Crabtree, Edwards, Vernon Davis. His weapons aren't as bad as you guys are making it out to be. Unfortunately health isn't there right now. Still good quarterbacks elevate receivers. We saw that with Romo. All of his receivers went down and he beats us with some guy they got from a reality TV show. Across the board with us it seems like if they're not a top 10 pick they have no expectations whatsoever.
patriots have an excellent line with talented players chosen to fit a scheme but i wouldn't characterize their defense as superb. one thing people forget about brady is that when defenses are able to get pressure and hit him his performance drops significantly,i.e. the last 8 playoff appearances 15 tds-11 ints a 4-4 record with 3 straight losses. i'm not saying he's not a great qb but sometimes people don't look past the numbers. this season after 3 games we are scoring more points per game than we are allowing and if trend continues we will be 15-1

fwiw, Holley was basically uncovered on his three receptions. i could have connected with him just as easily.

Crabtree is garbage WTF he is not a weapon

Then you and me agree. That's why I get so annoyed when people start heaping praises on the guy like he's all world. All these threads about Smiths deceptive passer rating make me..... I'd be totally cool if we just let him play his game and took it for what it was, but having a bunch of guys on this board trying to convince me/us that some how he is a very good qb just pisses me off....

I think I'm ready to be banned (At least for a couple months). I like a lot of guys on here, but the collective herd mentality is getting to me.

I agree to the extent that Alex Smith is not proving he is an Elite QB - but I do believe he is not hurting the team and in many cases is helping - he has been consistent and steady when virtually no one else has besides Vernon - Braylon was playing well before he went down - but he went down so you can't include him in that. I think my frustration is the constant obsession with the destruction of Alex Smith - This obsession with Colin at this point is silly he would hurt the team because with that line he would literally have 5+ INT's already.

It's like the last few years when Nate Davis was all the rage - It is a joke. Alex and Vernon are doing what they are asked to and doing it well - if you want to focus on a problem let's start a thread about Chilo or anyone on the O line except Staley that is our fricking issue at the moment. The Offensive line play is limiting everyone at this point - Coaching Staff / QB / RB - as an example they have to keep Delanie and Vernon in constantly for pass protection vs using both of them to spread the D and open things up - which we need DESPERATELY as our WR corp is not that good.

O line and WR core is a biggest problem - WR due to injury but also there is no real depth and it is killing us. He is not lighting it up but right now Ocho would have been a great addition - I never thought I would say it but TO will be ready to hit the field in a few weeks they need to think about calling him - seriously - his hands aren't great but he will still make people miss and is better than anyone on the Staff now - besides Crabs who if he stays healthy has the potential to be really good.

Crabtree has made some amazing TD catches over the years for Alex.....sure there are 5 yard drops here and there....but Crabtree is certainly not garbage. Imo, Crabtree is a better WR, than Alex is a QB. I wonder how he'd do on another team.

or did Brady put the ball where his receivers can catch it, while still being defended? Alex has shown he can do it, here and there....pass to Williams and pass to Crabtree in the endzone.

I say we do that more early on.
Tom Brady also had a very very good defense, and oline, and he stepped into an already settled offense and such. The Patriots were still a pretty good team that Brady inherited when Drew Bledsoe was injured. This is nothing like Alex's circumstance.
I think we have a pretty good team....great special teams and a good defense, that can be great (if the offense helps them out).

I don't think our approach is helping us out....or at least will help us out against good teams. Brady and company would spread defenses out, and Brady would do a good job getting rid of the ball before a defender could get to him.

We are not going to change our whole Offensive line....imo we might as well adjust to it. Help it out. Call plays that keeps teams from stacking the box. Make them pay for blitzing. Spread them out. Get Williams on the field, throw quick slants to him. Call reverses to Ginn. Something to keep the defense thinking. Something to keep them from run blitzing us all the time.

Very good post! I agree with everything. Our defense is still suspect in the secondary but I think having Goldson and Shawntee back has been a huge upgrade.

As far as the offense, my believe is that this will come with time. I'm not a Homer but I have been a Utes fan just as long as I have been a 49ers fan. The past 6 years I have stated over and over that Alex just does not look like he did at college. At times he has, but that was far and between. This year he is looking like the player we drafted at #1. I mean that as far as efficiency, decision making, poise, mobility and actually like the announcers were saying swagger. The one thing he has yet to accomplish is his explosiveness. The big plays that make you think "wow!" He's shown a little bit like the VD throw yesterday, the Crabtree non T.d.( ), and the play against the Cowboys.

I personally see this offense coming together quite well, the issues are with the Oline, and lack of run game. Again Alex is responsible for 85.3% of the offensive yards thus far. Most teams cannot win with that being set for many seasons. With a brand new team, with a brand new HC, OC, it's going to take time to get the playbook installed. More than a single month. But even after we get the playbook installed it's going to time to transform this offense and start playing to the players stregnths. Once everything is installed, you will see a much much better offense. Efficient, and controlling the TOP. It just is going to take time.

Now I'm not saying Alex is going to be a Tom Brady, but I do see him being more of a Flacco type. A guy that can manage a game well, and make throws when he has too. Not only that but the similarities in the Harbaugh's offenses suits both players well.

Could be, would be - yet they haven't been on the field together ONCE this year - hell they haven't even been on the same PRACTICE field this year - huge disadvantage.

Having them would help Alex and the Oline - but we don't so that is why it is bad.

On the bomb both defenders bit on the play fake, the other 2 completions he had a slight cushion.

You should try out for qb then because you'd be able to do something that we can't.

Davis is a beast but this league is about Super Star Receivers, not Super Star TE's.

Crabtree is not a Star Receiver, he's been hurt, and is learning the league.

Edwards was the go to player in Cleveland but is hurt.

Romo has had Miles Austin and Jason Witten eventhough Bryant was hurt last week.

Probably better because he may want to be there, unlike here.

Strongly disagree with this - Crabs has loads of talent and he does show it - Crabs problem is he can't stay on the field due to health and seems at times to view practice as Allen Iverson did.

Saying he is garbage is really just silly though.
What's wrong with calling Smith a game manager? We should be happy since this is an upgrade from the previous years of suck play at QB.
