As a coach, yes he was terrible. But as a talent evaluator and recruiter, you would have to give him props.

name a talent evaluator who hits on 100% on his moves? go back and look at the roster he inherited when hired and look at the players he drafted that are a big part of this 5-1 team, then look at the FA's we acquired when he was here. i said the day nolan was fired that he had to go but i appreciated him upping the talent on this team.

This team was gutted during the Erickson tenure. There was no talent on the team. We dumped Garcia and Owens, had Ulbrich and Derek Smith on defense. Upgrading the talent would have happened regardless of who was in charge.

The breakout shows who is on the team currently, and which coaching/management team brought them to the 49ers. If you want to gauge Nolan's ability as a talent evaluator, you have to look at who is on the team currently AND who he missed on during his time as coach.

Funny. I remember the term "Nolan guy" used a lot. Seems like the coach himself divided his own locker room. There doesn't seem to be any "Harbaugh guys." Just "team guys." Harbaugh seems to have a talent for uniting the team. Nolan did just the opposite.

I never disagreed that Nolan was a TERRIBLE HC. However, when it comes to talent evaluation and recruiting, he has to be given credit for what he did for us.

Then threw him under the bus. I'll never forget Julian Peterson saying something was definately wrong with Alex out there and Nolan shooting back that Peterson was not a doctor. Nolan and Singletary (pushing aside other issues) are not tempermentally suited to be head coaches in the NFL.

The greatest challenge for the team in 2012 is dealing with the avalanche of free agents after this season is through. I have highlighted guys who are currently starting, or on the 46 man game roster. The list is lengthy:
Alex Boone
Ahmed Brooks
Braylon Edwards
Ted Ginn
Dashon Goldson
Josh Morgan
Moran Norris
Chilo Rachal
Carlos Rogers
Alex Smith
Reggie Smith
Adam Snyder

This doesn't even include Larry Grant, Blake Costanzo, and CJ Spillman, who are fixtures on the game day roster.

Players like Alex Smith, and Carlos Rogers are in line for a big payday, so making the cap work will be a grand challenge.

The bolded, I feel, are the most expendable (although you could add Boone and Snyder, but I think they'll be back because of the depth they bring). I hate to admit it, but unless Edwards lights it up, he probably won't come back. If he does light it up late in the season, he may look for a bigger payday elsewhere.

Obviously Chilo (terrible), Reggie (slow), and Norris (nothing left in the tank) won't and shouldn't come back.

Goldson may be easily replaced by a draft pick or FA.

Demarcus Dobbs is a beast of a player. I can't understand how that kid went undrafted. Did you see him destroy San Diego's offensive line during preseason? My Bolt lovin' brother certainly did. He's pegged him for future greatness. I can't disagree.

I agreed with Nolan's philosophy to "tear it all down" and start over. After all, that's exactly what Walsh did. He cut away the underperformers and drafted, molded and coached new talent. Nolan certainly does have an eye for NFL talent. The 49er roster is stocked with it. But as previous posters have mentioned, he can't coach. Do you see how bad and bland Miami's defense looks? I think Mike Nolan has just about coached his way out of the NFL.

But you've got to give him credit for one thing. He wasn't afraid to tear it down and start all over. Harbaugh didn't have to do that. He came to a team stocked with more talent than most of us realized. What's he has done, is what other coaches could not do, is bring that talent out at full force. The Niners are a tough, young team playing smart football.

Hey, what do you think of the success of the 49ers, and of Aldon Smith in particular? Havent seen you post much. And usually its pretty easy for fans to come here and talk up their team

I liked Nolan as a talent evaluator and one who was willing to trade and get people he wanted. I also liked that he was willing to trade and get draft picks, as many as possible. He did not coach them well so we stayed in a mediocre position. I think Singletary had Harbaugh's vision of a tough running oriented, tough defense, mistake free football team but again he did not know how to coach them and get the players there. Harbaugh has the vision, and the willingness to get the best coaches in to train and develop all of the telent, including special teams, and has got the talented players and the talented coaches and has put together the team that Nolan and Singletary tried and failed to do. So it has certainly been a process and I hope it goes all of the way.
