Why not use the transition tage on Lawson or Franklin?

I believe teams have two transition tags in uncapped years.

Read the "Three tags instead of one" paragraph

Nice find. But that would have only applied to last year free agents since that was the no cap year. Without a new CBA it's unclear how that tag will be imposed going forward. There are so many things that are unclear right now. The union and league really need to get this in high gear starting Monday.

Unless they get the new CBA done before FA (fingers crossed), I would think the tag rules would be the same as last year because 2011 is an uncapped year until that happens. But who knows?

I agree - what really needs to happen is for them to get their sh*t together on Monday and get another deal done.

I think the webzoners above cannot read. I said Transition tag, which is a lower number because it is the average of the top 10 or 20% more than last year.

This is a cheaper option than the franchise tag, and at least gives the niners a shot of keeping one player for another year.

All I did was point out we may have two transition tags this year. I didn't say anything about the franchise tag or how expensive it would be.

I don't think I'm the one with a reading problem here.
no franchise tag. have them sign with 2 to 3 years contract. too expesive plus these guys have not live up to there game. franklin somewhat but he didnt have lot of tackles for loss
They should sign Franklin to a long term deal. They should not sign or tender Lawson, an overrated player that has never played up to his potential or draft position.

This is my frustration with the Niners and webzoners. The niners need to build, not rebuild. Like it or not, Franklin and Lawson where starters and better than other NT's and OLB's on the roster. If retained then they niners could draft QB, CB, another rushing OLB, etc.

You do not improve by letting players walk and drafting like players. Ie Julian Peterson walking then drafting Lawson, zero imporvement in the team and another draft pick that could have been used on a different position.

Letting Lawson/Franklin walk on their own is not "re-building." It's replacing an OLB who needs to be replaced anyway in our new Fangio scheme and Franklin's are easier to replace as he's a small one-gap NT who was just paid the Franchise Tag. Both are generally much easier to replace and draft and/or pick up in FA esp. given every defensive player will be learning a new defense in 2011 anyhow. Did I also mention how much you could pool in FA if you let these two guys walk? Done deal IMHO! Overrated replaceable players that you may get more production from in 2011 from players that actually fit the 3-4 better. And at the end of the day, they probably want to leave anyhow to a better team that fits their skill; both would be tremendous in a 4-3.
