Ah, yes thanks. I had skimmed through rather quickly and did not read all of the posts. Yes, on that play, it's hard not to assess a fair portion of blame on Alex. Should have been a more accurate throw. Would still have liked to see Gore make a better effort on the ball... but the ball should have been better placed.

The next lil pass to Gore was pretty ideal... a TD throw hitting Gore in stride to allow for RAC yards... something many on here refuse to give Alex any credit for being able to do. So if we are to condemn him for the one poorly placed ball... are we not gonna commend him on that next one?

We can go back and say, "well see? He's just inconsistent!"

Well I would then say. "all QBs are inconsistent. The ones with a poor OL, lazy receivers, and predictable scheme are naturally more inconsistent."

Then some will say, "those are Alexcuses!"

To which I would then say, "no, they are legitimate reasons for inconsistency!"

... and on and on it goes.

p.s. The play I was thinking of (Baas getting backup into Smith) was the Falcons game, now that my memory fills in a little.

I agree with your assessment and comments, which is why I would like to see what Harbaugh can do with Smith. Most of the pieces are in place for a turn around and a good, offensive minded coach is now in place. More importantly, the coach is a QB who can teach the position. Looking forward to a more competitive year.
I just reviewed the list of recent threads on "Niner Talk" and noticed with amusement that every thread with Alex Smith's name in the title has been locked. The last I looked he was on the roster, and the signs are that he may be retained next year.

I humbly and with hat in hand ask the mods to explain their reasoning because I am confused as to the standards and criteria that they uniformly and objectively enforceregarding their lock decisions, particularly as it pertains to the Alex threads.

I respectfully thank you mods in advance of your enlightened explanation.

I'm w/ ya oldman. I think it's safe to assume years from now Ivy League colleges will be using the Alex Smith era in SF for their debate forums. In fact, i'd love to see something like that unfold. Totally unbiased intellects just going at it.

...and now Harvard will respond to Yale's argument "Smith sucks." Three minutes gentlemen.

One of those negative Saints plays from Baas being pushed back into Smith as he released the ball. That, I thought was the tipped INT off of Gore to the DB... can anyone confirm?

Now I get that people have issues with excuses... but still, is it really fair to blame a QB for a slightly off pass due to an OL getting shoved into him just before releasing the ball?

i think its both gores and smiths fault smith overthrew him a little but gore kinda slowed down

The play 80sbaby posted above shows one play where Smith had lots of room in front of him but was about to be hit from his right side. He got the ball off just before he was pushed, so he might have had to throw before Gore was ready.

Oldman9er--don't know if there was another play that is what you remember, but I don't have a good enough memory to recall plays from yesterday let alone the early season.

I no longer have the recording, but I'm pretty sure that it was the short throw to the left to Gore... where he reached out his right hand, tipped it a bit and the DB made a great INT at the sideline. On that play, pretty sure that Baas was pushed into AS as he was just releasing. Suppose people can argue that he should have thrown it earlier.. or that Baas didn't actually affect the ball placement. But I was very sure after watching repeatedly that it was the issue.... but I can't go back and confirm that now.

But you can click on the link and go to the 25 sec mark like the thread says.

You'll see that this particular play in question is 100% on Alex.

No it is not. It is not his fault Gore is only 5'9" with short arms. 7'6" Manute Bol ( if he was still alive) could have easily caught that in stride.

Manute died last June. May he rest in peace.
Well..I see this thread has completely de-railed into an Alex Smith love/hate/defend/crucify cluster fvck.

Well, what would you suggest, LambdaChi?

lol
It's pretty sad how some will make an excuse for every Alex failure.

The OL sucks
Moran cut off his route
The tipped ball was on the receiver
The last pass of the game was a hail mary
He was getting booed

Like, I've never heard this many excuses made for any other player in the history of the NFL. None. Cuz at the end of the day, the stats do not include an "excuse" factor.....or a "not my fault" stat. If you looked at 2 potential hires...one had a 2.5 GPA and the other had a 3.8 GPA. Who are you going to hire? The guy with the 3.8? Or the guy with the 2.5 and a boatload of excuses? Excuses are for losers, period.

My question to the Alex fans. Why aren't you consistent with your excuses? Why are Alex's stats cherry picked? Why is everything someone elses fault.....but other QB's just "suck". Why do you solely look at stats when it comes to other QBs? Why do you only evaluate other QB's based on their stats? Why don't you break down their stats? Perhaps if you did, you'd be able to use the same excuses as you have for Alex.

It's annoying.

Alex stan: "Alex is better than McNabb, his stats are better"
Voice of reason: "McNabb had an off year, Alex has had 6 off years"
Alex stan: "McNabb sucks"
Voice of reason: "OK, Ben Rothlesburger is a far superior QB to Alex"
Alex stan: "But Ben has weapons and great coaching"
Voice of reason: "OK, but if you look at his stats, he is the better QB"
Alex stan: "It's not all about stats, Alex has had tipped balls, bad route running, awful playcalling, etc...so add 15 points to his QB rating which would put him ahead of Big Ben. Then when you consider Alex's super play in week 17 then Alex was a Pro-Bowl caliber QB...Of course you'd have to excuse the games against KC, Atlanta, Seattle and San Diego....the team simply wasn't good. No other QB would be able to put up better numbers.
Voice of reason:

I hope Alex starts next year. It'll finally be the end of all the excuses.
