THis!!

I think it has to be a combination of talent evaluation and coaching. Our average draft position of offensive lineman is higher during the sucking years 2003 to present than it was during the run of 10 win seasons 1983-1998. Obviously we had coach McKittrick, but someone was bringing him the talent. When an 11th round draft pick like Jesse Sapulo turns into a Pro Bowler, who deserves the credit?
A lot of playets come right in and are good and contribute. Pouncey did a hell of a job as did cle and mia left tackles. They were great and didnt need much time at all to GEL or work together.

Other veterans that came in with other teams didnt gel or work for years with the same ol. They came in and kicked booty right away.....no excuses. Because they are good players that do not lose matchups often. The niners ol does. Bottom line. Many other new players whether they are rookies or fa's come in to a new system and perform well. Our guys have not bc they are not good. Iupati is the only one. Heitmann was abobe avg but baas was as well. Besides that we better bench rachal and hope davis gets better so we can switch him and staley...then we may finally have a good ol like 20 other teams in the league.

And then we can stop making the excuses about playing together new system young and inexperienced bc MANY OTHER players overcome this. Put a good qb in a new system and team and he will perform well maybe not as good or great but very well. You know why bc the PLAYER is just good....not much to do with the coaches at that point. Think about it. Many other qbs on our team last year would of picked up 2 to 3 more games carolina rams sea phi no atl to name a few. Its sad really bc i was the one making system new players bad ol excuses for alex but many other qbs would not of made those bad throws and he did.......why???? Bc he is just not a good player an average one. Much like our ol besides iupati.
We missed on a lot of guys. Hopefully it will be better under the new regime.

I think you'll see improved results with a new coaching staff. Part of the problem was our HC influence on the offensive gameplan, as well as sub-par OC choices in the last few years.
Evaluation is a complex process starting with examining the organization, talent evaluation, coaches, and dedication to good offensive and defensive systems that are flexible enough to adjust, when necessary, to changing times.

A rookie will have a very different experience coming onto a mature team, learning how to play beside veterans, under a competent coach; as opposed to rookies coming onto the 9ers over the past five...eight...how long ago did they fire Mooch?

Bulaga and Pouncey came into situations that had more experienced veterans around them than did Davis. Baas is the old man on the 9ers line (6 Yrs) and may have found his niche with the team after looking somewhat mediocre at OG. But he was still new to calling line adjustments which is key against modern D's that move and stunt/blitz. If Heitmann had not gone down the line might have come together much more quickly. Lupati is given credit for having been much better than Davis but he is a G and it's much more difficult to judge how much help he received from Staley and Baas than the RT who is very visible--on an island. Every mistake he made was glaringly apparent.

The super bowl showed, more than any game I can recall, how important it is to have a smart, adaptable coach and organization. Both teams lost key players but their play actually improved through the year. Then they lost more key players during the game and were able to put in replacements and scheme around them to prevent a total meltdown. Just a fun game to watch from that stand point. Still can't believe GB lost two DBs and still managed just fine. Perhaps that's the secret...we should have benched our starting DBs. That is (an attempt at) humor so please, no yelling.

Edit: It's important for the 9ers to bring in a couple of FAs who are from good organizations. They don't have to be the stars but just solid guys who know how to be professionals. I thought that was imporant to Nolan but looking at the roster I'm not sure.

Yeah, I'd agree, it's more about the coaching than anything. Iupati will be a Pro Bowl OG...AD will take a bit longer, in part because he came out after his junior season. He also switched positions from LT to RT...some guys, even longtime vets like Sims just don't perform as well there as they do at LT. So, I'd give Davis another season to get his stuff together. Baas has turned out well...that is, once they put him at C. Staley's solid, but has had injury problems the last two seasons. Rachal may be the bust among them...but, maybe with Solari and Denvro, even he'll straighten out. It wouldn't surprise me if they either replace him w/Snyder or go out and draft another OG, though.
