First thing I'd do is address the CB situation and re-sign Lawson. Then make a call to Sidney Rice's agent and try to get something worked out. I'd also sign a vet FA QB (Bulger, Hasselbeck, Bulger, etc) or try to lure a QB via trade. The more competition at the QB position the better.
We all know your feelings about the QB position, however, at this point in time, the one thing Harbaugh and the offense MUST have is someone who knows the system, not a round-robin to see if some re-tread that no one else wants is better than what you have. (but enough on that)
Sorry, I'd have a QB competition. I wouldn't name anyone the starter without a competition. If Alex outperforms everyone, he'll be the starter.
We can be certain that Harbaugh will give Carr, Kaep and Smith all a chance to throw the ball but we all know that Carr isn't the answer and Kaep will still be learning his teammates and the playbook by the time the first game rolls around.
Alex Smith is the de facto starter on this team. Love him or hate him, that is the situation.

Absolutely, you HAVE to have competition at every position, I would think only Willis, Gore and Vernon have their spots nailed down. Maybe a couple of the o-line, but competition is the way to get better.

Bro. This topic is on what the POSTER would do if he is Harbaugh. Currently, yes, ALex is the "de facto starter" on this team. But if JayBee was Harbaugh, he would want to look for other options other than Carr to compete for a starting job with ALex. That is the point of this thread.
And I agree with Jay. If ALex truly is our best option, let him prove it against real competition. Lets not just hand him the reigns and trade away or not get any competition.

Not a good idea to split the snaps at this point. A full load of off-season? Maybe... but not in this case. A competition would limit every QB on the roster... and we can not afford that after the lockout has done its damage. We need our starter to get as much of the experience as possible... not get ready to play musical chairs with the QBs.

I'm sure all the contingency plans are already in place but the first thing I would do is get on Fangio and get the defense a playbook and start cramming HARD! Next I'd try to lock up Alex, Baas and make a realistic play for Franklin and consider the 2nd tier guys such as Goldson, McDonald and restructuring Clements and take a hard look at Haralson's contract. Next I'd bring in undrafted FA's and hit the FA market for the big holes we could potentally have at CB, NT, DE, C, etc. Consider all trades.
Then on to doing Harbaugh's thang and coaching up the new schemes and finding out who fits and doesn't.
Championship.

What do you mean? they have only missed a few OTA's. Why do you think they are rushing now to get a deal. they ALL dont want to miss even 1 day of TC. And they wont.

If I'm Harbaugh I'm rolling with Smith and not splitting snaps. Let Smith get all the reps he can why Kaep sits backs and learns. If Smith stinks it up, Kaep will get his shot, if not, we have a good season and Kaep has a year to take in the offense. I just see no reason to throw Kaep into the fire, especially with the current state of our Oline.

I'd tell Baalke trade for Kyle Orton or get Mcnabb.

A Kevin Kolb clone...but even less talented, if that's possible?

...he'd be the first QB to wear a target instead of a number. You wouldn't have to put his feet in cement...they're already that slow.
McNabb...a shadow of his former self, and Orton, who's never had enough self to throw a shadow...

No question...even is Kaep were to eventually win the starting job, Alex is a great character guy and would not cause problems within the team. It's a win-win for everyone. Alex gets one last shot to prove himself under a competent HC/OC with better talent around him and more weapons. The kid "clearly" wants it and is doing all the right things so far. He'll most likely end up our starter for this season either way. Without him, who do we have?

Are you talking about extending him for this season....or extending him for multiple seasons?

I don't see the need for a multi-year contract. If Smith doesn't work out this year, he won't be back next year - and if he does work out, he's already shown he wants to be in SF...

Orton has produced over a full year, Kolb has not. awful comparison

I'd be OK with either but I was talking about signing him for this year. Either way, he'd be a good backup even if he didn't pan out so signing him LT to a reasonable contract and making him EARN a higher contract could work too.
