Whats the player's familiarity with the scheme? No point in picking someone up who can't contribute while getting to know the play book.
How does the player mesh with the current "blue collar" mentality?
T.O. is out, he's still recovering, who knows how similar this scheme is to the ones he's played in... and "blue collar" doesn't exactly define TO, other than in his dedication to his body.
TJ... who knows? Good bet that Jim placed a little call to John to get the 411 on how TJ handled his time in Balt. and why things didn't work out there.
Long or Ziggy will are my best guesses to get signed. Hastings still needs more time to get acclimated to the pro level, Long made some nice plays in preseason... but Ziggy should be the guy. He has a history with Alex, sure hands, great routes, and some familiarity with the offense. Most importantly.. he is Mr. Blue Collar and will be accepted in the locker room because of the previous work he has put in with this team. The chemistry of this team is giving us an advantage and there is no reason to bring in a big name past-their-prime free agent to jeapordize the locker room when it has boughten heart and soul into what Harbs is sellin.
I'm going to respectfully disagree with this. When T.O. was with the Niners, he was an excellent down field blocker and a complete football player. He learned his work ethic from Jerry Rice and continued to work hard on his game throughout his career.
It was never his actual game (other than dropping passes on occasion) that put him on the bad side of coaches. It was his outspokenness, questioning of coaching strategies, and his antics like the Dallas star incident. Sometimes that is OK but in a team game, sometimes, it definitely isn't.
Ultimately, great players demonstrate a level of emotional maturity that also elevates them to another level. Look at guys like Montana, Lott, and R Craig (and in contrast, look at a guy like Haley). Unfortunately, neither T.O. nor R Moss have demonstrated that level of emotional maturity that truly separates the very good from the great.
