this is post focoused on offense ill do my defensive one later

Position drills:

Practice started with the 3 Qbs ( smith kapernick and maoli( taking snaps and practicing play action and shotgun snaps. This went on for 10 minutes while everyone else was doing whatever. However, Chilo rachal and Anthony davis were both working with mike solari for a good 30 minutes. I saw solari helping them with their footwork and hand placements.

Smith and Kaep were practicing qb drills in which they practiced throwing slants and to the sidelines about 15 to 20 yards out. On the slants smiths first throw was behind the WR all the other slant passes were perfect. For keep the first throw was a little high on the slants all his other slant passes were perfectly placed. AS for the sidelines routes smiths first throw was behind the WR other than that all the other passes were beautiful. Kaep overthrew his WR 2 times on the sideline routes.
I was paying too much attention the the qbs to see on the other half of the field is where the O line and the D line worked. On the couple of plays I saw I saw joe staley who was able to literally pound a lot of people. He looked real good today in position drills. Another person who looked great is ray mac he was able to beat the o line and get behind the line numerous times although he want able to get to the qb every time the qb for sure would feel the pressure and would have to leave the pocket
As for the ST drills gin and hunter saw majority of the KR reps along with ron jon getting some. I like hunter a lot he is fast and quick I think he will be our PR and may even take a few to the house.

7v 7

On 7v7 I don’t know if it was play calling or not but smith had his WR going for slants while kep was looking deep. Smith checked down to gore 2 times and screened to gore once (in which chilo rachal got all the way upfield for a block !). On one of smiths slants the ball went to gins hand in which it popped int the air for a brock int which resulted in smiths only int of the day. Other than that tibit he completed all his other passes. Kaep over threw Ron Jon on the irst pass which would have resulted in a touchdown however he later hit an open morgan later for a td (don’t know who was covering him but morgan completely got him on a double fake) Other than the first overthrow he looked great he even had a rollout and a great pass to morgan.

Situational drills

Ive never been to a TC before but a good time was focused on situational drills What had to be done is that the offense was on the opponents 45 yard line and with 40 seconds left and no timeouts theey had to gain about 10 to 15 yards and change to the field goal unit and hit the FG. Smith quickly threw a pass to VD for a good 15 yards but Vernon and FG was converted. Kaep was also able to make it with time to spare as he hit ron jon for 10 yards and akers hit the FG.
Harbaugh then had akers hit FG from various yards he hit a 30 yrder 35 yrder missed his 45 yrder wide right then on a 52 to 53 yarder akers was short harbaugh made him kick it again and hit it with a couple yards to spare

11 v 11

In this area smith looked much better than kaep. And this is not because keep looked bad it was just that smith was almost perfect. Smith had very few if any completitions it is quite clear who his favorite target is as he hit VD repeatedly on the seam routes. Braylon rarely worked with alex In practice but on one play with alex he was able to complete a nice 12 to 15 yard slant. My favorite play was when ron jon was lined up on the side the coaches came and stopped the play before the snap and had ron jon 3 or 4
yards close to the middle of the field and then smith him for a 50 to 60 yard bomb . Kaep also looked great he loved to throw to walker over the middle . He also hit ted gin and morgan a couple of times, HE throws it very well deep and has a great arm. They were some plays where keep just holds the ball too long in the pocket however he had 2 or three would be sacks one by ray mac and one by willis. He also fumbled the ball under center twice I don’t know if it was the center or qbs fault as it was under center but this does need to improve if keep wants to start. He also had 1 int in which he rolled out and threw it I wasn’t too sure who it was as I couldn’t see the number but I think it was donte whitner (who played great today more on that on defense post)

Overall I thought the offense played great today both keep and smith played great today smith did very few things wrong other than 2 or 3 passes keep had more incompletions than smith however has the superior arm and looked (and threw) the long ball much more and more effectively (I consider long ball anything more than 30 yards) smith and jaep both did great on the TE seam routes and the WR routes to the sidelines and the slants. One huge thing I would say alex has mastered but keep needs a lot of improvement on is reading the defense on 1 play we saw the LB and safety blitz and alex recognized it made an adjustment and immedietly and threw it to braylon for a quick gain. Kaep on a similar play held on to it and he would’ve definitely gotten sacked as willis was right behind him (possibly a fumble?)

EDIT:

i left out one thing

my TC up and comer is #48 i dont have his name all i know is that he is the new TE for our team he worked mostly with moloni and he literally caught everything he caught some poorly thrown balls he adjusted in air even changed directions to catch a pass behind him solid player and great pick up i dont know about his blocking though but as a catcher we have 3 solid pass catching TE if this guy should ( and i think he will) make the roster

Good insight! My concern is that Alex looked great last year in TC but it didn't translate to the regular season. Supposedly his confidence was also up last year too and that showed a little in the regular season but it didn't translate into wins. I'm hoping Harbaugh will open up the offense a LOT and run plays to get the WR more open because for the last 6-7 years our WR seemed to always be smothered by a DB! Go Niners!

I see what you're saying but to be honest...we havent heard these types of reports on Alex before. He's had "sharp" practices before but this is the first time I'm hearing that he's hitting WRs in the right spots and getting the ball out quickly and taking command, etc. But who knows...we'll see.

Also, "confidence" in the off season doesn't mean anything if you're coaching staff a) doesn't instill it when it matters b) you don't believe in your system c) your coaching staff CONTINUALLY fails to adjust to anything...ever.

Good read.... but hard as a mofo to read through and guess what you were saying with the numerous grammatical errors... and mis-spellings. Thanks for the write up... but I'm sure a lot of us would appreciate it if you would proof read and spell check before posting. Again don't get me wrong... thank you for the effort. Always good to read insightful stuff about the niners.

Big problem last year was that it is easy enough to hit on individual plays but on game day, the SEQUENCING of plays is critical to keep the defense off-balance. Raye was just terrible with his sequencing and that was one of the reasons the offense stunk.

Harbaugh, OTOH, showed to be a master of keeping the defense off balance while at Stanford. I know that is "just college" but I looked at HOW he used sequencing and I am convinced he/Roman will be very effective at this level.
I still can't believe Harbaugh is on the sidelines!

Oh sorry, wrong thread

...but that's what I think when I read how our team is improving
Thanks for the info! Keep it coming!

Sequencing will be huge but at the same time, that still doesn't influence Alex's limitations that he has shown. I think we will still see those but we will see more "open" plays.

Keep in mind, even when things go right for Alex Smith in games, he has never dissappointed the opposition and will leave some plays on the field that could turn the game in our favor.
Nice read! Looking forward to the defensive break down

You must not have been reading much because Alex was built up just as much last year. Everyone said he had more confidence, better accuracy, took command, etc... and I actually witnessed these improvements with my own eyes in training camp. He looked great.

Then, the season started...

Maybe you're right.

Then again...last year during the regular season...I still believe the "failure" was more systemic as opposed to just Alex. Alex could have played lights out in TC but again...when live bullets fly...and you fail to adjust plays and game plans...then it really doesn't matter.
