Should Hoerner stay ?

Seeing that we may hire a ST coach in Seely (which would be awesome by the way), the only spot left is TE coach. Chryst was a TE coach, but can and will coach QB's.. I ask the question, " Do you think Hoerner should stay ?", he seems to have done a good job with our 3 TE's, and I wonder if he's warranted a stay. What do you guys think ?

He was one of the few coaches I wanted to stay along with Rathman, Tomsula and possibly Solari. I think he's done a great job but we might be looking at a younger youth movement. We have some guys who are in their 50's but a lot of guys who are in their 30's-40's. I couldn't find it but Hoener has been coaching for 34 years so I would guess he is nearing 60.

I am a Badgers fan and Paul Chryst has done a nice job as OC. A bit conservative at times but we aren't hiring him as OC.... we would probably hire him as TE's coach. He has been OC/QB coach since 05 but has a lot of experience with TE's before then. So not sure how much he has worked with the TE's since 06 but we have put out Owen Daniels, Travis Beckum, Garrett Graham and Lance Kendricks since around 05 when he was the TE coach/OC. All of those guys where really productive in college but Daniels so far is the only productive one in the NFL. It's hard to tell how he would do with NFL talent but he did coach the Chargers TE's from 99-01. Honestly, I am surprised he isn't a HC for a college by now. I think teams are knocking on his door. We will see....

I was rooting for Hoener, Rathman, Solari, R.Brown, Tomsula, Tarver to stay on.

Looks like only Rathman, Solari, Tomsula will stay.

Hoener did a great job molding VD, improving his pass catching, route running, and blocking. Also did a nice job converting Walker from a college WR. He should stay IMO but who I am I'm not an ex-15 year QB nor the hottest coaching prospect in a long time.

In Harbaugh I trust!
Yep, kinda sad to see him go too. Just thought he'd be sort of good for continuity sake too..
why was Tarver not retained? hes been on the staff since 2001!

any coach that can survive through 4 HC hires and keep getting retained should be given credit.

think about that...He was retained after Mooch got fired, after Erickson got fired, after Nolan got fired, and now should be retained in some form after Singletary got fired.

he was around for the 12-4 season...

Sure but we haven't had a dominate pass rushing OLB since we went to the 3-4 in 05. Jerry Sullivan coached with us for 6 years, doesn't mean he did a good job. I think Tarver has done a decent job but maybe we want someone who is better in the pass rush department? Look at what Kevin Greene did for the Packers.

weve always had a very good LB corps, and Tarver has been here through all of it. a dominant pass rushing LB is hard to find, its not his fault we dont have one. his job is to coach the LB on how to play their positions. he cant control the defensive schemes and playcalls of when and where the LB will blitz.

and despite what most people think, Manny Lawson has actually been an above average pass rushing OLB. this year he led the NFL in highest % of creating a hurry, hit, or sack when he was assigned to rush the passer. he wasnt asked to rush the passer as often as alot of others, but when he did, he made a play almost every time.
Hoerner lol

I agree with your last sentence but disagree of the development of Vernon Davis.

The most important job of a TE in the passing game is to be the first option in blitz situations and in short yardage. Davis has not yet developed any reliable ability in those two areas. He is also not yet reliable in other routes like arrows and the like.

Davis has improved his blocking and Hoener should get some credit for that but the rest of his game is more a reliance on his athletics gifts than anything else.

I see no compelling reason to retain him.
