He must already have Alex pegged to start the season in his mind, but as previous 9er coaches have shown....you should never assume with when it comes to Alex.

Unless Alex already signed his contract (in the window when there was no lockout) and the team can't announce it due to the lockout.

I don't think Alex is like that. As I recall, when he was benched for Troy Smith last season, he still sought out to help T. Smith in film study and in other ways as well - I'm sure you recall the blogs. Furthermore, when Alex and Shaun were competing for the starting job, they both helped each other out as well. It's well documented that they're close friends.

Alex is the consummate professional off the field.

True, but that was before this season when it seemed like he was always guaranteed to be given the starting job....but in this situations...I don't know how he feels about it.

he was booed late in the season on National Television.....he didn't agree to a contract, when it was obvious that the head coach and others wanted him to come back. I just feel Alex probably feels jaded and is waiting until he is officially with the team, before he goes out of his way to help out new players....one that might take his job.

I'm sure when he is signed, he will be the first one to offer a helping hand.....but for right now, it seems like he is just looking out for himself.....just like Harbaugh should've did when thinking about giving out playbook to someone who is not guaranteed to return.

I agree with you that Alex's demeanor to help a fellow competitor could now have changed. In fact, while there is a QB competition, I hope that Alex does as much as he can to help his own interests. Time to help Kaep will come in due time. You make a good point in that the situation is a little different in comparison to previous times.

I don't believe that free agency acquisitions were allowed during the small window. At that time, coaches could only meet with players. No team was given the permission to sign players as evidenced by well, nobody being signed.

I agree with you that it may have been premature on Harbaugh's part to give Alex a copy of the playbook. But again, I don't think Alex is one to photocopy the details of the playbook around the league. Furthermore, QBs and players switch teams all the time, and I don't think that the knowledge that they have about their past offensive systems is all that critical.
