We will just sign someone after the damage is done and let them start

Bono was close, what was he, like 5-1 with Montana and Young out in '91

At the end of the season they were the best team in the league and finished 10-6. If Bono were playing today he'd be #1.

Jeff Garcia

Agree, my favorite 49er when I started watching. He plays with so much heart, rooted for him in Cleveland, Detroit, Phili & Tampa. To those who don't know he is an joining a radio station now as an announcer.
How the f**k Tolzien didnt make the chargers is beyond me...

Alex Smith is the #1, and Kaep is the definite #2 (regardless of preseason struggles); Harbaugh clearly isn't interested in signing a vet to interrupt his plans with resurrecting Alex Smith (and shifting Kaep into the mix towards the end of the season), cause Jim could have held a full-court press for Hasselbeck, MacNabb, Vince Young, or Billy Volek.

Heck, Culpepper probably turned us down because he knew we would have only used him as a 'liability' during preseason (with his ass getting cut by Sept. 2nd; regardless of Kaep's play).

Pretty sure this is spot on. For me, so far, I really like the way the HC is running our Niners; close to the vest, no politics, best player plays, curt interviews with the press, all of it. After the last 7 years it a hurricane worth of fresh air.. Looking forward to this season, at the very least it will be highly interesting!

GO NINERS!!

I think they bring someone in... Trent Edwards or Adam Froman

I think they will try to sign Scott Tolzien or Graham Harrell. Later if needed they could probably move either Tolzien or Harrell to the PS.

They released McCown because he was a "vested veteran" and his salary is high and it would be guaranteed if he were on the roster for week one. If they sign McCown AFTER week one, his salary is not guaranteed and they can release him at anytime without paying his full salary. They know that he will study the playbook and that they will be able to sign him later, if needed.

Edwards was available all summer and they didn't sign him. Unlikely that's who they like. Plus I think that he's also a "vested veteran"
I really wish we would see what the Bengals would take for us to see if Carson Palmer would play for us. Otherwise, I think we stay with Smith/Kap barring no injuries.
Tolzein

Who is out there that we could pick up? Is there anyone really? Its obvious the coaching staff gambled by letting Mccown hoping someone else would drop someone but it really didnt happen. The only person i could think of that is capable of a third stringer is Brodie Croyle.. He played one game for cardinals ( 10-16 for 100'sum yards)... maybe tolzein from the chargers.. I wish we could have gotten someone like Bartel from the Cardinals... Hes undrafted qb that is very promising.. I hope we could trade for him or something. I know its the preseason and games dont matter but this guy is playing good.. (37/54 68% comp 530yds 5td's 2ints)

Anyone else of not available?

You really think we "gambled" letting McCown go? Really?! Dude was playing in the UFL,its not like a lot of NFL teams where busting down his door trying to sign him. I bet if we want him back, he'd be pretty easy to get. Harbaugh must like another QB better. Cutting McCown really isn't that big of a deal.
ClaytonESPN: Sixteen teams, most ever, kept only two QBs on the roster. The new rule of having 46 active players instead of a 3rd QB had its impact.

ClaytonESPN: The number of teams with three QBs should shrink by one soon. The 49ers are on the lookout for backup
