Good job on the vid find. Far from an expert myself. Check out his back leg on his throw. Compared to 2009, there's more bend so he can push-off as he throws. And there's more swing movement to the leg at the end of his throw so there's counter balance all the way through the throwing movement of his arm. More lean on the throw too. Drop back footwork seems to be about the same to me.

Dont see a difference, lol
nah but for real, at 1:15 of the "Smith Ready to hit Full Throttle" video is where I REALLY notice a difference in his hitch step. Reminds me of Luck's

Thanks. This is what I'm talking about. I would have never noticed the back leg thing.

Great stuff. I think there is a noticeable difference this year. We'll see if it translate to real games. I just don't know if Alex will be able to undo all that muscle memory from the way he's been throwing the last few years.

I'm definitely no QB mechanics expert but it seems like Alex is really economizing his movements now. His release and all just looks cleaner. In previous years Id see him drop back and think that something just looked off...lots of extra movements and weird things. Now he looks more polished.
It makes me angry actually. Imagine if all of this was done in year 2. Anyway...it is what it is. Go Niners.
I'm sure JoeCool will be in here to chime in about Alexs mechanics still being flawed because every time he throws he puffs out his right cheek. :P

This is a great post. I think we'll have to see how well he has internalized all this in a live game. I noticed on the rollouts he still locks his knee out. He likely isn't thinking about it there and he's going to the familiar. He is clearly better in basic mechanics since 09. I also liked that this years film shows his throws start to finnish. Instead of the normal traning camp highlight which shows a QB under center throw a ball into thin air. Knowing the offense is going to help him focus on his mechanics more and making good throws. Ideally the pass protection will be better as well.
