Point one, already clearly indicated: Alex has not played well enough for a #1 pick, even if you consider bad coaching.
Point two: At the same time, he's not played as horrendous as some would try to say he has, despite the clear coaching deficiencies that we all know existed.

Nobody is sitting here saying, "I TINK ALEXZ IS FINE AND WE ARE IN AWESUM SHAYP WIT HIM!" No. And I hope no one tries to twist anyone else's comments to say that they're saying such things, because no one is.

The only thing anyone is saying is that while he has not been stellar, he has been OK -- at least "good enough" to believe we have a chance to win more games with a better coach -- and although we are NOT content with what he has shown, because he has not met expectations, we can accept the reality that he is likely going to be the starter.

And with all that said, realizing that seemingly inevitable reality, many simply choose to be cautiously hopeful for the team -- and that's key -- the team. Forget about Alex, we want the team to succeed so sure we hope Alex does well, but that's because we want the team to do well.

We're not expecting anything extraordinary from Alex, or anything all that much more than we have seen lately from him, but many have the continued expectation that if he continues to be at least average, at least OK, the better coaching overall will elevate the play of the team around him and we might win more games.

G' bless you, and you are of course so correct here... but you are wasting your time and fingers on some of the crowd. You have to know that by now.

I think everyone knows damn well that it is ideal for any QB to have the same HC/OC system in place for more than 1 year. Saying and admitting such a thing is okay, people... doesn't mean it is going to happen... but calling it "the potential excuse" is lame. That's like saying a QB's passes are inaccurate because his shoulder is separated. Excuse? No... just a reality that makes such inaccuracy understandable to any intelligent being. So in this case, if #11 does struggle, it should also be understandable. This lockout plus first year in a system is extremely difficult for any player to hit the ground running. Oh, but that's just an excuse...
This post is about Vernon Davis on KNBR, but as always we have turned it into an post about Alex Smith.
Picking up an offense is being thrown around as if it is a short story read in one sitting. Most offenses, Harbaugh's definately, are complex and multi-faceted. It takes years for any QB to master a good offense. Great coaches put in the book a bit at a time so that while the players are overwhelmed, they are not so overwhelmed that they give up.

Harbaugh has stated that he designs thirty or more plays per day. If he has been doing that for months on end, and will continue to do so every year, the players will need to study constantly. What will eventually be gained is an ease with the system as players get on the same wavelength as Harbaugh and Roman.

This is one reason Harbaugh can give his book out and not worry. The plays will morph by next season and will not be recognizable.

Vernon supports Smith, good.

Only Raye had a play book written in stone, where opposing players could go back to his days in Florida thirty years ago and learn the book.

What an awful time that was! Thanks, Yorks. You actually believed in Singletary's filosofy. How freaking juvenile was that?

VD is being smart in talking up Smith. It can't hurt. If Smith fails, or more likely is just sort of maybe kind of ok, then it is on to another QB anyway and VD will support him too. Kind of the anti-TO.

Important topic as their rating together indicates a strength for both players and the team. This is something to build on and hope for a better year given the new offense. Davis' ever growing maturity also gives us hope, perhaps Crabtree can compete with him in this area of professional development.

Well i for one like to look at the numbers, while at the same time, we can all redo numbers to say what exactly we are trying to prove.

In this case these are facts; Vernon Davis, Frank Gore, Josh Morgan, and a few others support Smitty 100%.

Throughout Smith's career, he's had his ups and downs. One game it may seem like he's playing Farveesque, then the next, Tim Rattayish.

I dont necessarily buy the idea about the QB making the WR better or vice versa. I think it's both equally that makes for success. The No 1 receiver and QB should be like best buds, whether u like the person personally or not. The jobs on the team arent to always like who ur partners are, but u do have to respect them, and sacrifice personal feelings for the team.

In soo many games that are waay too many to count since he has been on our team i've seen one common theme... and thats regardless of who we have behind center, through coaching, the same team never showed up for two weeks straight.

Or one side of the ball would keep the game in the lead or close to a tie, just for the other side to falter, and give up the big play. And this happened every year since 02. For every win we seemed to get, we'd lose 2 to 3 straight.

People tried to point out all the reasons why they think Harbaugh wants to bring Smith back, but my thing is does it really matter why. Smith still has teammates, and known teammaates, not benchwarmers, that still believe he can get it done. Which is why Davis said what he did.

Overall, as i've said in the past, if the actual proven players on a team, think he can get it done, and the HC thinks so (for whatever reason).... then i support them 150%.

Go NIners, and maybe Davis will break that TD record for TE's this year. I remember the 11 to 85 combo that was supposed to be happening, and it was funny because it seemed like less calls came Vernon's way, which was shocking being that Smith and Davis have the closest bond on offense in my opinion.

Davis had his best year with Smith behind center, so i dont buy that by default excuse because of this or that reason. He and Smith put numbers up since he's gotten it together, so I think thats why he believes Smith can still get it done.

I bet davis is excited at the possibility of having a real coach! And I bet Harbaugh is excited to have a freak at TE

He never had a coach with a clue about QB's. So this would be his last chance.

fixed

You could call it best chance or last chance. One of his best years was under Norv Turner. A guy with a clue about QB's. And Harbaugh is at least that good or even better. So I would expect the guy to respond. Ideally you would want 2 years under Harbaugh. Because that is what Alex needs. Stability. But he will get 1 and at least this guy knows QB's.

And there it is, the first Alexcuse of the Harbaugh era! Classic.

+limited offseason to workout due to the lockout

They never end.

Don't be so hard on the guy, he started coaching before Rockne came up with the concept of the forward pass.

3 yards and a cloud of dust, worked for Woody Hayes, then it will work for Jimmy Raye.

To be fair, it will be his second time in a WCO system. I see these things as a slight setback to the team and Smith, but I think the bigger issue when speculating the team's success is how much it sets back the development of our young OL.
Wait, wasn't this thread about Vernon Davis?
