The zone blitz was invented to counter the quick passes of the wco, particularly the slant. The defensive linemen drop back in coverage and LBs/DBs blitz.

Going back to the 80's the 3-4, hands down. It is THE BEST defense against timing-offense. The Giants killed us back in the day, Chargers and many other 3-4's have owned the Colts, Steelers, Pats, even Cowboys, etc.
If you have the personnel and correct scheme, it's a physical defense that disrupts you the second the ball is snapped and that spells trouble for timing offenses.
I guess it doesn't have to be a 3-4 but certainly has the aforemenioned.

Problem being that only kills the timing of the passing game. A true WCO would counter with FB runs.

3-4 zone blitz because it makes your Qb second guess himself which takes more time and allows the defense to get there, or it forces him to make a mistake.
