Here's how Matt Miller of the Bleacher Report grades our OL play:
http://bleacherreport.com/pages/nfl1000-position-rankings
Goodwin ranks 16th among centers with a 70/100
Staley ranks 16th among left tackles with a 75/100
Davis ranks 20th among right tackles with a 63/100
Snyder ranks 32nd among right guards with a 45.5/100

left guard rankings are next

summaries:
"Staley has the raw talent to be a top-10 offensive tackle, but his inconsistencies as a blocker hide his exceptional size and agility. If Staley can continue improving and stay healthy, he could eventually be one of the best here.

In terms of execution, Davis was one of the worst players I saw—at any position. His athleticism saves him.

Goodwin made the move from New Orleans to San Francisco without missing a beat. He's a smart center who helped solidify the left side of the 49er offensive line. Goodwin is solid, even if unspectacular.

The San Francisco 49ers were fortunate enough to play in 18 games during the 2011 season, including the playoffs. During that time I charted just four games where Snyder had a "plus" score—Cincinnati, Washington, Pittsburgh and New Orleans. The other 14 games were solid evidence of the fact that Snyder has to be replaced."

Just one guy's opinion, but looks like he did a lot of film study.
Snyder was never more then a utility depth guy....hated him starting

Capable and versatile backup for sure, mediocre starter imo. It's not like our o-line just magically kicked ass once he started, it just didn't absolutely implode like with chilo.Snyder was a temporary band-aid on a deep wound. He's not going to take a pay cut to be a backup here and the best way to improve the line is to bring in new talent to compete for the starting RG spot. Continue to build(draft+fa) in that one spot and the whole line will reap the benefits.

final stats for the 2011 season on time QBs had to throw before they were sacked: http://footballoutsiders.com/under-pressure/2012/under-pressure-violence-rams

Rate of sacks at 3.0+ seconds: 2.6% for Alex, 0.1 better than the NFL average.
Rate of sacks at 2.5-2.9 seconds: 3.7%, 1.5 worse than average
Rate of sacks under 2.5 seconds: 3.3%, 1.5 worse than average

Among QBs who started more than a handful of games, no other QB was sacked at a higher rate in under 2.5 seconds than Alex. Most had a sack rate under 2%

Can't wait for our DL to crush Snyder. Davis should improve a lot if we just get a competent RG.

Must disagree with this much. Goodwin came in and flat-out sucked. He did start to improve after essentially costing us the Dallas game... and continued to get a lil better from there on.

I agree. Goodwin also ranked 3rd-worst among centers in pass-blocking efficiency, according to Pro Football Focus, though I do blame Snyder/Rachal for a lot of that.

The new BR report has Lupati listed as the #2 LG behing Nicks but that will change after another year in the NFL. He is our greatest asset on that line and I am glad JH knows how to use him.

Iupati was rated the 2nd best left guard in the league behind carl nicks, if we upgrade the right guard position, then our line should be set
wouldnt mind trading up for glenn decastro or konz if we get lloyd or royal in FA

As stated in another thread yesterday, Goodwin finished 32nd of 34 centers in the league in pass protection, as shown by the statistics of Pro Football Focus. Six sacks was amongst the very worst in the NFL.

This is why it's not a concern that he's gone. Simply couldn't handle up the middle rushes a lot of the time, physically. Iupati stones the opposition when he knows who to block. Snyder and Goodwin got pushed back and shoved into Smith.

Smith shouldn't have to turn 3 or 5-step drops into 10-step drops or frantic scrambles because his linemen and being launched into his facemask instantaneously..

Hard to know how to assess these guys given the nature of line play--teamwork. An upgrade at RG should help Goodwin though and then bringing in someone to compete for the center spot is very important.

Edit: looks like they are looking at stop gap measure by talking to 35 year olds!

Our OL was much better than the averages show. The away games sack numbers heavily weighted our average along with 2 or 3 games where we gave up 6+ sacks.
If Fleener is taken ahead of us and the FO doesn't like the WR crop available when we pick in the 1st, Id really love for us to get Kevin Zeitler. He was a beast of a Guard for one of the best running attacks in the nation. Those Wisconsin boys know how to play Oline. Plus hes not just a big fat road grader, he can pull and move around and is an excellent pass blocker. He should be available after DeCastro and Glenn are picked.
