did you watch any games last year? Franklin was average at best

He didn't have a great year, but we don't have anyone proven to backfill him.

there is this thing every team does this time of year called Free Agency. Where you can dump fat loafs like Franklin and get better guys to fill the need
McDonald because he is younger and cheaper. NT will probably be a hole for us until we address it via the draft, but we are transitioning to a pass defense from a run defense. The NT isn't as paramount to stopping the pass as it is the run.

So expect more big days by opposing RBs but reduction in big days from QBs.
Move Soap to NT
I just dont trust Frankin.

This.

He is merely above average vs the run, but offers no pass rush to the interior QB pocket. Once he gets his hands on that crazy load of guaranteed cash, I think he will get lazy and slack off... or just fake injuries to sit on his arse as often as possible.

Re-sign Ray.... slide Sopoaga in... both offer better pass rush from those LDE/NT positions. If we need more beef at times (during goal-line situations or 3rd and short)... rotate Ray out for RJF to play next to Ice.

... and for good measure, sign Brandon Mebane in FA !
I think we look for our stud NT in next years draft. There should be good value there with the 32nd pick...

Love it!!!!
McDonald easily.

He's a playmaker that has yet to realize his full potential. He can drastically improve a pass rush that has been aenemic the past several years.

Franklin is on the downside of his career now that he's 31.

He's really only had one good season in his entire career. I don't think that's worth the money he's going to command.

Given our cap situation, I don't see us picking up anyone better.
Franklin is going to be too much $$$, Ray MackeyMcMackleton

Franklin is already 31 and only had 1 good year. He didnt do anything las year and would be way way more expensive.

Also resigning McDonald would save us some money to sign a legit free agent

I think Franklin said he wants to test the market anyways, and McDonald said he wants to start for the 49ers.

+1

Agree. If salary wasn't apart of it than Franklin is more valuable but we can't pay that much for an above average guy. Part of me also thinks the old regime doesn't know talent when they see it and I would like to see what MacDonald can do as a 3 down DE.
How many players do the 9ers have to step in at NT? How many at DE? Franklyn may be priced out of range but I worry about the NT position for next year. Soap didn't like playing there, is there anyone else ready?
Ray mac, I didn't think we should have franchised franklin last year anyways.
All of you will realize how good Franklin is once hes gone. There is no reason we cant sign both players we are well under the cap, we are thin on the dline and there are no other NTs even close to Franklins caliber available in free agency.

He established himself as a quality starter as a 6 year veteran and never looked back. There is absolutely no reason to doubt this guys work ethic once he gets paid.
