49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh told the media on Friday that second round pick Colin Kaepernick will be given the opportunity to start as a rookie.

“Alex (Smith) has the ability the license to be the starting quarterback and so does Colin,” Harbaugh said.

Smith is a free agent but the consensus seems to be that San Fran will bring him back on a one or two-year deal – assuming he wants to return, that is. If the 49ers do bring Smith back, he would be the favorite to start over Kaepernick next year, and he should be.

I don’t want to take Harbaugh’s comments out of context. He’s a former NFL quarterback and he knows that sometimes it takes a while for a young signal caller to grasp playing in the pros. But I don’t like the idea of Kaepernick starting right away. He played in the pistol offense at Nevada – no matter how talented he is, it’s going to take some time for him to learn how to play in a pro-style offense. Imagine being taught Spanish in college and then turning around having to learn Italian in order to succeed in your profession. It’s going to take some time and Kaepernick should hold a clipboard in his first year.

Now, before 49er fans get upset with me and call me a moron because they think I’m criticizing Kaepernick – I’m not. In fact, this is what I wrote in my “15 Observations from the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft” piece after the Niners took Kaepernick on Friday evening:

3. It may take a couple of years but give Jim Harbaugh some time and he could turn Colin Kaepernick into a good pro quarterback. Kaepernick is a bit of a project but the kid has good size, a great arm and is one hell of an athlete. He has all the tools to succeed and if fans are patient, this could wind up being a beautiful marriage.

Mark my words, Colin Kaepernick will be the 49ers starting QB for the 2012 season!

Love this pick. He has a high ceiling and sitting a year or two will make him hungry to take the job from whomever is starting.
Meh.

I'm not expecting a super bowl MVP here.

What evidence do you have to support your negative expectations for Kaepernick?
Was you comment regarding 2012 and 2012 only or his whole career? Please expand.

Agreed, I don't see him sitting for anything more than 1 season. The dude is a gamer and one of his life goals is to play QB for the Niners. 2 things he needs to learn is taking a snap from under center and the NFL QB work ethic. The first is appearing more and more overrated with the success of Spread QB's recently in their first year.

The second should only take a year to develop. This kid has accomplished everything he's ever set his mind to, and expects to be successful at everything and will work hard to ensure he is.

His release is fine, it looks long but in reality is very fast and sends out a ball the equivalent of a 90mph baseball with good accuracy. Watching his film, his completion % should of been so much higher but his receivers simply can't handle the passes similar to Elway in college.

Sit him this year and hopefully AS shows a little more consistency under a legit QB staff.
LMAO!!! It's like Michael Vick was reborn as a right-handed, 6 foot 4, saint of a man, with character and brains through the roof, decided to stay in school for four years and fell to the 2nd round in the draft....this pick is the steal of the f**king CENTURY! Kaep had solid to great passing numbers this year...combining that with his ability to score from any point on the field and we're looking at one of the most talented QB's in the history of the NFL...oh yeah, and he scored a 38 on the wonderlic...where's the downside with this kid!?

Big V, didnt you learn how they were when they chanted We Want Carr. I think if anyone chants we want whomever if we started 1-1 or 0-2, then TV stations should clown all of us, and put the WE WANT CARR chant on replay over and over again. And say these are the same fans, that chanted We Want Carr, and the same ones that booed their starting QB in a win.

If Alex Smith starts, I wouldn't be surprised to hear "we want Kap" after the first incompletion that looked like a crap throw.

Also, why is everyone assuming that sitting a QB for 2 years is the best thing for that QB? Who said this was the best method in developing a QB? I have NEVER heard of anyone saying this was the ideal method in developing a QB.

There's only one reason you sit a rookie QB and that's due to crap talent around that QB such as a terrible OL or terrible WR's to the point where that QB can't execute even if the he knew what he was doing.

Almost every NFL QB, when asked this question, I have heard says get as many reps as soon as possible and the QB will be better sooner.

Let's say we sit Kap for 2 years...what do we get when he starts? We get a QB who knows the system in an out but has never started and will still need to learn game time speed.

I'm sure Harbaugh will try to get Kap in as soon as possible and he won't be dumb like Nolan who had the entire playbook thrown at Alex Smith. Harbaugh will do what the Rams and any other smart coach does with an inexperience QB, which is make sure he perfects a few plays and stem off of those.

I have a feeling Harbaugh is hoping to get Kap in ASAP if he can.

It would be nice if he gave Kap a couple of series every game to get him ready for speed of the game.
