The San Francisco 49ers are taking a long look at Louisiana State cornerback Patrick Peterson as a potential first-round pick in Thursday's NFL draft. A source told FOXSports.com that the 49ers, who are selecting seventh overall, conducted a private workout with Peterson, who is considered the draft's best defensive back. Peterson also visited the 49ers earlier this week. While the 49ers are expected to address the quarterback position possibly early in this draft or in free agency, they could use an upgrade at cornerback. Aging veteran Nate Clements, who turns 32 in December, is carrying $16.25 million in base salaries over the next two seasons. It’s not out of the question that Peterson is selected by the Carolina Panthers, who own the first selection overall. Cornerback Richard Marshall, who started 32 games the past two seasons, is unsigned for 2011. Other potential landing spots for the defensive back include cornerback needy teams such as the Denver Broncos (No. 2 overall), Cincinnati Bengals (No. 4), Arizona Cardinals (No. 5 overall) and Cleveland Browns (No. 6 overall). Peterson had pre-draft visits with several teams including the Buffalo Bills, Bengals, Broncos, Browns, Cardinals, Dallas Cowboys and Tennessee Titans. During the workout, which took place in Florida, the 49ers had Florida Atlantic quarterback Jeff Van Camp, and his former teammate, wide receiver Lester Jean, working against the athletic Peterson. Jean (6-3, 215) led FAU in receiving last season with 66 receptions. I want Peterson bad. Dude is a play-making threat that's hard to beat on the inside, outside; coverage. -He's the type of naturally-gifted CB that doesn't require the aid of mis-direction assists from pass-rushers to capitalize.

He's a guaranteed Charles Woodson waiting to happen.

Peterson is a great player and we really can't go wrong. BUT... I still prefer UNC DE/OLB Robert Quinn. Our pass rush has been horrible in recent years!

NOOOO is RIGHT!!! He's got a 40% on 3rd down... Dare i say just keep alex, since we don't want to move the chains on 3rd down!!!

With newton its hard to say how he will play out. He's money for 3rd down, but it's with his legs and not so much his arm that gets it done...

I'll take, peterson, Quinn, Aj Green, Darues, Newton/prince... If none of those first 3 are their then i take newton or prince!

Lol it's not like we're going to be a run first team anymore.

I agree with the first two... and maybe Quinn as third choice.

alex has had 48 td and 38 int since rookie year with sing and nolan as our qb (neither no anything about offense) and different OC every year

having 48 td and 38 int with those circumstances and he is the worst qb ever?

wither you guys dont know much about football or well thats it

According to NFL.com his career stats are different than yours. 51 tds and 53 ints. I didn't want to mention the fumbles (34). Where did you get your stats from?

im not here to talk about alex but its not including his rookie year (acually its 37 not 38 int) and also we should take away 2 more int when nolan made him play with a seperated shoulder also apparently its 50 tds not 48

Why are you taking away interceptions from his career? Just because he played under different circumstances, doesn't mean that you can't count the interceptions that he threw during that time. Alex is not a good quarterback. I dont understand why people keep hanging onto him like he is gonna win us a champsionship.
