Manny Lawson would make more money than Patrick Willis if we were to franchise tag him

Pssh..Patrick Willis is a bum! What has he done recently? Manny Lawson DESERVES more money than that HACKtrick Willis. Manny is the leader on defense, he is our best defensive player and he never misses a tackle.
#52 Manny Lawson is a future HOFer.

b/c you can't do it. Teams are only allowed one transition tag a year. the team can't even franchise both of them. it's one or the other.

Because that would be over paying for average players.

The value of the franchise tag this year is 15 million. We do not have a single free agent on our roster that is worth 15 million for one year of service.

If we wanted the front office to be the laughing stock of the league ahead, why not.. let's franchise one of them. Our front office has started to climb to respectability through getting key players locked down for market value or less (Staley, VD, Willis) and not giving into player demands. Any potential franchise player we have would be overpaid under it, nuff said.
Lawson is gonna want money similar to Dansby last year, and is probably being told by his agent that his best bet to land a bigger future payday is as a 4-3 OLB, my guess is that he goes to Denver who are desperate for solid LB's, excluding our own bay area's DJ Williams, and just hired John Fox who is bringing in the 4-3.
Franklin isn't worth $10-12m based off age and function. He's a run stuffer, but not a Wilfork who is gonna consistently pressure the QB too. Hopefully he will accept a longer contract at less money, but you can't pay him more than Willis when he can't play every down.
Save the franchise tag, and extend Baas for the long term, Spikes 1-2 years(if he wants back), and make a run at extending Goldson (if he isn't looking for Rolle-money) and Franklin. My biggest concern is Baas, we need him back, especially if we are gonna be another power run team. Have Heitmann and Chilo battle it out for the other spot and we should have a decent line for awhile. Upgrading pieces and depth year in and year out.

Franklin wouldn't get the average of the top 5 players.
He was franchised LAST year, so he has to recieve 20% more than he did last year which would likely make him the highest paid DT in the league (for 1 year anyway).

I believe teams have two transition tags in uncapped years.

I love it, we are talking about guys that have contributed to a 7-9 record! These guys are not as important to the future of this team as you are letting on!
We would develope a NT if Franklin walks, and we would develope another OLB if Lawson walks, hell we may even do better without them!

The franchise tag "value" is different based on what positions you're franchise tagging. For DT's it might be around $12m and around $10m for LB's.

Some team would use a "poison pill" stipulation and sign them away from us. Unlike the franchise tag there will be no compensation to us.
You can almost guarantee Franklin will be gone if transition tagged. Lawson might just stick around.

Nice find. But that would have only applied to last year free agents since that was the no cap year. Without a new CBA it's unclear how that tag will be imposed going forward. There are so many things that are unclear right now. The union and league really need to get this in high gear starting Monday.
