Will teh 49ers look to sign any free agents? If so, who are some likely candidates?
MM: Let's go with Panthers CB Richard Marshall and Bengals DE Jonathan Fanene. I'm anticipating the 49ers add one starter who played elsewhere in 2010 in free agency. The market is going to be very lucrative for some of these guys, so if they go after a $10 to $12 million-a-year free agent, that means they'll have a difficult time retaining some of their own guys.
In this scenario, would Marshall push Clements or Spencer for the starting spot?

In this scenario, Marshall would be the second choice behind a Johnathan Joseph, who could be one of the $10 - 12 million-a-year guys that Maiocco is talking about. Would Marshall be able to push either Clements or Spencer for a starting spot? OF COURSE. Spencer can cover, but he can't tackle. Clements can tackle, but he can't cover. Marshall would be a great addition. Fanene just adds depth at DE if Franklin moves on.

Totally agree. Spencer is a #3 & Clements a #2. Fanene would be a nice pick up if Franklin price tag is unreasonable!

That would be cool, I actually met Marshall yesterday he was doing a camp for kids with james sanders from the pats. He was a cool guy.

I think Marshall would be a name if he played on a good team or enjoyed any kind of pass rush benefit. I haven't seen a lot of him, but he seems o be a willing tackler and good in coverage. Joseph is very good, don't get me wrong, but I think he benefits from a strong pass rush. It is hard to compare guys in such different circumstances, and Marshall will probably have a much lower price tag. Nnamdi is Nnamdi, but someone is gonna stuff his pockets, which we can't afford unless Nate gets cut.
