Balke Interview on KNBR Today | Page 4

Balke was on KNBR a while ago and talked about the role of the OLB and to paraphrase, we'll remain a 3-4 defense AND the #1 responsibility of the OLB will be to pass rush en route to his #2 responsibility of playing the run. Ladies and gentlemen, BALKE GETS IT! Manusky is polar opposite in his vision of the OLB to #1, defend the run, #2 drop back in coverage and $3 rush the passer with specialists on 3rd downs; totally azz-backwards and it's why Manusky is gone. BTW: That was one of the best GM interviews I've ever heard. Balke really seems to have a serious pulse on this organization and to each players strengths/weaknesses and takes into account the bigger picture. He covered the OLB positon (even across the NFL/college), Anthony Davis (and the entire o-line, player by player), Josh Morgan, the QB position (big time), etc. He even covered "motivation" of players and how this affects play as well as age. He had specific examples of good play against top competition. It was a very very good interview and I highly recommend listening to it if you get a chance. Kudos to Fitz and Brooks on this one for shutting up and asking relevant questions. It was very encouraging...

My pleasure bro! I like how he talked about how a good corner helps the pass rushers and likewise and how the offense helps the defense and likewise! I esp. liked how he downgraded the importance of OLB's dropping back in coverage and what the #1 and #2 priority (pass rush and setting the edge) is which says something b/c our OLB's played a TON in coverage last year, even our "third down specialists." Craziness!

Count on SD to minimize ANY success York and Baalke had. Jed's third year as official CEO hires GM, Trent Baalke and lands Harbaugh. Paarag has proven his skills with contracts and that's where he stays. There will be another FO pro coming.

Bottom line, it won't matter a hill of beans until SD says sorry when we land our next 6th.

He's no idiot for sure. He's truly loves this team. I can feel it in the way he talks about the team. He hates John and Denise York with Jed as an extension because of their failed tenure as owners for the last eight years since firing Mooch. Nothing atones for those sins in SD's eyes and I can respect it. I may not agree, but I can respect that passion about your team. It's a different POV.

That's why I give him a ration of crap anytime he goes the "hate York" route. I have faith in Jed, really do. He made the right choice as a CEO with Baalke as Baalke was able to land Harbaugh.

In time, this season will go down in 49er lore. SD, will have no choice, but to accept it.

Ain't that right SanDiego?

It sounds like Baalke thinks all the pieces are there on offense except qb. A good possibility we go defense in the draft. I think we should go RB with Gore coming back from injury not sure he may be the same. Try to trade out of the #7 pick to get a couple more later picks.

Yeah, he sounds like he really gets it.

Baalke played outside linebacker in college.

I had to look it up because he really sounds like he's played the game. He's got a really good understanding of the mentality of the players. Corners need to be confident, receivers need to be excited....

Guy is obviously a student of the game. He sounds really confident, too. That makes me feel confident.

I think Jed might just have done did his Uncle proud.

When does next season start?
