Just ignore ESPN. I don't believe in this "eastcoast" bias that most of you do. What they're saying is true. We're at a disadvantage but it doesn't matter because still gotta play the game.
ESPN has no Eastcoast bias, they have no problems slurping the Chargers when they're doing good. They have a "winners" bias.

All obstacles can and must be overcome.

San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh doesn't believe in excuses. However, the newly-minted head coach is dealing with several disadvantages due to the NFL lockout. Harbaugh hasn't been able to get up to speed with his players or implement his schemes. "Correct, a lot of people are saying that, and I’ve heard a lot of the other coaches say that," Harbaugh said. "But we like the challenge. We’re all going to have to adjust, and come in with the attitude that all obstacles can and must be overcome."

Make no mistake, we are going to have to be cautious with this team this year. Our head coach and Off. coordinator are both coming into their first years in the league. Besides Harbaugh, Roman, and Fnagio, the rest of the staff has never worked together, and they are putting together a completely new playbook for an entire roster of players they've never worked with before. I have a tremendous amount of faith in Harbaugh, but the beginning of this season might be a little rough. Cautious Optimism is the best course to run.

Lower expectations are just fine. Harbaugh will have the team ready to play, just won't be able to install as much or have time to try out UFAs to see how they fit. I hope they concentrate on the OLine and DLine as those two units will greatly determine how the year goes. NT may be a huge problem.

True. At least the offensive guys for the most part have done some work together. The defensive players are gonna come into TC starting at ground zero and having no real contact with the coaching staff at all.

The reason they say we will be the most affected by the lockout is obvious. We are a good team, we are expected to compete every week. They have picked us several years in a row to win our division for a reason, they think we have a good team. For some reason (Singletary, Nolan, Smith etc...) We havent been able to get over the hump. So come to this year, again we have a solid team, but with a new system that hasnt been able to get implemented yet.
Compared to the other bad teams with new coahes who even if the year were off to a good start would still be a bad team so not that much would be expected from them either way. However, us NINERS are a good team who have underachieved but with the lockout, out of all teams that are good or teams that matter we are the ones who will suffer more because we have a new system to operate. That's pretty much it and it makes sense they would think that.

I don't know why some people here are getting upset. First, ESPN does havea eastcoast bias but this is not one of those cases. The 49ers are the team that will be most affected by the lockout because most of the other teams that have changed coaches have either been with their teams as an assistant or have had experience in the NFL as a coach. Harbaugh does not have either.
The 49ers are also implementing an offensive philosophy that is totally different than what they had been doing since the Nolan/Sing era began. The hardest part about the WCO is learning the terminolgy and for QBs the timing of the drops being in unison with the routes the receivers are running. Without the coaching staff being there its very difficult to get the details of the offense perfected. This is going to hurt the offense early in the transistion.

I wish for once the general consensus agreed we would end up in last place in the division and then we could blow them all away and smoke all those fools instead of being handed the division before the pre-season starts like last year.

I think they are right. We will be impacted big time.

The fact that this is a big deal just goes to show how irrelevant the 49ers have become. That we are surprised whenever ESPN does a focus piece on the 49ers. When this team was good they were always mentioned with the Cowboys, Packers, Steelers, whichever team Bill Parcells was working for, etc.

The bold is true but you must also factor in the fact that Alex Smith has shown to be VERY slow at applying new systems...slower than rookie QB's.
