This whole Smith issue is becoming an annoying battle between some sort of weird estrogen crowd and another crowd who want to see the 49ers QB succeed.
It reminds me of one game at Candlestick with this guy whining for an hour during the game about his grandmother to his friend until I turned around and said "did you come to knit too?"
I have Smith's back even if he fails. That said, I don't think he will. Many a QB took time, let alone with the kind of hell Smith has been forced to play under until now. Some may remember Young was atrocious with Tampa Bay before he came here, the team stunk.
I am done, you may go back to your knitting now.

as for this list, Sanchez done belong in that group. cam doesn't belong in his group. I know he is killing it right now, but so did Bradford in year one. people will figure him out and that offense and when they do, his numbers will drop.
we should all really say that alex is playing good right now. we should not anoint or condemn until all 16+ games are played.
remembe how people were calling t smith the baller we all wanted? remember when JT was the answer? f**k a list until more is known.
So Cam doesnt belong in the group after what might the best first 5 game stretch by a rookie QB in the history of the NFL, but Alex belongs in that category after 6 years of garbage and 5 games of good football?
Hypocritical to say the least.

Somewhere, some year, some few games, he had to be great or show that spark. We never really saw anything close to consistency.
This year, in 5 games, he has certainly played well...his stats prove it. It's a long season, so the only thing to do is wait and watch.
yes and in his whole tenure here he hasn't had a coach who can not only teach him the position but couldn't come up with a competent gameplan
thats the man difference

Tom Brady
Aaron Rodgers

Healthy Peyton Manning
Eli Manning
Matt Schaub
Matt Ryan.
Much shorter than when the season started.
Eli Manning... are you serious?

What category did you have him in before the season started?
pure crap
Yes this
My opinion of him has changed. He's made it into that middle tier of QBs. JH has really helped him by limiting his f**k ups.

Eli Manning and Matt Ryan don't belong to the list this year. Schaub is in danger of dropping off, IMO.

Manning is a winner. The guy knows how to win big games and was on fire this year up until this weekend vs Seattle.

Second-tier: These guys are somewhat inconsistent, but have essentially proven enough to earn lifetime tenure. Of course, they both have rings too.
Eli Manning
Ben Roethlisberger
Up-and-comers: This is the next generation of guys who could still go either way. Their teams all believe they may be the long-term answer. I'll list them approximately by rank.
Phillip Rivers
Matt Stafford
Cam Newton
Matt Ryan
Alex Smith
Sam Bradford
Joe Flacco
Ryan Fitzpatrick
Josh Freeman
Jay Cutler
Mark Sanchez
Gunslingers: These guys are firmly entrenched starters who are talented. They put up numbers, but their "it" factor and clutchness are in doubt, IMHO.
Tony Romo
Matt Shaub
Perpetually mediocre: They aren't exactly in QB controversies, but fans of these teams can't feel thrilled about the signal-caller position.
Matt Cassell
Jason Campbell
Kevin Kolb
Chad Henne
I, like many people, wanted nothing more than to sever ties with Alex Smith and move on before the season. Now that I've done a 180 on that, I must admit it's still possible this is fool's gold and he will somehow start to suck again. As of right now, however, I feel pretty good about him as a long-term solution. I'd rather have him than Romo or Shaub or probably Vick. In the up-and-comer tier, I'd put him below the first three and right in the mix with Ryan and Bradford. I think we can build a winner around him, and we appear to be well on our way.
Phillip Rivers is a up & comer w/
64.0% completion, 21,978 yds, 142 TDs, 65 INTs, 95.6 RTG? You know he made 3 pro bowls, and you put him in the same category as
Alex Smith 57.7%, 10,364 yds, 58 TDs, 54 INTs, 74.6 RTG. And you put in perpetual mediocre,
Jason Cambell 60.8%, 14,365 yds, 74 tds, 50 ints, 82.8 rat. BTW, I thought it was pretty evident that Eli likes sending prayers, and Romo is very consistent (just high expectations of Cowboy fans).
Eli Manning 58.2%, 24,132 yds, 167 tds, 118 ints, 81.2 rat;
Tony Romo 64.1%, 17,923 yds,125 tds, 67 ints, 95.3 rat.
I know stats don't mean everything, but it's better than one man's subjective list. I know Alex is playing better this season, which is awesome. But, don't say he is comparable to Phillip Rivers, and that Jason Cambell is much worse. At least, not yet.

You lost me at Rivers an up and comer....
He's a top 5 QB in the league and has been for a long time.

Where are you putting now? Looks like you guys have hoisted him grudgingly to the mediocre category. Must mean he he is playing well beyond that.

Based on current preformance? That's kind of crazy if you ask me. He's in the top 5 of QBs right now.

Philip Rivers an "up and comer"? He's up and came, man. He's elite.
At any rate, I'd put Smith just short of your second tier. He's got a lot to prove to match Superbowl winners like Eli or Big Ben. But, at least he hasn't raped anybody or said he was as good as Tom Brady, so that's a plus.
Based on this year's performance, I'd say he's as good or better than Shaub or Romo, but he's a very different kind of QB than them.
