Poll: Peyton or Alex?

With Manning our defense and special teams can go down a notch and we will still be a very good team. Our defense and special teams played lights out all year for us to go 13-3. The only game that the offense carried the defense was against the Saints, but if you look at what our defense did in that game ... caused 5 turnovers, shut the Saints down in the first half, knocked out their best RB ... the Saints would have put up 40+ on any other defense, IMO.

We play on a thin red line with Alex. Mistake free football is a must. You make an error - like we did against the Giants - and you lose. The margin of error gets wider with Manning. That's why he's the pick over Alex.

He almost got us there and we lost to the eventual winner on a special teams mistake that we typically did not commit all year.

Manning is obviously the better QB (if healthy) and if he can't win a superbowl with this team then neither can Alex, but he will be paid alot more than Alex. The question is if this team is good enough to win superbowls with Alex?

Manning will be history in a few years and the rest of this team will be in it's prime. What then? Maybe we have CK but he may be gone before he inherits the reins. What about young core guys we can't afford because of mannings contract (bowman, iupati, Aldon, etc)?

In 3 to 4 years if we have 1 or 2 superbowls in our pocket I don't care who our QB was. But our abilty to win even more superbowls from then on will be much greater if we did it with Smith due to the abitly to keep the remaining talent on our team.

So the question is, can Alex win super bowls with this current team? The answer seems obvious since he almost did it this year and the team had no time to learn under the new coaches.
No.

- NFC is tougher than ever before
- We had a dome team @ home & NFC title game @ home & couldn't close the deal. It is fair to predict how Smith/the offense would have performed on the road. Imagine if Packers defeat the Giants, we would have been playing in the cold @ GB
- We had no significant injuries on defense & that is mathematically very unlikely to happen again
- Our main weapons on offense (#1 RB, WR & TE) were healthy

With Smith I feel we are on par with Saints (bad defense), Patriots (bad defense), Eagles, Lions, & prob Steelers/Texans but do not match up well against Packers or Ravens. With Manning I think you have to put us even & probably above GB/Baltimore
I like and agree with your summary of who we match up with and agree with the points at the top. But we also played alot more playoff teams last year than we thought we would at the beginning of the year and had alot of insurmountable disadvantages (lockout, travel schedule etc) that we overcame. If we made the playoffs and by winnign only 9 or 10 games then I would fully agree with you.

Mostly I think the whole team will be better (including alex) after a full offseason that we won't need manning and that would put us in much better postion to find our franchise qb. One more thing, the one person I can eliminate from being our franchise QB is manning, he will be done in 4 years.

He doesn't need to be the QB of the future (Manning). He is there to teach Kaep because you think Boy wonder (Smith) can really educate him?

Damn, too many replies for me to keep up. Yes we do have to play "mistake free" football but we can because of how much better the rest of the team is. Mine is a bigger picture argument, manning would provide us with a bigger margin of error and, as I said in my original post, he would be better than alex for the next few years. But there is a reason that the colts, packers, saints, and patriots D sucks (affordbly/salary cap). But as alot of people have stated, it doesn't matter because thay have the elite QBs in the league to make up for it. But for us, assuming that manning is actually healthy, we will only have him for a few years. All these other teams have/had 15 years with their elite QB. It seems short-sighted.
However, this also puts the 49ers in quite a pickle.

If Manning decides he does not want to sign with the 49ers, then the team has a disgruntled Smith who probably does not want to return to the team, given the reports about him switching agents. That would leave San Francisco hung out to dry with Colin Kaepernick under center next season. It was quite a risk for the 49ers to workout Manning with the type of backlash they inevitably could have received from Smith.

The problem is, half the fan base considers Smith more of a high school one night stand that they got pregnant and were forced to marry.

Entitled AND disloyal.

Smith = High School Sweetheart?

Man that is the reach of the decade.
I'm sorry, but 5 years and $90 Million for Peyton Manning is just plain stupid. I can't believe the Broncos would offer him that. What about the rest of their roster? How long due you ride the Peyton Manning wave? 2-3 years max? Maybe 2-3 months if he takes a few good licks.

Boy wonder? Damn when did I ever say that, stop taking this as an alexcuse, i'm talking about the whole team? Harbaugh will provide the QB training for Kaep and in reality manning will only hinder his development, he has no loyalty to the orginization and had no intereste in helping his previous backups.

If your concern is Kaep then you should want Alex, we could finincially dump alex at any time for Kaep and the team that kaep would take over would be more talented with a better salary cap situation.

Right. Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't he lead us to the NFC Championship game including 6 comeback victories with a shortened off-season which included "Camp Alex"? He deserves another year under Jim Harbaugh after 6 putrid offensive systems. I mean come on guys, Alex Smith is the stuff movies are made out of. He stuck it out and rewarded the fanbase. We owe it to the guy for allowing the Yorks to derail his career. What he has done just does not happen in the NFL. Idk, I just thought traits like perseverance were supposed to be rewarded.
You put Alex Smith on another team that has a bad defense or a so so defense, and that team will not win 8 games.....
