Wait. Other teams have backups? Blasphemy!

Obviously missing my point.

So you're saying the other teams didn't replace the people they let go, or their 4.0 YPC backup RB can't get the job done?

Perhaps you should clarify.

You act as if I want them to miss the playoffs. It's just being realistic. Gore and Boldin are ready to retire, Johnson isn't going to be the passing game savior... He's past his prime. Bowman is the best player in the league. You think we can replace him that easily? Smith is going to retire soon, Dorsey's out, Ray Mac probably going to be suspended, our secondary is shaky...

With the emphasis on PI calls this year, no pass rush, and a shaky secondary, it's very difficult to see this team make it to the playoffs, as much as you or I want them too.

Are you kidding?

Your ready to retire Boldin and Gore, and Smith is done as well?

Brah - the glass is probably always half empty in your eyes... No doubt the niners will hit some speed bumps because of the recent issues... but no way, Gore, Smith, and Boldin are finished.
Where would the local media be without the 9ers and harbaugh.

"Oh McDonald playing, 49ers have terrible standards"

If he didn't play

"Oh 49ers know something, they have poor standards for not cutting guy"

All 590 yards last year disagrees with you. A #1 WR fighting for playing time as a #3. Sounds like he's going to be our best player this year.

Since you obviously don't watch football you wouldn't have noticed that Johnson battled injuries in 2013
Put this in the McDonald thread but probably fit better in here:

People can take their high horse all they want but if we cut guys like Aldon 31 other teams would have been waiting to sign him. Every team's fans gets on their high horse when it's another team's player but then if it's their player it's usually ok. It's always been like that in sports, you don't cut stars unless they do something like murder someone even then there is leeway. Bubble guys get cut for the same thing that's just how it works. You can be the GM who takes boyscouts and you will be like the Jaguars, devoid of talent. Their GM was a stickler for that and look what that got them. Anyways, the media is at an all time high... they are out of control. Most of these writers are that little short weak guy who was never good at sports but loved it so he decided to write about it. This is how they get the athletes back for never being good enough to play past HS. Most of them are pretentious and it's a shame people eat their garbage up. I wish everyone could ignore some of these guys and they would just go away. Side note let's say McDonald is innocent it won't matter because most people already made up their minds and the damage is done. Just like the Kaepernick case, he should be suing left and right for libel. They really did a number on his rep with that story.

Really? So when Gore and Smith's contract expire at the end of this and next season, you think we should re-sign them? I can see keeping boldin for another year, but don't expect him to be very productive.

And now he's a number 3 receiver.

So because he's on a more talented team this year and battled injuries in 2013 he's past his prime?

Umm yes we should definitely Re-sign both. That's what's called a no-brainer.

Why would the bills release him? They only have one legit WR. Seems odd to me they'd let a #1 WR at only 28 yrs old go to another team.

You want to give a 32 yr old RB a new contract? And didn't we just get tank and dial to replace smith? Cowboy is 34 years old. How long do you expect him to play -- and at a high level?

It's statements like this that make me wonder who really posts here since this team got back to elite level.

Neither Gore nor Boldin have said they're ready to retire. They're on the other side of 30 but they're still productive in our system.
We don't have just 1 wide receiver (Johnson), we have several, and the corps is more talented than it was last year.
Bowman didn't retire either, he's hurt and will return at mid-season, just like Aldon Smith, and, Yes, I think they're talented enough to make a significant positive impact the first game they play.
You're right...Glen Dorsey unfortunately is out. Fortunately, we have Ian Williams back, a talented NT that's chomping at the bit to make up for lost time.
Reid and Ward are two young studs on the secondary that make me feel at least as good about the unit as I did last year.
Our pass rush didn't disappear; Aldon is coming back, Brooks is still here and if Lynch can keep his head on straight, he's gonna be a beast.

It's not about homerism or not being realistic, it's about not going along with The Sky Is Falling! mentality that the media loves to create in order to be dramatic.
In the end, you have your opinion and I have mine.
We have some issues, I get it. But every team in this league will deal with similar issues at some point during the season.

Question is-will these teams be talented enough, deep enough, mature enough, well coached enough to weather the storm? As far as the Niners go, I think the answer is Yes.
