as you guys have seen we have moved teh ball down the field as well as any other team in the nfl the only problem we have is puching it in the endzone

Last week, offensive coordinator Greg Roman said red-zone efficiency is usually the last piece that falls into place after installing a new offense.

so we havent really worked on our RZ offense yet

and now that we are reaching to the end of the playbook i expect roman and harbaugh to now institute RZ plays

i am very confident that come playoff time our offense will be strong too come playoff time

Like everyone in the Zone, I'm hoping sooner than later. We are seeing a better 49er team every week - excluding the Ravens game.

Your topic on the Red Zone Offense is a good one and I think we'll also see improvement there. Like many, I feel we are still playing our cards close to the vest and hiding some surprises. Still, it isn't like we're not trying to get a TD so we MUST get this fixed. Teams like the Packers and Saints can score very quickly and we'll need to get ahead of them if we are to win. Playing catch-up is not always 100% successful. We can beat both of them if we score more frequently in the red zone - if we can't then we'll lose.
Even when our offense wasn't good the last couple of years Alex has been good in the red zone. It seems like they don't want him throwing much down there
Coaches coach, and players gotta execute. They haven't done either, hence 35 FGs red zone or not. Roman sometimes is great but in the last two weeks he gets too cute. Like against the Rams, 3rd and goal, jumbo package and they run. No $hit! Tighter lanes? Duh. That should have been done on 2nd down. Not saying go four wide, but maybe, 1 wide 2 TE with an extra OL elegible or 3TE 1 wide, then motion to cause chaos and mismatches.
We just haven't felt a real need to be aggressive in the RZ... and 10-2 says the need to has been small.

When we play high power offenses, we'll take more risks. No worries here.

It is not about being agressive to me. Its about like how teams who played well during the drive suddenly change too much, like going into prevent defense. Like going to a 2 TE set is normal for the niners. Thus with a basic two back or even an extra TE in the backfield, thus the D has to be ready for the possibility of anything. The jumbo package had everyone boxed in and no WR, if the players don't execute then its done, but the other schemeing allows to soften the opponents scheme.
Fade route to Crabs and Kwill
Stop getting so cute in the redzone
I think (or should I say hope) that Braylon coming back will help open things up some. His size makes for a tough match up when in close. Whether he can be targeted or not, he will definitely draw some attention from the defense.
It seems like in prevous years we sucked at moving the ball down the field but actually had more success in the red zone. This year the team sucks in the red zone! It seems like Roman calls either three straight run or three straight pass plays. Not sure what the problem is but my wishful thinking is that they are saving more creative plays for the playoffs.

He said last piece to fall into place, not last piece to get worked on. The kind of means, to me, that the work on the redzone just as much as anybody else but the plays are becoming more efficient and effective as the playbook gets deeper and better understood.

It's close to what your saying but I think its a large misnomer to say this team hasn't worked on teh RZ at all, that would be straight negligence on the coaching staff for an NFL team. I promise, they were working on the redzone offense in the beginning of training camp and ever since.

Exactly. It seems like they get to the the red zone and then try some out of the box. Just throw a basic fade route.

Even basic fade routes require a nice touch on the throw, and I haven't seen that out of Alex yet. This isn't an Alex rant either. He's been great all season. You don't lead your team to a division title without playing great football -- and Alex has been great.

But -- he doesn't throw a lot of what I like to call "touch" passes. Joe Montana was one of the best I've ever seen at layering a pass into the hands of a wideout with tremendous timing and touch. He did it again and again and again. The best touch pass I've seen out of Smith this season was a nicely thrown fade to our rookie fullback that led to a TD in the Redskins game. But I don't see him do that often.

I still think the running game needs work in the red zone, and we need to target our tight ends a bit more than we do. We'll get there.
Even if Edwards is just a decoy, it helps loosen up the RZ.

they just need to stop calling dumb plays in the redzone like that dumb wildcat they tried to run
