OL - swapping positions

The only move I could see is MAYBE moving Anthony Davis to RG and moving Boone to RT.

I don't think that'll happen tho.
I actually think your take on the OL is wrong in some areas.

1: Staley Is a good pass blocker, just seems like he gives up a sack every other game. He's an average run blocker.

2: Agree with your take on Iupati.

3: Jonathan Goodwin is a really good pass blocker, average run blocker.

4: Snyder is a average pass blocker and a average run blocker, he loses his blocker at times.

5: Agree with your take on Davis but I also think hes still improving on all aspects of his game, still inconsistent.

Don't agree with piling our strong run blockers to the right while lacking on the left side. Unless you mean only during run plays but even then it would make it more predictable for defenses. Maybe mix it up a little by alternating linemen around on run plays just to confuse defenders.

Moving Davis to LT isnt exactly a good idea unless he shows some big improvement in his consistency. Hypothetically, if he did out perform Staley this might be a good idea but maybe move Staley to guard and keep Davis at RT and use Boone as our LT. Just my thoughts, Love the post, its not talked about very much

I agree it is unlikely to see the young guys playing on the same side unless they are grooming Boone to take RT and move Davis to LT when and if Staley's back gives him more trouble. They have Kilgore and Person to play interior positions and one of them may be the RG next year. If they aren't ready a FA RG is in order.

The problem with pairing Davis with Iupati is that they are both young. By next year that may not be a problem but look at how much better Davis plays with Snyder next to him.
I don't want to see massive changes this year, but next offseason, I'd love to quickly install Boone at RT and Davis inside at RG.

Staley - 75% good pass pro.. average a best run blocker, but damn, can he pull outside well.
Iupati - above average in both pass and pro, but really needs work on zone-block awareness.
Goodwin - heavy feet in pass pro, lack of power in run blocks and anchoring (we can do worse though)
Davis - mauler in run blocks, should do well in pass pro, since he's not in space
Boone - mauler in run blocks, should prove better in space on this side. (could struggle against the fastest)

Davis has very quick feet and will become an outstanding pass blocker as well. He has got to stay at tackle. Maybe move Boone to Guard
You want your best pass blockers on the QBs blind side. Right handed QB you would want the pass blockers on the left side and for a left handed passer you would want your best pass blockers on the right side.
Davis played LT in college and if that is his natural position it would be nice to lock that down for years to come. Staley played well at RT. The old 49ers moved people around quite a bit to prepare for injuries. Guys like Cross could play OC or OG, and McIntyre played everywhere but OC, if memory serves me correctly. The good news is that with Staley, Iupati, Goodwin, Snyder, Davis, Boone, and Kigore the 9ers have a pretty strong group of young linemen. If they can get Rachal and Person playing well it will be a deep unit. My biggest concern has been the rush straight up the middle but that is a case of missed assignments not lack of mobility.

That would be a cool experiment but probably too soon for AD. Usually that's a last ditch effort. Still with our jumbo packages Boon gets a ton of playing time already and if we did that we would need another (3rd) tackle.
I think we are also just building depth. We are going to need more than 5 guys to make this offense work the way we have been setting up blocking schemes.

Which brings up a good question, which of our OTs is the best pass blocker? (Assuming that they play LT, not RT or guard)
My goodness, how strange it is to read this dialogue. I don't have to think back very far, say oh, all last yr when our OL wasn't worth a plug nickel. We had staley and....well, that's all we had. Now we got guys we are actually grooming to start, but can come in and substitute the way of the SB yrs, as noted above. Just who is best where....jeez, i am glad we can suit up 5 really professional players when much of last 8 yrs we had only one decent OL guy. Now we conceivably have 6 with boone. As for C, you all don't recall the fits and starts we had with Heitmann, Baas, et all trying to snap ball and block, all at same time? C was a major league eyesore, as were 3 other OL positions. I just feel like i died and went to heaven when I see our Lt side pulling on a run Rt or vice versa. Sure, I don't like the missed blocks ,like during the Balt game, but that was blocking scheme, with two DL guys x rushing and our guys had just not seen that. Also, the ILB blitz, the CB and SS blitzes, were just never read and certainly never blocked on 9 separate sacks. There were alss 11 knock downs and 12 hurries. Only passes that got off were 1 steppers in the 2 minute drill. Unlike you guys, I am in love with our OL, but had to take a sick day on friday after ravens game. We are 500% better than last yr, but clever blitz and rushing schemes remain to be learned by the 9ers. Coach's brother did us a favor by beating us like a drum on the OL. It raised the flag of "no we don't have it down pat yet" and we need to work on a lot more. But overall, I love our guys...i never mentioned chilo here, but hope for a miracle. Honestly I think it is in his head. He sure had "it" at SC. Lost it somewhere under noln.
I like Boone and Kilgore because they have attitudes. Both have had to get to the NFL the hard way, not given a first round autopass. Davis has developed an attitude ever since someone grabbed his crotch in a pile. By next year I predict this line will be fine. I hope it can happen by the playoffs!
dtg, I refer you to the Texans and Saints games in preseason. Look at those again, then look at now...Wow. It doesn't seem like even the same team on OL. And I do agree, finding the right best guy to the right best place is important. More important however, is not putting 4 stiffs out there on OL like we have 7 of last 8 yrs. I remember protracted arguments over baas and heitmann, neither of whom could block(usually), vs now. Man , what a difference.
