I say we go 9-7 or possibly 10-6.

I understand we've won 12 of the last 13 against Detroit, but this is a different team. The last time we played them was in 2009 and 2nd-year player Drew Stanton was making his first career start, and he threw three interceptions. Their starting RB was on IR, they had no one worth noting along their DL or in their secondary aside from rookie Louis Delmas, and their OL was poor as well as receiving corps outside of Calvin Johnson. Their TEs were crap. That game was also in San Francisco.

This is their 2009 roster: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009_Detroit_Lions_season#Final_roster

We have a chance to win if Stafford isn't playing. But even then, we still might lose. We're playing in Detroit, and this is what their roster looks like THIS year:

Offense:
QB: Stafford
RB: Best, LeShoure (IR), Mike Bell, Aaron Brown, Jerome Harrison
WR: Calvin Johnson, Nate Burleson, Titus Young, Derrick Williams, Rashied Davis, Stefan Logan ...
TE: Scheffler, Pettigrew

Defense:
DE - Avril, Vanden Bosch, Lawrence Jackson, Willie Young
DT - Suh, Corey Williams, Fairley, Sammie Hill, Andre Fluellen, Quinn Pitcock
LB - Tulloch, Justin Durant, Bobby Carpenter, DeAndre Levy, Doug Hogue, Ashlee Palmer
CB - Eric Wright, Chris Houston, Alphonso Smith, Nathan Vasher, McDonald, Berry
S - Delmas, Wendling, Erik Coleman, Amari Spievey, Michael Johnson, Randy Phillips

LIONS PRO BOWL PLAYERS: Calvin Johnson, Suh, Stefan Logan (ST), Wendling, Delmas.

Well, if I had any money, I'd still bet the Niners win that game... despite the Lions improvements.

Actually, OTC & MD:

The Giants just lost ANOTHER CB for the year. So I suspect they're going to look really bad against the pass this season. We have a real shot at beating them at home.

2 Sun, Sept. 18 vs. Dallas Cowboys - LOSS - Toss-up. Dallas is a tough opponent, but we always play them well at Candlestick. We have the talent to win, and their secondary is poor (I see a big day for Braylon).
3 Sun, Sept. 25 at Cincinnati Bengals - WIN - Very bad, although very young, rebuilding team. We do our jobs, we walk out with an easy win.
4 Sun, Oct. 2 at Philadelphia Eagles - LOSS - Way too talented for us right now. Barring any injury to Vick, we will lose this game.
5 Sun, Oct. 9 vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - LOSS - Freeman is only going to be better this year, as well Blount, Mike Williams, and the young Tampa D.
6 Sun, Oct. 16 at Detroit Lions - LOSS - We have had ownage on Detroit in recent years, but I think their defense will harass us and they will wind up winning a close one at home.
7 Bye
8 Sun, Oct. 30 vs. Cleveland Browns - WIN - Another rebuilding team we face who is installing a new defense. We're at home too and we're a better team.
9 Sun, Nov. 6 at Washington Redskins - WIN - Washington is just a very average team. We are more talented, and should win this game.
10 Sun, Nov. 13 vs. New York Giants - LOSS - Unless we can solve the Giants pass rush, this will probably be a blowout loss.
11 Sun, Nov. 20 vs. Arizona Cardinals - WIN - I still don't think Arizona can stop our run game.
12 Thu, Nov. 24 at Baltimore Ravens - LOSS - As much as I want this to be a win.. I don't think we'll stop Boldin, Evans, Torrey Smith, and Ray Rice in Baltimore.
13 Sun, Dec. 4 vs. St. Louis Rams - WIN - We'll beat the Rams at our house.
14 Sun, Dec. 11 at Arizona Cardinals - WIN - See week 11 comments.
15 Mon, Dec. 19 vs. Pittsburgh Steelers - LOSS - It's the 2010 AFC Champs...
16 Sat, Dec. 24 at Seattle Seahawks - LOSS - We might struggle with the Seattle crowd.
17 Sun, Jan. 1 at St. Louis Rams - WIN - We play well in season finales and I think we will steal this one for an upset.

I have a hard time seeing us win 4 road games, going 4-4 on the road. I'm saying 6-10, if we are lucky.

6-10 if we're lucky? Dude, we went 6-10 LAST YEAR with all the dysfunction, lack of coaching, injuries, inconsistency, and...well..SING AND RAYE...AND a tougher schedule.

Now we have at least the same (or arguably slightly better) talent, WAY better coaching, everyone is on the same page, our QB(s) are playing decent, and we have a easiER schedule in the beginning...and you think we'll do the same or worse?

Yeah, the 6 win predicition is not reasonable at all. Unless he thinks we got worse as a team in terms of talent because the coaching has definitely improved.

Also, how do you guys think the offseason will affect certain teams? It seems as though TC and Preseason gives a chance to catchup on a lot of things. OTA's and mini camps in prior years were mainly for conditioning.
I think that at least we should beat the seahawks twice, split with rams and cards, having a 4-2 record within the division.

Outside the division we MUST win against Cinci, Clev and Redskins, which will lead us to a 7-2

Steelers and Philly are the only games I woud dare say we'll loose for sure.

We shold be able to pull a victory over the cowgirls @home or Tampa or Detroit.

The giants will blitz hard, but our D can give Eli a hard time as well and IF (and that's a big IF) our QB has a good understanding of the WCO by then, a big upset could ocurr.

Finally the ravens on a special date, primetime TV and with the war of the brothers, mmmm anything could happen.....

So I really think we could easily finish 9-7 and hell that should more than do it, for the NFC west.

The problem is I did figure kind of the same numbers last year, only to wake up to a fatal 0-5 start (Talking doesn't win games, they say)

Aloha 9ers,

To OTC & Dog, love and appreciate all your pre draft work, but your preseason predictions suck! Get ready to get roasted, deep fried, baked, steamed, BBQed, and (lau laued Maui style) after a 10-6 season!

5-1, in our division.
1-2, Phil, Balt, Pitt
4-3, Dal, Cin, T B, Det, Cle, Wash, N Y

Predictions: This year we learn how to control the clock, close out close games, and win on the road. 10-6, and win at least one playoff game!!! after the lows of the 70's, the highs of the 80's & 90's, and lows of the 2000's, I'm seeing real change and feeling the vibe. hope it isn't just the Tequila in the coolaid....

We did go 0-5 but let's look at those losses:

Game 1 vs SEA - We started hot then our offense imploded. We FAILED to make any adjustments after half time and got pwned. We couldn't even get the plays IN on time. How do you win under those circumstances?

Game 2 vs NO - We had a game tying drive at the end and barely fell short. We could have played stingier defense at the end. Delanie Walker also had a VERY costly fumble in the beginning. Perhaps we just let it get away and let's count this in the LOSS column.

Game 3 vs KC - Again...absolutely ATROCIOUS game planning. We ran, ran, ran, then punted. Our one creative play was a flea flicker with ONE GUY downfield being covered by 3 defenders. Wow...yeah...what a GREAT way to put your team in a position to succeed. Thanks Raye. Better game planning could have kept us in there and maybe helped us win.

Game 4 vs ATL - Started hot (14-0) then we implode. Sure Alex made a bone headed pick but again...we NEVER adjusted to ANYTHING the Falcons were doing. We built up a 14-0 lead then played not to lose. Result...16-14 loss. Don't forget Nate's fumble. Again...LACK OF DISCIPLINE.

Game 5 vs PHI - We were IN the game until Alex's implosion. Nevertheless we almost came back and lost by 3. Sure Alex lost us the game but it was due to a lack of discipline. On that horrific fumble...he should have made the throw to Davis. He was in a similar situation in the Raiders game and went through his progressions and made the tight throw. But for argument's sake...I'll count this as a hard loss.

Game 7 vs Carolina - We were tied or up when Alex was in the game. Smith goes down due to crap o-line...Carr comes in and...

Game 10 vs Buccaneers - We lose 21-0. Troy Smith is starting. We don't game plan for s**t. Get our asses handed to us. Let's count this in the "hard loss" column.

Game 12 vs Packers - It's the Pack. Hard loss.

Game 14 vs Chargers - It's the Chargers. Hard loss. AND we had a poor game plan.

Game 15 vs Rams - Winnable game we threw away. Alex has a decent record against the Rams and could have won this game for us IMO. He came in and went 10/15 for 120 yards after Troy got benched. We lose 25-17. Again...POOR coaching decision and poor planning over all. Team looks fragmented because of Sing.

*************************

Thats 4 games right there that were winnable but we just completely blew. I'm not counting the NO and PHI game which we loss by 3 each. My point isn't to show how close we were but how those games in particular were affected by poor planning/preparation/coaching, etc. Fix those 4 games and make even 3 of those wins...and you're looking at 9-7. Hell, just fix 2 and you're 8-8 and in the playoffs.
1 Sun, Sept. 11 vs. Seattle Seahawks - W ; SEA does not scare me. I think we win at home. 24-13
2 Sun, Sept. 18 vs. Dallas Cowboys - L ; I think we play em close but Romo has a nice game and Smith makes a costly mistake in the 4th. 20-24
3 Sun, Sept. 25 at Cincinnati Bengals - W ; I believe we can contain Dalton and the offense. 20-10
4 Sun, Oct. 2 at Philadelphia Eagles - L ; Smith struggled the last time @ Philly. To much firepower. 17-27
5 Sun, Oct. 9 vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - W ; I think our offense has a better showing than last years debacle. 23-20
6 Sun, Oct. 16 at Detroit Lions - W ; Gore runs wild and Smith puts together a sold game. 31-24 in a shoot out
7 Bye
8 Sun, Oct. 30 vs. Cleveland Browns - W ; Colt McCoy cant do it alone. 35-17
9 Sun, Nov. 6 at Washington Redskins - W ; Beck? Grossman? 27-10
10 Sun, Nov. 13 vs. New York Giants - W ; Alex Smith has a nice game and the defense picks off Manning late. 23-21
11 Sun, Nov. 20 vs. Arizona Cardinals - W ; 49ers are now in the top 7 power rankings. 28-20
12 Thu, Nov. 24 at Baltimore Ravens - L ; In a defense of battle 13-20
13 Sun, Dec. 4 vs. St. Louis Rams - W ; 24-17
14 Sun, Dec. 11 at Arizona Cardinals - W ; We have the division won. 24-17
15 Mon, Dec. 19 vs. Pittsburgh Steelers - L ; Smith has key turnovers in a tough fight. 20-27
16 Sat, Dec. 24 at Seattle Seahawks - W ; Gore has a big game. 30-20
17 Sun, Jan. 1 at St. Louis Rams - L ; We have the playoffs to get ready for and play the backups. 13-24

11-5

To be fair, I think MD's take is extremely harsh. I don't think we'll be any worse than 7-9 -- and that's the worst I could possibly see. Still think we can possibly go 9-7, but 10-6 .. I don't know.

I'll be elated if they exceed my expectations. We'll pop this thread back up later in the season to see who was right.

Wildcard round: #2 seed, b***hes. we rest
Divisional: ATL-W--revenge for the last two years
NFC Championship: GB--W--Alex Smith pees on Rodgers face

Super Bowl: PITT--W--Big Ben rapes a girl before the game, is suspended, and then Willis rapes Charlie Batch.
