make upgrade your depth. I'm already looking forward to the draft but thats a long ways away.

Last year we went with Peelle who caught 1 ball but was targeted 3-5 times all year. He did a great job blocking though. Makes me think Dobbs could block and they don't necessarily want a receiving threat at 3rd TE (Dobbs isn't a receiver, he would be purely blocker). If they decided they want a guy who can block but also be a threat once in awhile than Celek would work. I liked Reuland because he might not be the best blocker but he poses a good safety blanket and a legit threat. I think our offense needs as much help as it can get. Who knows though, Celek if he sticks around could turn into a better receiver.

Forgot OT but yes its a must

OLB-Parys is gone and we don't know what we have in Cam or Flemming
CB-Battle with Brock for the 5th spot
OT-time to look for the next Boone so he doesn't have to move.....musical chairs on the OL is stupid
DE-time to look for the next J Smith
NT-Ice or RJF will be gone....time to look for a dominant guy
TE-Dobbs is not a TE anyway you cut it...I want a 6-5 monster with hands and decent speed
ILB-Grant and Bowman could be gone...even if Bowman stays we need a viable backup
WR-....if Moss sucks and depending on Crabs
PR/KR (WR-CB)-Ginn should be gone so lets figure this s**t out already

The DE and NT positions are loaded this year, we should be able to find 2 monsters in the draft

IMO, there were a lot of peeps who got carried away with the whole Stanford/Harbaugh/Reuland story. Reuland had a full year to get stronger and bigger but apparently didn't get it done. In the end, Celek is a more complete package in a more traditional mold of a TE. Walker is more WR than TE and VD is not at all the typical TE. Celek completes the mix. The 49ers did not need another TE whose greatest skill was catching passes. They do need a more all-around guy who can run the basic routes to present a quick, open target in the face of early QB pressure. That is what I see in Celek.

Looks good. I have all years updated cap wise, we have $3.3M in cap room for 2013 right now, so that's a good thing, with potential for extending and lowering salaries of Justin Smith namely. Plus we need to look past 2013. Extensions at some point for the following, Iupati(deal after 2014), Bowman(2013), Whitner(2013), Akers(2013), A.Davis(2014), Justin(2013) and look at Brown(2013). Of course way way down the road, we gotta extend Aldon, but wont happen till 2014 offseason, due to new CBA rules.

To me, these guys currently on roster have real futures here.

QB- Kaepernick and Tolzien
RB- Hunter and James, possibly Dixon
FB- Miller
WR- Crabtree, Manningham, Jenkins and possibly Kyle Williams
TE- Vernon and Dobbs (Walker is, if he is re-signed)
OL- Staley, Iupati, Boone, A.Davis, Kilgore, Looney
DL- Justin, Ray Mac, Tukuafu, Ian, RJF(If signed) and Sopoaga(If signed)
LB- Willis, Bowman, Aldon and Brooks
CB- Carlos, Brown, Cully and Cox
S- Whitner, Spillman and Robinson
ST- Lee, Akers

Jennings will be done after 2014, getting up in age. Not sold on Goldson being future starter, needs to show it more than 1 season.

Fleming and Hampton could, if they get right chances. And whoever is on PS
The best asset about Celek is, that his girlfriend is smoking hot!
