You didn't read the article, did you? He is echoing what the fans are saying. you can'y deny the fact that he and Mccloughan are responsible for this team. Basically we shouldn't be in a rebuilding mode. We supposedly have our core players and have been drafting around them for the past several years. how many more years do we have rebuild. BTW, this was Baalke's second draft. Get your facts straight.

Baalke took over weeks before last years draft. Those picks were more than likely already set in stone before Baalke got in there. And even so, you don't turn things around in 1-2 drafts.

And Baalke was 2nd to Singletary in 2010 as Singletary was the 'Trigger Man' and Baalke was VP of Player Personnel, NOT GM. (Remember, the press skewered SF for not having a GM immediately after McCloughan resigned/was dismissed for "personal reasons", i.e., liquor problems.)

And it took Walsh until his 3RD draft to address the defensive backs situation, which he described AFTER HIS 2ND FULL YEAR as being so bad as to not show up on the game film at times.

Really, then how do you explain trading your two for a seven in just a year. Please don't tell me it was Sing's draft, and if you did, then what does that tell you about Baalke as a GM.

He wasn't GM in 2010.

In regards to A. Davis, Baalke and Sing simply happened to agree on him. If Sing didn't want him Baalke would not have been able to draft him. It was Singletary's draft to control and have final say on. Period. See the articles written about the draft at the time (with quotes such as "Singletary put his stamp on this draft class for years to come...").
I saw Harbaugh searching for answers down at the San Fran docks over the weekend. He was looking for some 300 lb stevadores to play O-Line.

The offensive line, dreadful so far, is a Baalke creation, often in collaboration with deposed GM Scot McCloughan: The line has three first-round picks — Joe Staley, Anthony Davis (exclusively a Baalke pick) and Mike Iupati (exclusively a Baalke pick). It has one second-round pick, Chilo Rachal. The 49ers drafted Rachal over DeSean Jackson. Jonathon Goodwin, whom Baalke recently brought in, is a former Pro Bowl player. This is not a beginner offensive line. For the most part, it is the line the 49ers wanted.

http://www.pressdemocrat.com/article/20110829/NEWS/110829473/1057/SPORTS0908?p=all&tc=pgall

So let's start with the bad journalism and the out-right lie: Anthony Davis (exclusively a Baalke pick) and Mike Iupati (exclusively a Baalke pick). Really? Do we believe that Singletary had NOTHING to do with this?

I find it insulting that Cohn thinks we didn't understand the power relationship with the 49ers since MIKE NOLAN and subsequently Singletary was hired; the GM was a powerless position that only dealt with scouting and ALL final decision-making when it came to the roster was ultimately held by the HC.

That is a fact. Period. End of Story.

Please explain to me why a GM would draft someone the HC would NOT keep on the team? He wouldn't. This is the reason why McCloughan had to "convince" Mike Singletary that Patrick Willis was a good player. It stresses who REALLY had the final say in the draft war room. And this in a nutshell why I don't like Cohn; he oversimplifies and is often misleading, reactive and provides an opinion based on his emotions, not anywhere founded in reality. The GM has NEVER had the power over the roster until THIS season and as a result, you're seeing a purge of all the players who were first POORLY picked by McCloughan who was a WEAK GM by design and all of Singletary's ill-informed picks.

The 49ers suck because of all of the players? Really? A completely NEW coaching staff has nothing to do with this? Baalke in the hot-seat?

I call bull-crap.

This article is meant for nothing other than generating traffic.

Good stuff.

190836, why do you ALWAYS rush to defend Cohn? I'm just curious.

Baalke didn't have final say over the 2010 draft!!!!!!! He was promoted literally 3 sec. before the draft. I'll judge him on this years rookies and FA's that were brought in.

I'm not sure if it can be blamed on baalke, but we looked way more prepared (in the preseason at least) last year compared to this year.

I have my fingers crossed, that harbaugh really does know what he is doing, and we are just caught up in the game.

What you don't understand NinerGM is the mind set and the philosophy of this front office. Baalke for your information was a scout under ScottM, and if you remember SM as well as Jed York use to praise Baalke for his vision and talent evaluation. You can't deny that. He had every influence on SM. and his picks for several years. The dude has been here since 2005, you can't tell me he had no influence on those picks. You guys are critical of Cohn and thats fine. But he is the only one who questions the direction of this team, whats wrong with that. You talk about the Nolan's era that led to Sing's and finally to Harbaugh and how the GM had a powerless position. Why would you hire a powerless GM such as Baalke who has been the shadow for all these years? Whether Baalke was the GM or the VP of ops under Singletary he drafted those players in 2010 and had influence in previous years. I watched those drafts too. He was responsible for those draft picks, whether Sing had an influence or not. Are you telling me that Harbaugh didn't have any influence this year? Its all hand in hand, which brings us back to this front office's philosophy on player personal. The difference between us is this, you always have an excuse and some sort of justification for our failure and as for me, i just call it like i see it, which is nothing but BS for the past decade, which again it brings us back to the Yorks and their incompetence.

Did you watch the draft? Who sat their and made the calls on the draft room? It was John York, Jed and him in draft room with Sing going in and out all the time. Whether he was the GM or VP of ops is irrelevant, he was the trigger man.

Cohn is garbage. Straight up hater to get hits on his horribly written articles.

to be fair, though (grudgingly), he's right that we shouldn't look at this team as one in full-on rebuilding mode. However, I think realistic fans look at this as a "take your lumps" year while a new coaching staff rushes to implement changes on a stagnant team. A poor season, which might be likely, shouldn't be enough to call for anyone's head. There have been major mistakes in the draft over the last few years, and we could argue all day about who they belong to, whose decision it was, but the Harbaalke team seems to be one that has a clear vision and, since it is still in its infancy, I think we need to give it time.

It is remarkable that there has never been a player revolt over the past eight years. It speaks well of the people brought in by Nolan and Singletary as far as character is concerned. Last year was the closest they have come to a revolt and it was a quiet, controlled effort by VD and Willis to get Smith to talk back to Singletary. So, even though they have had withering failure, the players have worked hard to rise above it.
