Smith has a had decent seasons with Norv Turner and Jim Harbaugh grooming him. He just still needs to develop his deep ball and killer play mentality.

that s**t was his bread and butter man
The Guy wasn't a #1 pick for no reason. He will turn out to be a top 5 quarterback consistently. He won't have a brees statistical season but he will be a great one in his OWN way. Harbaugh is no dummy. He kept Smith for a reason.

I like Alex and have been rooting for him to succeed, though I have a feeling he's just a STOPGAP. He's played well at many points in this season. However every once in a while you see those same mistakes that have been holding him back his entire career. I'm not sure at this point even with all the Harbaugh magic in the world if he'll ever be able to be the player I think he could be. He's certainly done some incredible stuff though so what do I know.
I freakin love Alex Smith and yes I mean that in a homosexual kinda way
GREAT Interview!

my favorite part.

-Q: How dangerous do you think this team can be in the playoffs?

-SMITH: Good question, how am I going to word this? I think on offense, and I really mean this, we've only begun to scratch the surface of what we can do. Really only kind of toyed with what we can become and when we play well and kind of firing on all cylinders.

The defense is playing really well right now, special teams… I mean, we're playing as a team, playing good football across the board.

But I think on offense, we'll show it in spurts here and there, but really haven't really scratched it… for me, and I've said this before, that's the encouraging thing. That's the scary thing for all of us—we haven't really hit it yet.

-Q: Haven't really needed to.

-SMITH: Yeah, and have been winning games like that. Boy, wait until we really get going and get in a groove.

-Q: You mean cutting loose?

-SMITH: Yeah, both ways, just firing, attacking. Just attacking defenses. And we do it. But obviously, the first year, the long season, we're still just learning and still growing every week with each other. It's only the tip of the iceberg.

it sounds all fine and dandy, but we'll just have to wait until it happens on the field. We have seen alot of situations where we have had players running wide open. As well as alot of exotic runs, from various formations. So when it does all come together, it should look LOVELY!

the only weird thing is, how does this work against Alex regarding signing a new contract. I'm sure he is going to want to be here, but would the team use stats to drive down his asking price? Would it be smart for him to sign say, another 1 year contract and flourish in this system next year to help him get a really good contract?

I know he would be taking a chance on his part, but I think I'd sign a one year contract....put up insane #s, then negotiate on a true long term deal. He shouldn't worry too much about getting injured, because IMO our system and the way Jim coaches doesn't really put the QB in harms way. And if Alex indeed gets better in this offense, well then he would most likely getting rid of the ball quicker and avoiding hard hits.

Where in God's green earth is this coming from? Volek can't carry Alex's jock. That's a strong statement, but I have no qualms making it because it's true. Alex is a QB that is starter-worthy for any team in the NFL. Cannot say that for Volek, a guy who hasn't started a game since 2005 and has 10 career starts, the most being 8 in one season. C'mon now -- get outta here with that nonsense.

Typical thought process in this situation is offer a frontloaded 4-year extension. If the player excels in the first two years of it, you start negotiating a new deal in the third year. If they flounder, you start looking to cut ties or make a trade in year three, with all the major cap hit already having passed.

As stated by OTC and myself in a previous thread a 4ish* year deal should do the trick. We wont short change him but wont break the bank either, any player can have 1 really good year. If we see improvement next year (which I don't know why we wouldn't) the team will be open to giving him more money. Alex isn't an idiot and knows he still has to prove a lot to a lot of people. If he comes back next year and shows more growth and improvement he will be the starter until he gets injured or retires.

-SMITH: If someone's here every day and watches us and is watching the games, that's far different than the guy that I know that's never been here, just gets on TV and says something, has no idea of the situation, doesn't know the details of the situation and is just calling it from afar.

That type of stuff. Guys that have no business evaluating, ex-players that have no business evaluating the quarterback position, all of a sudden throwing their two cents in because their time's done

Alex starting to talk some indirect s**t about all the crappy "nfl experts" love it.

Still want to see more points on the board, and more kendall hunter, and anthony dixon. If braylon is sitting out to get fully healthy for the playoffs, let frank sit out 2 more games or something, he still looks slow and hurt imo.

Gore wont "sit" until we beat Pitt

after that his reps will probably be toned down a bit
Good interview and many positive comments. It's been obvious that the OLine is still inconsistent and the WRs are a work in slow progress. Until those issues are fixed the offense will not flourish. And with those areas fixed people will better be able to evaluate Smith as a QB.
