He is an idiot because he is critical of a bad football team ???

No. He can be critical but he is always critical of every little things the 49ers do. Then he gushes over everything the Patriots do. Look at his draft pick ratings. Rarely likes what the 49ers do and loves every pick (even 6th and 7th rounders) of the Pats.

Well we dont really do many things right anymore.

The only way Luck winds up on the 49ers is if he utterly falls on his face this upcoming season while other college guys shine. There are several college QBs this year who should have very good season and be called early the first day of the draft.

As to Gore, he should get a nice contract that is front-loaded so if his career goes the way most 28 year old NFL RBs go, the team can release him if he has another major injury and/or his performance drops off. If he does well, then he gets the money.

This kind of alludes to a more interesting discussion. While I agree that Luck is the pick if the Niners end up with the #1 overall, what happens if we pick in the 5-6 range? Do we take a guy like Landry Jones(I'm not as familiar with his game as some, so maybe he wouldn't go there, feel free to correct me)?

Good question but it is WAY too early to guess.

My firm hope is that between Alex and Kaep, by the end of the season it will be clear that we do NOT need to use another high draft pick on a QB. To do that would be to set the team back even further.

Not if, you hit on the QB pick.

"The Niners' QB situation. San Francisco's No. 1 need before the lockout was quarterback, their No. 1 need after the lockout was quarterback and their No. 1 need today is quarterback. When are they going to admit that Alex Smith is not their answer -- or anyone else's?"

-Michael Lombardi; NFL.com

Everyone else sees it, but yet we cannot. If you're critical of the QB play you're labeled a hater. Answer this, if Drew Brees was the 49ers starting QB, even with a new coach, the inconsistent play of the offensive line, questions about the secondary, would you not feel better about the team right now?

DISCLAIMER: IT'S not ALL about the QB. I understand that, but is the most important position on the field in perhaps all of team sports. If you don't have one, generally you're not a good team, correct?

Rams have a new OC and a 2nd year QB. Arizona has a new QB. Seattle has a new QB.

One of those teams do not have what is considered a good QB from folks around the league.

Two of those teams have looked better than that one regardless of their situation requiring learning a new system.

49ers are more similar to SEA here than any of those other teams.

True. I'm not for tanking for Luck or anything like that. But a honest look at the o line and knowing Smith's history, leads me to believe that this season won't end well. I really thought the o line was going to be a strong point this season.
I respect Peter King but really...2 bad PS games and we're "in the running" for the 1st pick?

Can we at least wait until game 1 or 2 of the regular season before we deem ourselves as LUCKy?

Michael Lombardi is bitter about not getting an offer to be GM here. He immediately set off on a "hate the 49ers" binge. He has no cred with me.

Yes, we need better QB play but to say that neither Smith nor Kaep are the answer is to basically say that Jim Harbaugh was a bad hire because he will not be able to turn either of there two into serviceable QBs.

As we have done around here on multiple occasions, when you look around the league, there are 10 teams who would be glad to have Alex Smith instead of the guy they now have.

I'll leave this little dance now. The only thing I want to see from this team right now is improved OL play. If that happens, there is enough quality to win 5, perhaps 7 games if the breaks go our way. Micro-managing the pre-season is a pointless exercise. Until the real games start, there is little of interest for me now. I could probably list the 53 man roster right now along with the starters on both offense and defense. I have seen enough to hit about 95%. The question is; will it be good enough to get to .500.

7. I think it's hard to imagine why the Niners, who will engage in contract-extension talks with the agent for running back Frank Gore today, will offer Gore more than just token guaranteed money. Gore's a warrior, to be sure, but he's also had a career's worth of surgeries since his Miami days; both knees have been cut on. He's 28. Love the guy, and you want to show him loyalty, and you don't want to show the locker room you're cold as ice, but you also have to sign guys you're sure will help you well into the future.
8. I think, from what I've seen in the preseason so far, the 2010 Stanford coach has a pretty decent chance to coach the 2011 Stanford quarterback on the 2012 San Francisco 49ers.

No matter what you think about Peter King, I think he hit the nail on the head on both these points. Gore is our best player, but he is on the down side of a typical RB career. Signing him to a long term contract with big money is probably not going to happen. In regards to the Andrew Luck sweepstakes, I think the Niners and the Seahawks will both be in the running for the #1 pick based on their Offensive line performance and their QB's. Scary but true.
I gotta disagree on both sides. I surely don't think they can give him a Deangelo Williams-type contract (as its said that is what he is looking for). That said, I think a good-faith 2-3 yr. contract with incentives and decent guaranteed money is fair. Barring injury, Gore has not lost a step and is a top 7-8 back in the league. He deserves more than a "token" contract.

As for getting Luck next year...not a chance. I am not screaming playoffs, but we have good - very good personnel on this team. Basing a prediction for this season on the past few preseason games is ridiculous. Teams that look great in the preseason rarely look that way in the regular season....and vice versa. Listen, I think the team will struggle at times this year, but to think that we will be potentially picking #1 is just stupid talk. Next week, King will say he thinks some other team will be in catastrophe mode. Consider all of the teams that are in the bad - questionable range (SEA, AZ, OAK, DEN, MIN, CIN, CLE, WAS, BUF, MIA, TEN, CAR, JAX). I'm not saying we are locks to be better than all of these teams, and a few of them will probably turn out to be pretty good, but trying to say we are worse than most or all of them is silly.

In regards to Gore's contract, you are assuming alot. You are assuming Gore will settle for a "good faith" contract, not Deangelo Williams type money. I don't think he will be happy at all with anything less than a 4 year deal with some serious guaranteed money. We have been hearing reports that his frustration is starting to show on the practice field and that is not good at all.

In regards to the preseason, you are right. Preseason performance does not usually translate to the regular season. However, for the Niners QB's to end up with a ZERO rating combined in any game is alarming. The NFL is a QB driven league and we have one questionable option, plus a rookie right now. The Niners play the AFC North and the NFC East this year in the regular season and the only cake game I see out of those games is the Bengals. That leaves us with our own pathetic division. The Rams and the Cards are set at QB and only the Seahawks appear to be worse off than the Niners. Saying that the Niners are in the running for the top pick seems reasonable to me based on what I have seen so far.
Would be crazy if we pick Landry Jones next year. I picked him off twice in high school. The Artesia Bulldogs whipped everyone. We lost 50-36 in that game closest anyone came 2 beating them

Agree
Peter King:
You don't want to overrate the results of any preseason game, and I won't here, but Belichick will have good reason to be tough with his team in practice this week...

He doesn't want to overrate the results of a Pats preseason game, but based on the Niners preseason game, we're going to be the worst team in the league.

In case you haven't noticed, the Pats have perennial playoff contenders for a decade now, while the Niners have been perennial losers for a decade. Teams that are consistently successful get more leeway than teams that look consistently inept.

I mean, how many teams, other than the Niners, this pre-season haven't even thrown a touchdown yet?

The Niners will always be booty until proven otherwise by play on the field. You have to earn respect. The Pats have, the Niners haven't.

meh. Peter King is a Pats sucking hypocrite, a terrible writer, and a fool. You are right, but that doesn't mean that Peter King isn't those things.

I would say in light of the fact that we pursued other QB's (e.g. Hasselbeck) the front office knows that Alex isn't the answer. He's a stop-gap. He knows it, and everyone else knows it. The only reason he's here is because we didn't have a better option.
