Right now this defense has a major element of surprise going into week 1. I think there will be a lot of pre snap movement in the front 7 to confuse the qb. Having Sop at NT scares me.
I agree with this!
I agree as well. Having Sop at NT might be good at first. If he plugs the hole from day one that might be good for him but then every team will have to air it out against our secondary, which might be bad for us. If it takes Sop a couple of games to figure it out, it might also give our secondary some time to get better and more comfortable. I say blitz like crazy to keep the oline's guessing and the QB's unsure of their reads.

Yes... Will it be better than 2011? Not sure
I am sure the secondary will take their lumps as they learn the D and mold as a group. Our run D may suffer without Franklin, but that is really TBD. It will be interesting to watch FAngio's schemes versus Manusky's "bend, don't break" schemes.

BPotentially better. More speed everywhere, Soap will do fine and Aldon will tkae some pressure off of Justin - enough to have him get more sacks.

just a thought, with better pressure coming at the qb, do we need much better coverage? or would last years coverage done fine with more pressure on the qb?

I hate that style of thinking and believe fangio does too.
in maunskys defense we waited for a team to make mistakes. in fangios defense we are going to force mistakes!

i hope we do blitz a lot and from all angles, if we're gonna get beat by the qb, i'd rather man up and roll the dice that the pressure will get there rather then sit back in some umbrella like zone watching teams eat up chunks and get made yac yards cus of our poor tackling in the secondary

No. Manusky's scheme is the apex of defensive innovation.

The previous defense gave up some very big plays at the most inopportune moments. There were a few games where they allowed the other teams to win in the 4th quarter. This was a severe problem. The Saints game immediately comes to mind. The offense had taken the lead, but the defense couldn't hold. Also they were not consistent in many areas. With defensive minded head coaches for the last several years at the helm, it truly was a tragedy that the defense was lacking.
Hopefully Fangio focuses heavily on mistake-free defensive football. One of the positive developments has been to have Patrick Willis practice pass rushing drills. It came as a surprise that he had never done this before under Manusky. The most talented players should be made more versatile, allowing for greater options. Fangio seems to be changing the previous trend, which had to done for the 49ers to be successful again.

Can it be better? Yes it certainly can.
Will it be better? Only time will tell.
